Phony voting instructions, other nasty last-minute campaign tactics showing up in tight race

MIAMI - With a week to go until Election Day, the nasty campaign tactics are coming out.

People in Florida, Virginia and Indiana have gotten calls falsely telling them they can vote early by phone and don't need to go to a polling place. In suburban Broward County, Florida, a handful of elderly voters who requested absentee ballots say they were visited by unknown people claiming to be authorized to collect the ballots.

And there's a mysterious DVD popping up in mailboxes that purports to be a documentary raising questions about the true identity of President Barack Obama's father.

It's one more indication of just how close the race between Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney is. Polls show a statistical dead heat in several key battleground states such as Florida and Virginia that are likely to determine the outcome of the election, creating an added incentive to try to tip the scales.

Voting rights advocates say reports of political deception and underhandedness are on the rise.

"Unfortunately it seems like the shadowy individuals that want to prevent people from voting are doing things earlier," said Eric Marshall, legal mobilization manager at the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. The organization is part of a coalition called Election Protection that is monitoring voting access and rights nationwide, including a toll-free hotline set up to take complaints.

"Each American's vote matters. It's important to them and it's important to the community," Marshall said.

Indiana's secretary of state launched an investigation of the phoney voting instructions being phoned to homes in that state, and Virginia officials issued a warning to voters there asking them to report any such calls.

In the Broward County, Florida, case, elderly voters "were told, 'I'm an official and I'm here to pick up your absentee ballot,'" said Alma Gonzalez, a senior Florida Democratic Party official working on voter protection efforts. "There is no official who picks up your ballot."

In addition to those cases, garish billboards warning that voter fraud is a crime punishable by jail time and fines were put up in minority neighbourhoods in Ohio and Wisconsin. They were recently taken down amid complaints they were aimed at intimidating African-American and Latino voters. The people behind the billboards have not come forward.

"It's hard to believe that these were just public service announcements," Marshall said. "Those neighbourhoods were specifically targeted."

"It doesn't pass the smell test."

Independent Florida voter Jane Bowman smelled something bad, too, when she recently discovered a DVD in her mailbox questioning the identity of Obama's father.

"I think it's just a dirty trick. It just astonished me," said Bowman, a Jacksonville resident who says she plans to vote for Obama as she did four years ago. "I think they're doing everything they can to win Florida. It's a sorry situation."

The DVD's director, who says he has mailed some 7 million copies to homes in swing states, says that he is unaffiliated with political campaigns or their supporters and that the film reflects his own painstaking research into Obama's family background.

The DVD, "Dreams from My Real Father," posits that the president's true father was a communist agitator, author and poet living in Hawaii named Frank Marshall Davis ? not the Kenyan man who shares the president's name. Both men are now dead.

The title is a reference to Obama's book about his family history. That book does mention a poet named "Frank" who was a friend of Obama's maternal grandfather.

In an interview, DVD director Joel Gilbert described himself as a nonpartisan independent who seeks only to tell what he views as an extremely important story. Gilbert said he did not co-ordinate distribution of the DVD with any political entity and also took no political contributions to finance it. Yet the DVD was targeted at voters in key battleground states, including 1.5 million in Florida and 1.2 million in Ohio, according to Gilbert's website.

"It's a publicity measure," he said of the free mail distribution. "This has been an effort to force and embarrass the media into covering the content of the film."

Gilbert declined to disclose how the DVD and its distribution were financed, saying his production company is private and not required to. He has also made what he calls "mockumentaries" exploring whether former Beatle Paul McCartney might really be dead ? as was rumoured in the 1960s ? and finding Elvis Presley alive and living as a federal agent in Southern California. He has also done films on Islamic-Jewish relations and Iran's strategic ambitions.

Obama campaign spokesman Adam Fetcher declined comment on the DVD.

Another mysterious batch of mailings to voters in at least 23 Florida counties is being investigated by the FBI and state officials. These anonymous letters, which were postmarked from Seattle, raise questions about the voter's citizenship and provide a form that supposedly must immediately be filled out and returned to elections officials. Otherwise, the letter says, the voter's name will be purged from the rolls.

"A nonregistered voter who casts a vote in the State of Florida may be subject to arrest, imprisonment, and/or other criminal sanctions," warns one of the official-looking letters complete with eagle-and-flag logo, which appear to have been aimed mainly at registered Republicans.

Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner has asked all of the state's supervisors of elections to report any similar letters. There could also be federal charges against those responsible.

Voting rights advocates also say there have been scattered complaints of bosses ordering employees to support a particular presidential candidate or face job repercussions. And in the past, students and other groups have been the targets of robocalls falsely saying they can vote on the day after Election Day if the lines are too long.

Marshall said such misinformation tactics surface election after election because it's not illegal in most states to deceive someone about the timing or place of an election, or to lie about a candidate's political affiliation. Most laws, he said, are more geared toward preventing voter intimidation and ensuring physical access to polling places. Those who do get caught in deception usually claim it was all a big misunderstanding.

"It's very difficult to stop," he said. "The tactics have evolved but the law hasn't."

Stock futures lower on storm, earnings: cash markets closed

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stock index futures fell on Monday with investors continuing to fret about the weak revenue picture developing for corporate America, and as U.S. cash equity markets will be closed due to a huge hurricane expected to hit the U.S. East Coast the later in the day.

* All U.S. stock markets will be closed on Monday and possibly Tuesday, the operator of the New York Stock Exchange said late on Sunday, reversing an earlier plan that would have kept electronic trading going on Monday.

* Hurricane Sandy, a mammoth storm menacing the East Coast, took aim at the most densely populated U.S. region on Monday, forcing hundreds of thousands to seek higher ground, halting public transport and closing schools, businesses and government departments.

* Lighter revenues have been a concern this earnings season. Just 36.9 percent of S&P 500 companies so far have reported revenue that beat forecasts, compared with the 62 percent that typically exceed expectations, according to Thomson Reuters data as of Friday.

* S&P 500 futures fell 8.6 points and were below fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures fell 75 points and Nasdaq 100 futures fell 19.50 points.

* Stocks slid last week, following a series of weak results, especially from U.S. multinational companies. For the week, the Dow fell 1.8 percent, the S&P 500 lost 1.5 percent and the Nasdaq dropped 0.6 percent.

* The S&P 500 index is off nearly 4 percent since a peak in September and the index has fallen below its 50-day moving average, a closely watched momentum indicator. Some analysts are now looking to the 100-day moving average as the next area of support at 1,396.8. The index closed at 1,411.94 on Friday.

* The U.S. government plans to issue data on personal income and spending for September on Monday even though the government has shut down to brace for Hurricane Sandy. The Federal Reserve, however, will postpone its regularly scheduled data.

* The Commerce Department will post the monthly report on consumer spending on its web site at 8:30 a.m. (1230 GMT), as regularly scheduled.

* European shares fell for the first time in four sessions on Monday, hit by worries over weak company results. The FTSEurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> fell 0.5 percent to 1,091.36 points and the euro zone's blue-chip Euro STOXX 50 index <.stoxx50e> fell 0.8 percent to 2,476.04 points.

US, Europe see hope in future Iran nuclear talks, but will press on with sanctions

The U.S. and the European Union said Tuesday they'll press on with sanctions against Iran, even as they hope the promise of new negotiations could lead to a diplomatic solution ending the nuclear standoff.

Appearing together at a news conference in the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo before continuing a joint tour of the Balkans in Serbia and Kosovo, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said both diplomacy and pressure would continue until Iran makes significant concessions over its disputed uranium enrichment activity.

"We continue to try and find ways to move forward on our negotiations," Ashton told reporters in Sarajevo. She cited contact over the weekend between a top aide and an assistant to Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili, and said she would be reaching out to Jalili "in the near future."

Still, there appeared to be no significant advance in the process since world powers instructed Ashton last month in New York to speak with Jalili and gauge Iran's seriousness on coming into compliance with its international nuclear negotiations. The West fears Iran may be trying to develop nuclear weapons, a charge Tehran denies.

The West has demanded that Iran must stop enriching uranium to 20 per cent purity, shut down its underground Fordo enrichment site and ship its 20 per cent stockpile out of the country. In return, Iran has been offered civilian plane spare parts and 20 per cent-enriched nuclear fuel for its medical research reactor in Tehran.

Clinton said the U.S. message to Iran is clear. "The window remains open to resolve the international community's concerns about your nuclear program diplomatically and to relieve your isolation, but that window cannot remain open indefinitely. Therefore, we hope that there can be serious good-faith negotiations commenced soon."

