News of the World reporter claims unfair dismissal (AP)

LONDON ? Two reporters who were fired from the British newspaper News of the World have filed unfair dismissal claims against Rupert Murdoch's News International, officials said Wednesday.

News International said Wednesday it "will vigorously contest the case" filed by former chief reporter Neville Thurlbeck. A British employment tribunal filing showed that Thurlbeck's claim was filed on Sept. 13.

Thurlbeck is expected to claim he was fired for whistleblowing in the phone-hacking scandal that brought down his tabloid. A preliminary hearing will take place at the East London Tribunal Service center Friday.

The British news agency Press Association reported that another former journalist at the tabloid, Ian Edmondson, has lodged a similar claim for unfair dismissal. A person familiar with the matter confirmed that on condition of anonymity.

Edmondson was arrested along with Thurlbeck in April on suspicion of conspiring to intercept voicemail messages. Both have been released on bail pending further questioning.

Murdoch's News International had long maintained that the eavesdropping was limited to a single rogue reporter, Clive Goodman, and the private investigator he was working with to break into voicemails of members of the royal household. But an email uncovered during legal proceedings seemed to cast doubt on that claim. It contained a transcript of an illegally obtained conversation, drawn up by a junior reporter and marked "for Neville" ? an apparent reference to Thurlbeck.

Murdoch decided to close News of the World in July as allegations piled up that the tabloid systematically intercepted private voice mail of celebrities, politicians and crime victims.

In a separate development, the Labour Party urged Murdoch's son James to step down as the chairman of British Sky Broadcasting Group PLC over the scandal.

Pressure on the younger Murdoch intensified after former lieutenants contradicted his account of how much he knew about the scandal.

Delegates at the Labour Party's annual conference in Liverpool unanimously backed a call for his dismissal Friday. Union boss Len McCluskey, who put forward the motion, said his party "will no longer tolerate the corruption of decent values sadly witnessed in some quarters of our media in recent times."

News International did not immediately return a message seeking a reaction to the motion. BSkyB spokesman Robert Fraser declined comment.

Not all records are made to be broken

Some great baseball achievements will stand the test of time

Image: Cal Ripken Jr.Washington Post via Getty Images

Cal Ripken Jr. takes a victory lap after playing in a record 2,131st?straight game on Sept. 6, 1995. He would add another 501 games to his record before finally taking a day off in 1998.

"I'm hoping someday that some kid, black or white, will hit more home runs than myself. Whoever it is, I'd be pulling for him."
? Hank Aaron

It was April 8, 1974, when Hank Aaron flicked his wrists and sent the ball sailing over the left-field wall.

It was something he had done hundreds of times before, but this one was special. It was the 715th home run of his career, and it had broken the most-hallowed of all baseball records, a record held by the legendary Babe Ruth, a record that had stood for 39 years.

It was a mark some thought would never be broken, having been unchallenged for so long. Before Aaron, only one player had even managed to give it a serious run, and that player ? Willie Mays ? finally ran out of gas with 660 homers in 1973.

Aaron would go on to add 40 more home runs to his record, retiring in 1976 with 755. An amazing example of consistency and longevity, Aaron had to average 33 home runs a season over his 23-year career to set the record. If not hopelessly out of reach, his record certainly seemed secure.

Then again, Babe Ruth fans probably thought the same. They couldn?t have predicted Aaron would come along.

And then again, who could have predicted Barry Bonds?

Bonds, the surly slugger whose father Bobby was a contemporary of Aaron?s, brought an incredible combination of raw power, dazzling bat speed, and a surgeon?s eye to the game. Sparked by his amazing 73-homer season in 2001 (another record), he ended Aaron?s home run reign in 2007, and finished his career with 762.

There are plenty of questions about how Bonds attained the home run record, with many people believing he used illegal performance-enhancing drugs. (In his trial this year, a jury couldn?t decide if Bonds lied to a grand jury about his drug use, though he was convicted of obstruction of justice in the case.)

But regardless of how Bonds got there, the record remains. Now the only question is will anyone ever break it?

?Seventy-three home runs will probably never be done again,? says Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto, a two-time All-Star with 118 home runs in five seasons, ?and the (career) home run record will probably never be done again, at least in the next 100 years.?

Maybe so, but as Bonds? proved, you never know for sure.

Records are made to be broken, the old saying goes. Babe Ruth found out the saying was true, and Hank Aaron predicted it would be, but is that really the case?

