Civil society seeks probe into arms recovery

Kolkata, June 6

Expressing concern over the recovery of illegal arms in West Bengal, a section of the civil society Monday urged the state government to conduct an independent probe.

?Huge amounts of illegal arms are being recovered from across the state. We had tried to draw the attention of the previous government but unfortunately they never paid heed. Today our apprehension has come true.

?Besides the recovery of arms, the discovery of human skeletons is a dangerous sign. We the members of civil society cannot keep quiet. We urge the government to initiate an immediate and independent investigation into the matter,? said renowned painter and activist Suvaprasanna.

The civil society members, including poet Joy Goswami and rights activist Sujato Bhadra, had actively backed Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee?s campaign against the earlier Left Front government.

They also proposed setting up a task force to probe the matter and demanded that the guilty be punished.