Iran has sent mixed signals on its nuclear program. World powers cited increased flexibility from Iran in September when they agreed to lay the groundwork for a new round of negotiations, and on Tuesday Iran's Foreign Ministry said the standoff could be resolved if the U.S. and its partners recognize Iran's right to produce nuclear fuel.

But senior Iranian officials also have threatened to boost enrichment levels if the West doesn't ease sanctions. And the U.S. and its partners say measures that are crippling the Iranian economy will remain in force until Tehran first starts coming into compliance with its international obligations.

Clinton and Ashton spoke during the first leg of their tour of the Balkans, where they are urging rivals ethnic groups and governments to settle their differences for the good of their nations.

Seventeen years after the U.S.-led intervention ended Bosnia's civil war, Bosnia's Muslims, Serbs and Croats are split on how to unify the country or even to dissolve their federation entirely into separate ethnic parts. The Serb republic and the Bosniak-Croat federation have their own governments and parliaments, held together only weakly by a three-member presidency that Clinton and Ashton met with.

Clinton called efforts by some to roll back the Dayton Accords passed during the presidency of her husband "totally unacceptable," a reference to Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik's call for the dissolution of Bosnia. He has also denied the genocide of Bosnia's Muslims in the 1990s.

Clinton urged all Bosnia's leaders to "put aside their political differences, put aside the rhetoric of dissolution, secession and denial of what tragically happened in the war." She and Ashton said the country's slow pace of reforms and the inability of leaders to look past their ethnic constituencies are holding back its hopes of joining the EU and NATO, and leaving it behind neighbours such as Serbia, Croatia and Kosovo.

Later in Belgrade, the two met Serbia's nationalist president, Tomislav Nikolic, and Prime Minister Ivica Dacic.

Clinton told them that normalizing ties with Kosovo, which broke off from Serbia four years ago, is critical for Serbian aspirations of entering the 27-nation European Union. She urged progress in talks with Kosovo about issues such as freedom of movement, customs, utilities and government services, without calling for Belgrade to immediately recognize the independence of its former province.

After Serbia, the pair flew together on Clinton's plane to Kosovo's capital of Pristina, where they'll press top officials on similar matters on Wednesday. Afterward, Ashton will drop off the trip and Clinton will travel on to Croatia and Albania, NATO's two newest members.

Bunkycooks ? The Umstead Hotel and Spa in Cary, NC and Herons ...

Just minutes from the noise and bustle of everyday life in the Research Triangle, there is a tranquil oasis situated on twelve acres in Cary, North Carolina, The Umstead Hotel and Spa.? What was described to me as ?The Umstead Experience? became evident the minute we walked into the lobby.

This luxury property, recently named one of the Top Hotels in the South by Cond? Naste Traveler, was also ranked #11 for Best Large City Hotels by Travel & Leisure in 2012.? Herons, the signature restaurant at The Umstead, has received numerous accolades and awards including Five Stars from Forbes Travel Guide and Five Diamonds from AAA.? It has also received recognition from Food & Wine and Southern Living.

We traveled to The Umstead to meet with Executive Chef Scott Crawford who has also been the executive chef at some of the finest properties in the Southeast including The Woodlands Resort & Inn in Summerville, South Carolina and The Cloister at Sea Island, Georgia.? He is committed to using the absolute finest ingredients and supporting local artisans and farms.

Herons Dining Room

Herons has received two very prestigious awards from AAA and Forbes

The striking blend of art, nature, and refinement is evident as you enter the hotel?s lobby.? Subtle earth tones and soft lighting combined with views of the surrounding lake, wooded property, and gardens have an immediate calming effect.? It is obvious that every effort has been made to ensure the ultimate in relaxation and the perfect stay for the guests, down to the impeccable service offered by the staff.

An impressive art collection is displayed throughout the hotel

The lake and wooded area in back of the property are perfect for a stroll or run in the morning

The rooms have a spa-like feeling with a neutral palette and views of the gardens and wooded areas

Since it was Mr. B?s birthday weekend, we decided to take Beamer, our Tibetan Terrier, along for the celebration.? The Umstead Hotel is pet friendly.? Beamer settled right in with the dog bed and bowls provided in the room.? Our room was located on the ground level with easy access to the gardens outside.? We took afternoon walks around the lake.? We enjoyed the beauty of nature and Beamer enjoyed the many plants, shrubs, and flowers that he closely inspected along the way.