Let?s take a look at some of the other great achievements in baseball, and with the help of input from the players themselves, attempt to predict which marks will fall, and which will stand the test of time.

CAL RIPKEN JR.?S STREAK OF 2,632 CONSECUTIVE GAMES PLAYED

Imagine going 17 years without missing a single day of work. Now Imagine your job description includes turning double plays as base-runners try to knock you on your backside, taking countless sprints around the bases, and dodging the occasional 95-mph fastball aimed at your ribs, knee, elbow, and hands. Now you have an idea what Cal Ripken Jr., who spent most of his career at the demanding position of shortstop, had to go through to break Lou Gehrig?s record.

?In baseball now, you play so hard,? says Texas Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre. ?You can pull a hamstring, you can sprain your wrist. There are so many things that go against even being close to that record.

?Even if you do stay healthy, you get tired. To be in the lineup every day, 162 games, is almost unheard of. You might last a couple years, but not 12 or 14 years.?

Ripken broke Gehrig?s 56-year-old record of 2,130 in 1995, then proceeded to add another whopping 501 games to his total.

To put it in perspective, only seven players have even played more than 1,000 games in a row, and the man in third place all-time ? Everett Scott ? compiled fewer than half as many as Ripken (1,307).

?It?s amazing what Cal Ripken did,? says Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann. ?I can?t even put into words how hard that is. To never have anything go wrong. Luck was on his side and he had the determination to go out there and perform every day. You put those things together and it?s amazing what he did.?

Verdict: Will anyone break Ripken?s record? ?I don?t see it happening,? says Beltre. We agree.

JOE DIMAGGIO?S 56-GAME HITTING STREAK/HITTING .400

We?ve included these two together because it?s been 60 years since either happened. It was 1941 when Yankees great Joe DiMaggio set his record. DiMaggio?s rival, Boston Red Sox legend Ted Williams, hit .406 that same year, and neither mark has been touched since. A Yankee and a Red Sox. Two amazing achievements that haven?t been matched in 60 years. It just seems right to keep them together.

Image: Joe DiMaggio

Keystone / Getty Images

Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio hit safely in 56-straight games in 1941.

There have been some close calls. Pete Rose compiled a 44-game hitting streak in 1978, and Paul Molitor reached 39 in 1987. In the chase for .400, Tony Gwynn hit .394 in 1994, and Rod Carew hit .388 in 1977. But that?s about it.

There are a number of reasons that will make it difficult for anyone to top either record, including an increasing reliance on specialist relievers out of the bullpen and the intense focus of attention from the modern-day 24-hour news cycle, neither of which DiMaggio or Williams had to face.

?If Ichiro can?t get it, nobody can get it,? says Votto, describing the type of player it would take to break DiMaggio?s streak. ?You can?t be a guy who walks, you can?t be a guy that strikes out. You can?t be a guy who is too deep in the order, because you?ll lose opportunities. And with the way the bullpens work now, if you?re at game 40, you?re facing some specialists-times-two, innings six-through-nine, for your last two at-bats. Good luck, you know??

Beltre agrees. ?It would take a contact hitter, a hitter kind of like Ichiro. A guy who can get a dribbler for a hit, who can get a blooper for a hit, a guy who doesn?t walk a lot, but he can get a hit any time.?

As far as hitting .400 goes, it would likely take the opposite kind of hitter, the kind who has a more discerning eye at the plate and is willing to be patient and wait for a good pitch to hit.

?It would take a lot of walks, a lot of walks, and a lot of walks,? says Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips. ?You gotta make sure you get at least two hits, or one hit and go 1-for-2. You gotta get two hits, or one hit and a lot of walks. Then you could do it.?

Verdict: Either mark could be reached under the right circumstances, but the planets would have to align in an almost unprecedented way. As Votto says, ?the pressure media wise and the overall attention will be exponentially more than anything Joe DiMaggio dealt with or Pete Rose dealt with. It?s too much.? That?s probably a big reason neither mark has been touched in 60 years.

MU study shows school-based physical activity program can change the way kids eat, exercise

COLUMBIA, Mo. The National Survey of Children's Health indicates 31 percent of Missouri children are overweight or obese; yet, the state lacks physical activity requirements for students and nutritional standards for school meals beyond those recommended by the USDA. A new study from the University of Missouri shows Jump Into Action (JIA), a school-based physical activity program, is effective in changing unhealthy youth behaviors.