The walk along the lake includes some great photo opportunities as well as time to relax

Throughout our stay, there was a true sense of relaxation.? A calm settled in.? Each venue is designed to soothe the senses.? The first afternoon we enjoyed a glass of wine on the upstairs patio outside the lounge and bar.? As the afternoon sun began to set, the summer temperatures moderated and we were comfortable outdoors, with a bit of a breeze coming in from the lake.? We took the time to enjoy the view from above where you could see all the grounds and the pool area.? As I was thinking ahead to fall, the large stone fireplace on the patio looked like an ideal place to gather and enjoy a cocktail in the cooler months.

Enjoying a glass of wine at the outside lounge and bar area

Our first evening?s dining experience was at Herons.? Highly recommended by a good friend in Charleston, Chef Crawford and his culinary team did not disappoint.? The dishes were refined, elegant, and artistically plated.? Chilled corn soup, at the height of the summer?s season, was elevated to a luscious, buttery consistency combined with pieces of lobster knuckle meat, potato croutons, and popcorn shoots.?? The Seared Tuna with Tempura Rock Shrimp with Coconut and Red Curry was one of the finest pieces of tuna I have ever had, affirming the chef?s commitment to sourcing the best ingredients available.

Entrance to Herons

One of the tables set for dinner

Beautiful orchids were part of the table settings

The perfect blend of technique and creativity was evident in every dish.? Paired with beautiful wines and outstanding, yet unobtrusive service, this was a truly memorable evening.? In the Southeast, there are few fine dining experiences that match the elegance of the food and service offered at Herons.

The wine list was excellent, including those wines offered by the glass

Every course was perfectly executed and the service impeccable

Wherever we travel, we like to explore the area and experience more of the culinary scene.? The following morning we ventured out to downtown Raleigh for brunch.? Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina and has been recognized for its efforts in historical preservation.

In some respects, the downtown area was a throwback to the 1960?s with sections of the city preserved in the quaint period of low-rise, brick buildings with wide sidewalks and signage from bygone days.? There is a revitalization in the city taking place, however, new local restaurants and unique shops intentionally preserve the older feel of the city.

After brunch we returned to the comfort of The Umstead.? Not wanting to miss a moment of our stay, we spent the afternoon wandering the grounds and sitting outdoors with Beamer.

We love when Beamer is able to travel with us

Spending so much time on the road and catching up when we are at home, I have learned to appreciate quiet times when you don?t feel it necessary to do anything other than to take in the moment.? That is what I experienced during our weekend at The Umstead.? While we did not have the opportunity to enjoy the spa at the property, I felt as though the entire property was a spa.? The ambiance and mood they have created invites you to savor your surroundings and relax.

The Bar and Lounge at The Umstead serves lighter fare for dinner

We decided to not leave the hotel that evening and ordered a few small plates in their elegant bar and lounge area.? Craving something light after a hefty brunch, a cocktail and a salad fit the bill.? Once again, the food did not disappoint with beautiful grilled vegetables and fresh lettuces in the salad topped with a sheep?s milk cheese; turning something simple into a special dish.

Cocktails and small bites for dinner

Farm Lettuces with Grilled Vegetables, Sheep?s Cheese, and Garlic Dressing

I was sorry to leave the next day as this was one of the most enjoyable and relaxing weekends we have experienced.? The Umstead is a stunning property with outstanding food and impeccable service.? From the moment you arrive until the moment you leave, everything else seems less important.? Ideal for a vacation close to home, a destination wedding, or a weekend away to relax and reconnect, The Umstead experience is one I can highly recommend.

I will have an interview with The Umstead Hotel?s Executive Chef Scott Crawford later this week along with one of his delightful recipes for fall.

* Disclosure ? The Umstead Hotel and Spa provided a media package for our visit.? I was not asked to write any articles about my stay and have in no way been compensated.? The opinions expressed regarding our experience are my own.

Students learn to love their bodies | Daily Sundial

Thursday saw the closing of Love Your Body Week at CSUN, a four-day event promoting self acceptance and debunking unattainable body standards enforced by today?s media and society.