JIA aims to help fifth-graders make healthy food choices and become more physically active. The program, taught over the course of the school year, uses a team approach to support students as they set goals to become healthier. Teams of four adults, including the participants' physical education teachers, classroom teachers, school nurses and parents, serve as role models. Students are given pedometers to monitor physical activity, and they attend classroom and physical education lessons weekly. In addition, monthly check-ups reinforce the lessons and parent newsletters allow family members to support health goals at home.

Steve Ball, associate professor of nutrition and exercise physiology in the College of Human Environmental Sciences and MU Extension State Specialist, says changing behavior in childhood can lead to healthier adult lives.

"Self efficacy plays an important role in how students behave, feel and think," Ball said. "After participating in Jump into Action, students demonstrated increased knowledge of health behaviors, and they adopted many of these behaviors. These improvements in self efficacy may prove to be important determinants of health for these students in the future."

The purpose of the study was to assess the impact of JIA on physical activity levels, knowledge and engagement in health behaviors, self-efficacy, and goals for improving nutrition and health. The study showed that JIA participants reported drinking less soda and other sugary drinks, being more physically active, and consuming more servings of dairy products, fruits and vegetables. Students also reported decreased screen time, or time spent using the computer, watching television or playing video games.

"I have been impressed with the increased knowledge and awareness that our students have regarding nutrition and exercise," a school nurse said. "They are questioning why school lunches aren't healthier and taking active roles in making informed choices."

###

JIA has been in Missouri schools since 2004 and has reached 45,000 children in 28 counties. Ball hopes the new research will allow the program to expand nationally and internationally. The program is facilitated by University of Missouri Extension. It was developed with funding from the Missouri Foundation for Health and the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City. The study will be published in The Journal of Extension.

LOUDON, N.H. | Kyle Busch wins Trucks race at New Hampshire ...

--?

Kyle Busch can see the time when his own team thrives without him behind the wheel.

That time is not now - not with sponsors clamoring to sticker his truck with ads. Busch's success drives the corporate dollars that fill the Kyle Busch Motorsports coffers, almost forcing him out on the track most weeks to keep the company running.

"They want the guaranteed chance to go to Victory Lane," Busch said.

Busch is about as close as it gets to a guaranteed win in the Trucks Series. His latest victory was a romp, as he led all but 10 laps in one of the more dominating performances this season in the Trucks Series to win the race Saturday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

"It was fun for us," Busch said, "maybe not for others."

Busch started from the pole and was never threatened en route to his 30th career victory in the series. He led 165 of the 175 laps and won for the sixth time this season.

Busch has 18 victories this season in Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Trucks.

Oh, and Busch believed he can duplicate the dominance on Sunday in the Sprint Cup series.

"A lot of the feel that I've been looking for in my Cup car I felt this weekend in my truck," Busch said. "We made a lot of changes to my Cup car over the weekend this weekend. We're vastly different than we've ever run here in the past. I'm hoping it doesn't bite us, but I can't see us going in the wrong direction."

Austin Dillon was second and claimed the lead in the points standings. He leads James Buescher by two points and has the championship in sight as the season winds down. Dillon chewed up some seconds on Busch's lead over the final laps, but it was way too late to end up in Victory Lane.

"He had such a big lead there at the end," Dillon said. "We could make big chunks of time out of his lead when he got in traffic and that was the only time we could gain on him. I wish we could have come out closer to him on pit road."

Dillon wasn't close on pit road and he couldn't catch him at the finish line. That spot was reserved for Busch.

"The truck was awesome today," Busch said.

Kevin Harvick, Ron Hornaday and Johnny Sauter rounded out the top five. Matt Crafton was sixth and only six drivers finished on the lead lap.

It was that kind of race, leaving little for Busch to break down. He stormed to the lead and stayed there under green to prove why he's one of the top drivers in any form of racing.

So talk turned to the future of Kyle Busch Motorsports. Busch said there are plans to expand the operation in the Trucks Series and maybe start a Nationwide team. Of course, it all depends on whether Busch can generate the sponsors needed to keep that many entries afloat.

"We'd like to move into two full time trucks at least and we'll see what happens from there," Busch said.

Once of those future plans could see Busch surrendering his ride. Busch, who won his 104th career NASCAR race, set 200 victories as a goal and stepping away from the Trucks Series could curtail that number.

"We've got to make sure that we can live and strive off of somebody besides myself," Busch said. "We're working towards that and we're trying really, really hard."

'Shadowgun' aims to be the iPhone's 'Gears of War'

Madfinger

Forthcoming game "Shadowgun" promises to put some "Gears of War" into your smartphone.

By Winda Benedetti

It seems Madfinger Games is out to prove that you don't have to build a casual, bird-flinging puzzler?to make a hit smartphone game.

Perhaps more importantly, the studio?? based in the Czech Republic?? wants to prove that smartphones and tablets can deliver high-quality shooting games that will please the hardcore gaming masses.

Madfinger plans to launch its highly anticipated game "Shadowgun" for iPhones and iPads this Wednesday. It's a third-person shooter they say was inspired by "Gears of War," the beloved hardcore gaming franchise that makes its home on the Xbox 360.

And when it comes to "Shadowgun,"?MadFinger is making some big promises, calling?it?"the most advanced handheld game in the market," one that will offer gamers "the same quality expected from console gaming systems."

The gist of the game is this:

SHADOWGUN puts players into the role of John Slade, a professional bounty hunter in the year 2350. Slade?s mission: hunt down Dr. Edgar Simon, renowned geneticist and former employee of the trans-galactic corporation Toltech Enterprises. Players must lead ?shadowgun? John Slade as he infiltrates Dr. Simon?s mountain fortress and fights his personal army of mutants, cyborgs, and genetically-enhanced humanoids. Using state-of-the-art weaponry, ships, and the assistance of S.A.R.A.?Slade?s personal android assistant.

And if you want to see it in action, check out this launch trailer.

If the trailer is any indication, "Shadowgun" certainly looks top-notch.

Of course, how well a third-person shooter handles on an iDevice is another question. ("Shadowgun" will be coming to Android devices shortly after the iOS release.) Making core games enjoyable to play when smartphones don't have any thumbsticks remains something of a sticking point. It's?one of the reason core gamers often dismiss smartphone/tablet games and find themselves drawn to Sony's forthcoming PlayStation Vita?portable game machine?(and its two thumbsticks) instead.

That said, while casual physics, puzzle and word games like "Angry Birds," "Tiny Wings" and "Words with Friends" remain the reigning kings of smartphone gaming, a growing number of titles with a hardcore bent?? "Infinity Blade," and "Rage" for example?? are successfully making their way to these devices.

Though they probably won't be gunning down those furious fowl any time soon,?perhaps they might one day pluck a few of their feathers.

ISO 18001 Improves Business Environmental Safety

???

By : Lewis Norman ?? 9 or more times read
Submitted 2011-09-23 22:03:08

In spite of all precautions, work-related accidents and health issues are fairly common. Not only do they commonly injure employees, but can often generate a chain-reaction of mayhem affecting nearly all levels of a corporation. They can mean lost work hours and subsequent production drops, compensatory damages and fines, and the loss of employee trust and sometimes even potential customers. ISO 18001 was created to help any business to control its health safety and occupational risks, and to implement a management and control system that is a good fit with current company regulations.

This regulatory system promotes standardized safety procedures within any workplace organization. It helps companies reduce the need for forcibly enacted legislative controls, and reduces the potential for accidents ultimately leading to a decline in overall performance. Rather than simply generating more bureaucracy, implementation of these regulations usually has a very positive effect in the workplace.

The benefits are often measurable. There is a reduced rate and chance of accidents, which lowers employee absentee rates, while minimizing the chance of incurring penalties or citations from safety violations and infractions. The cost of insurance premiums often declines, and the overall corporate image presented to the world usually improves. Even business-to-business, an excellent safety standard means a better reputation.

The basic requirements must be met, however, in order to cope with any potential problems that may accompany a current assessment and health management system. Finding exactly what these requirements are can often be accomplished either by hiring a specially focused consulting firm, or by promoting internal training leading which can lead to official certification. When ultimately in place, property damage is often reduced by those requirements, and compensation claims usually drop.

Regardless of a company's size, the International Standard For Quality Management Systems can help spell out new internal regulations. Occupational risks and hazards are controlled and identified within a basic framework. Even when a company has a basic set of regulations in place, it may still qualify for help eliminating any danger to employees that still remains.

Business-related fatalities have remained almost constant statistically for the past few years in the United Kingdom. Further reduction of that figure requires real-life controls, notably in any workplace not yet conforming to the rules of relevant legislation. Specific training is the key to practical implementation of all safety and health practices not yet in compliance.