Beginning Oct. 22, Love Your Body Week, or LBYW, launched with the University Counseling Services peer groups tabling on Matador Walkway. Joint Advocates on Disordered Eating (J.A.D.E.), Blues Project and Project D.A.T.E. (Discovering Alternatives for Today?s Encounters) provided visitors with pamphlets discussing disorders and issues in university students.

Peer nutrition counselors were available at the event, offering visitors the chance to find out their daily calorie intake and other nutrition resources offered by the Klotz Student Health Center, Student Recreational Center and the Living Well Lounge.

In line with the theme ?Makeup-Less Monday,? a table was set up to offer students three all-natural recipes like milk and honey face wash, sugar lip scrub and lavender sea salt scrub. Visitors were able to make their recipes at the booth, free of charge.

Those looking for a more proactive approach to fitness were greeted at special edition ?workouts at the SRC throughout the week, culminating in an intense Yoga session with instructor Margaux at the Multi-purpose Room on Thursday evening.

Melanie Klein, sociologist and CSUN professor, was the guest speaker at the Thousand Oaks Room. Titled ?How Yoga Makes You Pretty: Media, Body Image and Yoga,? Klein discussed her gradual transition from a directionless 22-year-old struggling with body issues into a self-assured individual, thanks to practicing yoga and an inspiring mentor who introduced her to the world of feminism.

?It?s very difficult to grow up in this world, this culture, without feeling inadequate especially if you?re a girl or woman,? Klein said. ?Today, women only have limited options in which they can be attractive. Meanwhile men can be considered attractive even if they don?t have mainstream features. ?

Among other topics discussed were the popular baby bump watch, eating disorders, the westerns emphasis on mind over body and physical awareness. For communication studies major Sammy Johnson, the talk was inspiring.

?It helped me change the way I should think of my body and self-worth,? Johnson said.

Love Your Body Week is the first step to introducing the Media and Public Health Act Project, an organization whose partnership with N.E.D.A. (National Eating Disorders Association) aims to pass legislation so ads featuring photoshopped images of men or women will also contain labels saying so.

Neurotransmitters linked to mating behavior are shared by mammals and worms

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? When it comes to sex, animals of all shapes and sizes tend behave in predictable ways. There may be a chemical reason for that. New research from Rockefeller University has shown that chemicals in the brain -- neuropeptides known as vasopressin and oxytocin -- play a role in coordinating mating and reproductive behavior in animals ranging from humans to fish to invertebrates.

"Our research shows that molecules similar to vasopressin and oxytocin have an ancient and evolutionarily conserved role in controlling a critical social behavior, mating," says Cori Bargmann, Torsten N. Wiesel Professor and head of the Lulu and Anthony Wang Laboratory of Neural Circuits and Behavior. "This work suggests that these molecules encode the same kind of information in the brains of very different animals."

Bargmann, whose laboratory studies the relationship between genes, neural circuits and behavior in the C. elegans roundworm, says vasopressin and oxytocin have been implicated in a variety of reproductive and social behaviors in humans and other mammals, including pair bonding, maternal bonding and aggressive and affiliative behaviors. Mice that lack oxytocin may develop social amnesia, and humans who sniff oxytocin through an inhaler change their cooperative behavior in computer games, behaving as though they "trust" other players more.

Bargmann's team, led by postdoc Jennifer Garrison, identified a peptide and two receptors in C. elegans worms that were similar to the mammalian oxytocin/vasopressin signaling system. Male worms that were engineered to lack this peptide, dubbed nematocin, were clumsy sexual partners.

"Although they could perform the motor aspects of mating, their sequences were inefficient, disorganized and repetitious," says Garrison. "Only a fraction of males lacking the peptide were able to complete mating by transferring sperm within five minutes of first contacting a partner, a time in which normal worms are usually successful."

Males lacking nemotocin or its receptors also spent less time looking for mates, as though they were less motivated to find partners.

McIlroy beats Woods in China exhibition

(AP) ? Rory McIlroy shot a 5-under 67 to beat Tiger Woods by one stroke in a head-to-head, 18-hole exhibition match between the world's two top-ranked golfers at the Jinsha Lake Golf Club in central China on Monday.

McIlroy, the World No. 1, took an early lead with two birdies on the first three holes and held on to beat Woods, who had two bogeys to go along with his six birdies for the day. The 14-time major winner finished with a 68.