Relevant answers to workplace standards questions are provided to employees undertaking such training. Training also gives students the knowledge and the skills that help to implement environmental guidelines on every level, including those assessments made internally, and recommendations that are submitted by outside evaluators. Completion of that training means certification in ISO 18001 processes and requirements.

Establishing certification also can mean that both employees and management will come to a complete understanding of the business advantages that are a result of improved working conditions based on health and safety management recommendations. Both groups will experience the logical process of intelligent implementation, and will know how to best conform to any requirements that result from an audit. Compliance with ISO 18001 means fewer safety-related issues, decreased illness-related insurance claims and a company's legal liabilities. Both factors can benefit the yearly bottom line.

The Gynecologic Oncology Center at Cooper Cancer Institute on the ...

With five fellowship-trained subspecialists, the Gynecologic Oncology Center at Cooper Cancer Institute is the largest program of its kind in New Jersey. But what truly distinguishes the Center is the team?s depth of experience and expertise in innovative diagnostic and treatment technologies, and its comprehensive clinical
and supportive care services.

?There?s no reason to send any South Jersey patient with ovarian, cervical or uterine cancer to any other hospital,? says David P. Warshal, MD, Head of Cooper?s Division of Gynecologic Oncology. ?We provide virtually every aspect of gynecologic oncology care; and, with five offices located throughout South Jersey, and one in Langhorne, PA, access to advanced care is exceptionally convenient.?

ADVANCED DIAGNOSTIC AND TREATMENT TECHNOLOGIES
Cooper gynecologic oncologists use sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic technologies including intraperitoneal chemotherapy, CyberKnife? radiosurgery, robotic-assisted surgery with the da Vinci?
Surgical System and minimally invasive surgery.

Intraperitoneal chemotherapy is a significant weapon in the Center?s arsenal for treating ovarian cancer. This highly specialized treatment, in which chemotherapy is delivered directly into the abdominal cavity via catheter, has been shown to extend survival by up to 16 months in patients with advanced ovarian cancer who have achieved optimal results from surgery to debulk their tumors. Intraperitoneal chemotherapy is a rigorous treatment option that demands a high level of clinical expertise to manage toxicity issues.

?Over half of all our patients with advanced ovarian cancer are candidates for this treatment,? says Dr. Warshal. ?And we are the only practice in South Jersey to offer it.?

?CyberKnife is a non-invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of isolated recurrences of cervical, ovarian and endometrial tumors,? says Dr. Warshal. ?We work closely with our colleagues in radiation
oncology to develop and implement a treatment plan for our patients using this innovative technology.?

With its pinpoint precision, CyberKnife is particularly effective in treating complex and difficult-to-reach tumors. Appropriate patients can be treated in as few as one to five outpatient visits compared to traditional
radiation therapy which is administered over weeks or months.

A MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO CARE
Cooper?s gynecologic oncologists participate in weekly, multidisciplinary gynecologic tumor conferences.

hormonally to preserve fertility. We are also one of a limited number of Centers preserving fertility in young women with early cervical cancers by performing a new, uterus-conserving surgical technique called
radical trachelectomy.?

CANCER GENETICS PROGRAM
Approximately 5 percent to 10 percent of all cancers are hereditary, meaning that they are related to a genetic
change that can be passed through the generations. Cooper Cancer Institute offers a Cancer Genetics Program to assess each patient?s risk for hereditary breast, ovarian, uterine, colon and other cancers that may run in a family. Patients are empowered when provided with the information they need to make important decisions about genetic testing, as well as cancer treatment and prevention measures.

GOG is a National Cancer Institute-supported research cooperative, giving patients with gynecologic malignancies access to novel therapies through an active clinical trials network. Approximately 45 GOG-initiated clinical trials are active at any one time ? and available to Cooper patients.

Solyndra execs invoke the Fifth (Politico)

Solyndra executives repeatedly invoked the Fifth Amendment this morning as House lawmakers pressed them to answer questions about the company's financial collapse and any hopes of repaying their $535 million federal loan guarantee.

"While I hope to have an opportunity to assist this committee in the future, on the advice of my attorney, I must respectfully decline to answer any questions," Solyndra CEO Brian Harrison told Energy and Commerce oversight subpanel Chairman Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.), who opened the questioning.

CFO Brian Stover gave a similar response.

The repeated questions drew an objection from Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), who slammed Republicans for persisting even after knowing that the executives would invoke their right to remain silent.

"I just want to take this moment to assert the fact that I think it's unseemly and inappropriate for members to be asking questions that you know they will not answer," Waxman said, saying the GOP questions were "sound bites" for the press.