Both players had to make long journeys to Zhengzhou, an industrial city in China's Henan province, after competing elsewhere on Sunday. McIlroy finished second to Peter Hanson in the European Tour's BMW Masters at Shanghai, while Woods tied for fourth in the PGA Tour's CIMB Classic in Malaysia.

The 18-hole medal-match, dubbed "Duel at Jinsha Lake," marked the first time the two golfers had played head-to-head without other competitors.

Microgravity research coming of age on the International Space Station

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2012) ? They say that necessity is the mother of invention, so when humans decided to build and inhabit a laboratory in the harsh environment of space, it was only natural that innovations would follow. The creators of these developments sought patents to protect their intellectual property, giving a way to gauge microgravity advancements. The recently published paper, "Microgravity-Related Patent History," by Mark Uhran, looks back at the more than 818 patents granted since 1981, as related to the term "microgravity."

Uhran, former NASA director, International Space Station Division Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate, points out that the use of patents as an indicator of value creation signifies economic potential. In addition to the granted patents, he cites an additional 580 applications filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office during the last decade. There are undoubtedly station-related patents, according to Uhran, that do not include the term of microgravity. This means an even greater likelihood of additional innovations beyond those counted in his paper.

"Microgravity processing research is coming of age in much the same way that vacuum processing did at the close of the 19th century," said Uhran. "From vacuum technologies, the 20th century industrial revolution in microelectronics was born, and from microgravity technologies I predict a 21st century revolution in microbiotics that will dramatically change our approach to human health care and food production."

Developments based on microgravity investigations and exploration create compelling competition between agencies, scientists and engineers. This includes both research and technology developments, as seen in both cooperative and parallel projects that may lead to benefits for humanity.

"The fields of molecular and cellular biotechnology have already demonstrated the competitive advantages of microgravity environments," said Uhran.

The top seven patent categories include the following: biotechnologies (36%), instrumentation/analytical (13%), materials (12%), aerospace components (12%), and systems in the areas of thermal, measurement, and human health (4% each).

Macromolecular crystal growth and studies on bacterial pathogens in microgravity both show the potential from research aboard the space station to yield simultaneous beneficial developments for human health and global economies. "From the independent work of DeLucas, McPherson and Urade, we know that space is an effective tool for solving the structure of important biological macromolecules," said Uhran. "Nickerson and Hammond have both made competitive progress toward producing vaccines and therapeutics for bacterial pathogens."

While initially the U.S. government dominated microgravity-related patents, the area of industrial submissions quickly gained ground, with a continued growth that surpassed government, individual investigators and academia. These various sectors, Uhran asserts, are codependent. "The government role is to bridge the two [industry and academia] and demonstrate promise by underwriting long lead-time basic research, and proofs-of-concept for applications."

The grouping of the patent categories reveals the relationships inherent in knowledge growth and technological development. "In some cases, it's a scientific finding that enables the innovation of a new process or product on the ground that was never previously achievable," said Uhran. "In other cases, the process or product must function in the microgravity environment in order to yield an outcome that's not possible to duplicate on the ground under any conditions. Finally, a share of these patents are for products or processes that are needed to live and work in a microgravity environment."

Uhran concludes in his paper that his findings are merely the "tip of the proverbial iceberg." With the space station now at full utilization, he expects patents to grow rapidly, an indicator of advancing benefits on Earth and for future space exploration.

"Nothing could be more rewarding than to complete the International Space Station and meet all of the mission performance requirements we set back at the 1993 Critical Design Review," said Uhran. "We now have the laboratories we need, so what remains is a matter of political will and classic research portfolio management practices to capitalize on this incredible national asset."

UPDATE 2-Baseball-Giants silence Tigers to lead World Series 3-0

* Giants seek second title in three years

* Cabrera, Fielder struggle at the plate

* Vogelsong shines again (Adds more detail, quotes)

DETROIT, Oct 27 (Reuters) - The San Francisco Giants rode another virtuoso pitching performance to blank the Detroit Tigers 2-0 on Saturday and move within one victory of their second World Series title in three years.

San Francisco have a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series and can claim the championship with a victory at Detroit's Comerica Park on Sunday.

"It's a good situation, but there's nothing been done yet," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "It's a number, just like I said about two. Now it's three. But that's not the series.

"So you have to keep going about your business as usual."

Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong allowed the Tigers just five singles over 5 2/3 innings before giving way to relievers Tim Lincecum and Sergio Romo, who did not surrender a hit.

The Giants scored both of their runs in the second inning on an RBI triple by Gregor Blanco and a run-scoring single by Brandon Crawford.

Those early runs drained the enthusiasm from a sellout crowd of 42,262 desperate to see the Tigers make a move in their bid to capture their first championship since 1984.

Defeat left Detroit, shut out in the last two games, on the ropes and manager Jim Leyland said there would be no pre-game motivational speeches for his team on Sunday.

"They can count," said Leyland. "We know they're down three games to zero, there's no secret formula or message for them. They're big guys, they know what the situation is, and they know we have to come out tomorrow and obviously win a game.

"It starts with that. You don't think about the four, you think about one, and that's basically what we were thinking about tonight."

Vogelsong, who has been magnificent in the postseason, was aided by two inning-ending double plays in the first three innings.

Then in the fifth, the Tigers had the bases loaded with one out but Quintin Berry struck out and Vogelsong got Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera to pop out to short.

Cabrera this year captured the first Triple Crown in the majors since 1967 but the 29-year-old seven-time All-Star has just two hits and one RBI in the series.

VOGELSONG SHINES

Vogelsong, who is 3-0 in the playoffs while giving up just three runs in 24 2/3 innings, breathed a sigh of relief after retiring Cabrera, calling him "the best hitter in the game".

"The way we were playing defense, I was really just trying to get him to put a ball in play somewhere, because I had a good feeling we were going to catch it if he did with the way these guys were all over the field tonight," said Vogelsong.

"I was just trying to make a pitch, and I was able to do that, and he popped it up."

The Tigers' other big gun, Prince Fielder, has one hit and no RBIs in the series.

"I don't make excuses," he said. "We are just not getting it done. We have to play it one game at time.

"Makes the series one game, all we can do is play hard."

Detroit, desperate for offense, lost the opener 8-3, scoring two give-away runs in the ninth after the game was all but decided. The next game they were blanked 2-0 on just two hits.

Sanchez took the loss for the Tigers on Saturday despite pitching well, giving up six hits and two runs while striking out eight.

Tigers right-fielder Andy Dirks conceded Cabrera's bases-loaded pop-up was a missed opportunity but added: "You have to create more than one situation a game to win."

"It was a big situation and it is not always going to happen," he said. "It's baseball. The best hitters in the game they succeed one out of three times.

"You just have to keep trying to put pressure on the other team as much as you can and maybe get a lucky."

The Giants are seeking their second title in three years, having beaten the Texas Rangers in a five-game World Series in 2010. (Editing by Nick Mulvenney)

Marigny community rallies around chef who lost savings in home ...

"It's a pretty valuable life lesson, that's for sure." -- Tres Barnard

On Oct. 19, Tres Barnard, a young New Orleans chef, was riding high. His new weekly soul food pop-up restaurant at Marie's Bar in?Faubourg Marigny, We've Got Soul, had done its best business yet, selling out all the food within?a few hours.

At the end of the night, Barnard walked his cash -- about $1,400 - around the corner from the bar to his house in the 2600 block of Burgundy Street, then headed back to the bar to clean up.

When Barnard returned home a few hours later, his flat-screen TV was missing. So was his laptop. And?all his cash, a total?of $2,100, was gone, too.

"That was the most crippling feeling I've ever felt in my life," Barnard, 26, said?a few days later. "I put in all that hard work and time, just to have it all taken away by some a--hole."

While burglary is not a violent crime and thus?does not?usually make headlines, it is one of New Orleans' most common. At least 75 burglaries have been reported in New Orleans in the last week, according to New Orleans Police Department data.

Officers came out to Barnard's house and took fingerprints. But, as with most burglaries, there was little other evidence.

A neighbor told police he had noticed a young man knocking on Barnard's door earlier that night. The man appeared to be in his early 20s and was wearing a green and white striped T-shirt, the neighbor said.

When the neighbor asked the stranger whom he was looking for, the?man responded, "I'm looking for James." The neighbor?told him?no one named James lived there. The man shrugged, got into a car but did not drive away. The car sat there, idling.

The burglar?apparently entered through Barnard's back door. There were no signs of forced entry, so Barnard thinks he may have left the door unlocked. That's the last time?he will make that mistake, he said.