Meanwhile, full committee Chairman Fred Upton called it unseemly for the White House to respond to the Solyndra scandal by highlighting Republican lawmakers' past support for clean energy projects in their districts.

"The administration's actions in this case are deeply troubling and so is their response to our findings," said the Michigan Republican, who quoted from a POLITICO story on the White House efforts.

He added: ?This is not a debate about the virtues of clean energy, it is a serious inquiry into reckless use of taxpayer dollars on a company that was known to pose serious risks before a single dime went out the door.

"Let me just warn you and the other folks involved in this taxpayer rip-off," Upton said. "We're not done. No we're not."

But Waxman sounded a theme similar to the White House's.

"Republicans in Congress are now dancing on Solyndra's grave, but they seem to have a case of collective amnesia," said Waxman. He cited several members of the panel who have sought federal subsidies on energy, including Upton, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, Charlie Bass of New Hampshire, Brian Bilbray of California and Mary Bono Mack of California.

Signs of China slowdown add to dim global outlook (AP)

SHANGHAI ? Signs that the powerhouse Chinese economy is slowing have spooked global markets and sharpened fears that the world economy will not escape another recession, so much so that a small, preliminary survey of Chinese manufacturers contributed to a global stock market plunge this week.

However, analysts said Friday that the dramatic fallout from a preliminary reading of HSBC's index of manufacturing for September far exceeded the data's importance. And while the world's No. 2 economy is slowing as expected, they said, growth will remain relatively strong.

If nothing else, the market rout that began Thursday and continued Friday reflects how much the rest of the world is relying on China, one of the few big economies that is expanding at a rapid clip, to stave off recession.

HSBC's preliminary survey, released about a week before the final survey is due, showed a two-month low of 49.4. That followed an August reading of 49.9, and anything under 50 indicates that activity is contracting.

Coming alongside weak indicators from other major economies, the data prompted panicked selling by global investors afraid that governments hamstrung by debt crises, inflation and unemployment may be unable to avert a recession.

But the HSBC survey is only a monthly snapshot, ill-suited to indicate long-term trends, said Xianfang Ren, chief China economist for IHS Global Insight.

It also is heavily weighted toward exporters, which are bound to be feeling cautious given the current global outlook, and is not a reliable measure of the broader economy, said CLSA analyst Andy Rothman. An official manufacturing index that surveys a bigger number of companies is due around the end of September.

"If you look at other measures of what's happening in China ... everything is cooling down, but not dramatically, and there's still strong growth," Rothman said. Most forecasters expect economic growth of above 9 percent this year and between 8.5 percent and 9 percent next year.

Still, what's clear is that China's role in powering world growth is significant.

That's especially so for nations such as Australia that are heavily dependent on China's voracious demand for the minerals they export, and for export-reliant countries in Asia including Singapore, Taiwan and Japan. The Conference Board forecasts China will account for about a third of the increase in global GDP this year.

Yet despite China's rising power, experts say its economy is still not big or strong enough to fully compensate for meltdowns elsewhere, since its own investment and spending is only one-sixth that of the European Union and United States.

"From a global perspective, China's domestic demand is still way too small to offset the impact of a recession" in Europe and the U.S., Deutsche Bank economist Ma Jun said in a report.

To make up for a 3 percentage point drop in growth in those economies, China would have to grow by 18 percent this year, he says.

"This is mission impossible."

Some worry that China's economic planners in their zeal to reduce inflation from near three-year highs could overshoot by cooling the economy too much. August's inflation figure of 6.2 percent, down from 6.5 percent in July, suggests that Beijing's inflation battle may be yielding results that would allow it greater leeway for policies aimed at keeping growth on track.

A drop in global demand for China's exports could also wallop its economy, as it did in 2008, though domestic factors such as consumer spending and investment in infrastructure are increasingly driving growth.

Most economists still downplay any risk of a so-called "hard landing" in China that would darken the global outlook.

Such fears are "unwarranted," said HSBC's own economist Hongbin Qu. "Resilient domestic demand is sufficient to support around 8.5 percent to 9 percent growth in the coming quarters."

China's advantages over other major economies include its relatively low level of debt despite growing worries over local government borrowing, its cash-rich corporate sector and pent-up demand among its newly affluent consumers.

Massive stimulus spending launched in response to the 2008 global crisis is still washing through the economy, driving sales for both heavy industries like steel and cement, and light ones such as appliances, clothing and home furnishings.

"Chinese companies are making money and the private consumption is increasing. If we assume government spending remains at the current level, the economy will continue to grow," said Peng Yunliang, a strategist with Shanghai Securities.

Earlier this week, the International Monetary Fund cut its growth forecast for China this year, but only by one tenth of a percentage point to 9.5 percent.

In revising its outlook for China, the IMF reiterated its advice to Beijing to do more to spur consumer demand, in part by improving social services to help relieve pressures on families to save disproportionate amounts of their income to cover their medical, education and retirement needs.

(AP) ? Egypt's military ruler and Hosni Mubarak's former confidant testified Saturday in a rare high-profile appearance at the trial of the ousted president charged with complicity in the killings of protesters during the crackdown on Egypt's uprising.

Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi arrived under military escort on Saturday morning at the heavily guarded courtroom in Cairo for the nearly hour-long testimony, which is under a complete media blackout. Mubarak was present in the courtroom during Tantawi's testimony, lying on a gurney inside the defendants' cage.

Tantawi, who was defense minister for two decades, could provide critical insight into Mubarak's alleged role in the deaths of nearly 840 protesters as well as insider revelations about the former regime's final days.

Also on trial with Mubarak and facing the same charges are his former Interior Minister Habib el-Adly and six senior former security officials. Separately, Mubarak and his two sons, Alaa and Gamal, also face corruption charges.

The trial is also seen as a test between Egypt's traditional power structure and the impatience for clear breaks with the past, seven months after Mubarak was toppled in February and power shifted to a military council headed by Tantawi.

As Tantawi testified, dozens of activists and families of slain protesters rallied outside the court, chanting, "Tantawi, tell the truth, is Mubarak a killer or not," as they waved pictures of those killed in the uprising.

Gomaa Ali, a lawyer representing the family of 17-year-old slain protester Mohammed Abdel Gawad, said he expected Tantawi's testimony to be "decisive in convicting Mubarak" because he was part of the former president's inner circle.

"He was inside the operation room, behind the closed doors all during the days of the revolution. He knows all the secrets," said Ali.

A group of pro-Mubarak supporters also rallied outside the courtroom, separated from the families of the slain protesters by anti-riot police and army troops.

Tantawi was initially set to testify on Sept. 11, but failed to attend the session citing a busy schedule and instead offering to submit a written testimony. The development at the time raised suspicions of hesitation by Mubarak's former allies to face him in court and possibly shed embarrassing secrets.

But the judge summoned Tantawi again and he agreed to appear at Saturday's hearing.

The trial depends heavily on accounts of members of the former president's inner circle who testified last week. Among those who testified was spy chief Omar Sueliman, who was appointed vice president by Mubarak during the uprising.

Egypt's Chief of Staff Sami Anan ? the second highest-ranking figure on the military council ? is expected to testify on Sunday.

The lawyers of victims' families had demanded Tantawi testify because he had publicly suggested the army rejected the use of force against protesters.

Addressing a graduation ceremony of police cadets in May, Tantawi said the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces convened in the middle of the uprising and decided not to open fire at the protesters. But he didn't elaborate on who gave the orders for security forces to turn their weapons against protesters.

How To Integrate Proven Time Management Skills in Your Internet ...

There is not a lot that is exciting about time management even though it has the potential for doing good things for your business. There is nothing wrong with turning to methods designed to help you be more efficient, and in fact all business owners feel the pressure and many take action. It is best to have a strong foundation already in place before you begin applying time management principles.

All businesses on the internet would love to have more Fast Cash Commissions; however you do not want to cause unexpected problems just because you did not have all the facts about it, beforehand. Take your market audience, for instance, you have to know them but lots of IM marketers seem to overlook doing basic research about that. Demographic research will provide you with in-depth information that can potentially produce excellent returns if used properly. Perhaps the most significant reason is due to creating an effective process for marketing and advertising. As you know, the people for whom you write, your audience, have to be able to identify with them. There is quite a complex process involved that ultimately leads to people clicking on an order button or subscribing, etc.

Learning how to extract the most from your available time involves changing perspectives and also training your mind. One thing that cannot be overlooked in business is planning because all else flows from it. You cannot achieve any objectives if you do not know how to get them or where to go. What do you plan? You plan on figuring out a way to reach goals you create. Also, your direction will make your time management methods far more effective.

Most people waste too much time throughout their work day, and that is something you need to be objective about with your self. This is your business, and you have to take it very seriously even if you are just starting out and have not earned a single dime or penny.