"It's a pretty valuable life lesson, that's for sure," he said. "I'm going the extra mile from now on. I bought a safe, bolted it down to the floor. I changed all my locks. I'm doing everything I possibly can to make sure this doesn't happen again."

After losing all his money, Barnard thought he wouldn't be able to open his pop-up restaurant again for at least six months.

But his friends and neighbors,?upon hearing what Barnard had lost, rallied to help. Bill Walker, a co-owner of Lost Love Lounge on Franklin Avenue, hosted a fundraiser for Barnard and his girlfriend, Emily Reichley, who helps run the pop-up.

Another friend started a Facebook page seeking donations and help for the couple. They collected money through their website. All told, they received about $900 in donations, Barnard said.

And so, on Friday night, thanks to all the support -- including 80 pounds of donated shrimp -- Barnard and his girlfriend were able to open their pop-up again and make enough money to be back in business.

"It's pretty heartwarming, to say the least," Barnard said. "The community stood up for us. It was just amazing. It was one of those great things that happened in New Orleans and would never happen anywhere else."

20 Women On Advertising's Poach List - Business Insider

When we published our list of the 30 most powerful women in advertising, we also asked agencies and people in the marketing biz to tell us which women at competing shops they most admire or would love to hire, given a chance.

Click here to see who made the list>

From those confidential nominations, we've compiled this poach list of the most-wanted women in creative, management and account management.

Some of the names on our list are big-hitters who control major agencies, like Susan Gianinno, chairman and CEO of Publicis. How likely is it that she could be tempted to leave for another agency?

Well, consider that a select few big shops are looking to bolster their top talent. Earlier this month, we reported that DraftFCB CEO Laurence Boschetto is looking outside his agency for a new chief creative officer.

Furthermore, things have been in flux at McCann NY since Lori Senecal moved on to what's now Kirshenbaum Bond Senecal + Partners in 2009. Thom Gruhler stepped into her shoes as McCann's NY president for two years, before he exited to take on another role in the company. Colleagues told Ad Age he would be out by spring, which proved to be true when he moved on to Microsoft.

These women could fill any power vacuum.

Daniel's Law Passes in Pennsylvania to Ban Gassing Animals in ...

Daniel's Law Passes in Pennsylvania to Ban Gassing Animals in Shelters
Pennsylvania Senator Andrew Dinniman helped to shepherd Daniel's Law in his state, others will hopefully soon follow

I'm not sure that most people are aware of how animals in some shelters in some states are killed (euthanized is too kind a word) - they go into gas chambers and where carbon monoxide is used. Most of the time, animals with their expiration date are just brought in, cats with dogs, large dogs with small dogs, etc. The end happens.

It's not instant....those who do this work report animals screaming.

But ultimately the end happens - usually.

One dog who survived was Daniel. You can read Daniel's story here.

Joe Dwyer - wo adopted Daniel - has criss-crossed America attempting to ban gassing animals, and instead opt for ?euthanasia by injection (the same way endings occur for our beloved pets). Not only is this more humane, and less expensive but also it's simply the right thing to do....these shelter animals have done nothing wrong - the tragedy goes further than they "need" to die - it's how they die.

Pennsylvania is now among the states banning euthanasia by injection.

Hear my Steve Dale's Pet World interview with Dwyer and Senator Andrew Dinniman (D-Chester).

Here's a part of the press release from the American Humane?Association:

WASHINGTON, D.C., October 25, 2012 ? American Humane Association issued the following statement applauding Governor Tom Corbett?s signing of Pennsylvania H.B. 2630, banning the use of gas chambers to euthanize shelter animals:

?American Humane Association applauds Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett for signing H.B. 2630 into law.? The bill initially introduced by Senator Andrew Dinniman (D-Chester) and shepherded through the House by Representative John Maher, Chair of the House Agriculture Committee, outlaws the deplorable use of gas chambers to end the lives of homeless cats and dogs, the most cruel and inhumane practice imaginable. The measure, which calls for the use of established injectable euthanasia drugs administered only by licensed and certified individuals to ensure that these helpless and frightened animals do not needlessly face prolonged suffering and distress, received overwhelming bi-partisan support in both the Pennsylvania House and Senate.

?Each year, millions of dogs and cats face a prolonged and painful death in gas chambers, and rarely has an animal survived.?