If you need to stop doing something, then just do it ? simple as that. If you cannot outsource anything due to cash, then you need to buckle down and become more efficient. Also remember that you will be changing patterns and habits, and that will take a little time and more effort.

If you want to get the absolute most from Fast Cash Commissions and all it has to offer, then you will need additional information. If you found your self nodding your head because it seems all too obvious, then you have to keep in mind all those who do not have your level of expertise. Just like all else regardless of what it is, a solid working base consisting of basic principles is necessary. We always strive to offer very helpful information that is actionable; it is by no means a thorough presentation. We are constantly looking for small things that can be built on or revised in a way that gives us some leverage. Setting the right goals and time management go hand in hand, which is why you should be reasonable when setting tasks, goals, etc. You do not want to go from information overload to overwhelm with a goal that may not be appropriate for where you are at the moment. Rome wasn?t built in a day, so take small and reasonable step towards fulfilling your tasks and reaching your goals. What you need to see happening are the positive results of what you are doing.

Contrary to the popular belief, time management isn?t as difficult as it sounds. In a lot of ways this will be like a self improvement program because you will need to work on things within your own mind. Yes, you will face hurdles and this may make it difficult for you to focus on the various aspects of time management, but if you really want to taste success with your IM business, you will move past these hurdles and actually make time management a habit.

Rest assured, you have just received an introduction about these techniques. All right, you have just read about these three approaches used with Ultra Spinnable Articles , but get ready because there is so much that was left out. Sometimes we have enough room in an article so a person can begin right away, but usually it is best to dig deeper because of the scope of the particular strategy.

For those who are not as aggressive or as confident as others, be wary of hiding behind all the ebooks and courses.

The world is full of intelligent and highly talented people who only dream and never move forward to make their dreams real. Work on your sense of self-discipline, and that could mean dragging your self to your computer in the evening after your regular job and just working for half an hour or an hour.

Pope to arrive on state visit to Germany (AP)

BERLIN ? Pope Benedict XVI launches his first state visit to his native Germany on Thursday with an address to parliament that many lawmakers have vowed to boycott in protest.

On the eve of the pope's arrival, Chancellor Angela Merkel sought to ease tensions among lawmakers who have argued that allowing Benedict to address parliament violates Germany's separation of church and state.

"Our nation, our constitution and our society are largely based on Christian beliefs," Merkel told members of her Christian Democratic party in Berlin.

She expressed the hope the papal visit could give Germans "a sense of orientation in these certainly not easy times."

During his four-day trip, the pope will meet with leaders of Germany's Jewish and Muslim communities, celebrate three Masses in three different places, hold an ecumenical service with Lutheran church members and possibly meet with victims who were abused by priests.

Although polls have indicated many Germans, roughly 30 percent of whom are Roman Catholic, are indifferent to the papal visit ? his third here since Joseph Ratzinger became pope in 2005 ? so many wanted to attend the first Mass, organizers had to move it to Berlin's Olympic stadium. All 70,000 seats are sold out.

Police began blocking off streets Wednesday in the neighborhood where the pope will be staying while in Berlin, and setting up barricades to surround the Reichstag, where parliament meets.

At the same time, the first protesters staged demonstrations in the capital, including two men who dressed as Adolf Hitler and Benedict, and posed in front of parliament before police hauled them away.

Several groups have registered demonstrations to be held in Berlin on Thursday, and in other cities during the pope's visit.

On Friday, Benedict travels to Erfurt, where he will meet with members of Germany's Lutheran church in the monastery where Martin Luther lived as a monk during the 1500s.

From there, he journeys Saturday to more heavily Catholic Freiburg in Germany's southwest, where he will meet church leaders and celebrate a final Mass before returning to Rome on Sunday.

Telus launches Optimus Black in white, doesn't believe in paradoxes

For those who like a good dose of irony with their Cheerios, there's the LG Optimus Black -- now available in white. Like its darker cousin released in Canada earlier this summer, the Black in white (seriously...), will feature the same specs as the original (a 5 megapixel camera, unlimited Skype-to-Skype calling and a 4-inch IPS display) as well as an identical contract-dependant price tag. Starting tomorrow, the phone will be available on the Telus network, but there's no word yet whether its American twin will get the same whitewash treatment. This latest pair of handsets now joins a distinguished list of ebony and ivory favorites: Oreos, tuxedos and Michael Jackson songs (video after the break).
