Haitian president urged to control ex-soldiers

PORT-AU-PRINCE | Sun Apr 1, 2012 12:20am BST

PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) - A Haitian government panel has urged the president to appoint an interim commander to take charge of former soldiers, a panel member said on Saturday, as the leader of a successful 2004 uprising warned that ex-members of the military could seize power.

Several thousand former members of the military that was disbanded in 1995 by then-President Jean-Bertrand Aristide after a series of coups, have occupied government buildings and former army camps, defying injunctions from the government to leave.

They are often seen armed and in military uniforms in the streets and sometimes even directing traffic, fuelling concerns of instability in a nation still struggling to recover from a catastrophic 2010 earthquake.

A panel appointed by President Michel Martelly to study reviving the military recommended in a report that he appoint a provisional army high command to deal with thousands of former soldiers and young, armed volunteers who want the army restored, said George Michel, a well-known doctor and historian who is on the panel.

The report was submitted in late December but has not been made public.

"If there is a high command, all those who claim they are part of the military will have to comply with orders from their superiors," said Michel, who estimated the number of former soldiers and recruits at 15,000 and growing.

"Otherwise, even from their own point of view, they would not be able to continue to claim that they are members of the army."

More than two dozen of those former soldiers and new recruits, many armed and some in combat positions, accompanied Guy Philippe, who led the rebellion that toppled Aristide in 2004 and forced him into exile, as he gave a live interview on Radio Caraibes, Haiti's most popular station.

Aristide returned to Haiti a year ago.

"The warning I could send is that before long those groups will reach 30,000 men and any general that could emerge as their leader could take over power," Philippe told Reuters after the interview.

He urged Martelly to accept the commission's recommendations and appoint an interim high commander to take charge of them.

"They have weapons, they are trained and if they become a loose army, no one will be able to control them," Philippe said.

Martelly supports the idea of reconstituting the army but has called on the ex-soldiers to put down their weapons and vacate the camps until the government makes a decision.

He has said Haitians would prefer to have their country protected by its own army rather than United Nations troops who have acted as peacekeepers in the impoverished Caribbean nation on and off since 1994.

U.N. officials are concerned that restoring the army could undermine international efforts to train and equip a new civilian police force, a key goal of the U.N. mission in Haiti. Critics also point to the army's appalling human rights record, including a bloody coup in 1991.

DEA TARGET

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has tried several times to arrest Philippe on drug trafficking charges.

The U.S. agency launched two failed raids in 2007 and 2009 - one in the southern city of Les Cayes and the other in the south-western town of Pestel - using helicopters and other means to try to capture Philippe. He went into hiding, but still has made occasional surprise appearances in public.

Philippe's appearance at the radio station marked the first time his presence was announced in advance. On Thursday in the northern town of Cap-Haitien, he participated in a march organized by former soldiers to request the return of the army.

"DEA has no authority to arrest anyone in Haiti. The law says who can arrest who in Haiti. I am no drug dealer. They are only making a plot to assassinate me," Philippe said.

He was cheered by dozens of spectators as he left the radio station and was escorted to his vehicle by former soldiers. Philippe said he would spend the night in the Lamentin Camp, a former military training camp in the capital that is now occupied by several thousand ex-soldiers and their allies.

What You Ought To Know About Debt Negotiation Help | Debt Help ...

Is your life being destroyed by debt? Do you owe a lot more than you may afford to pay? Are your monthly minimum payments draining your income and holding you back from paying off the balance of what you owe? If that?s the case, and if you wish to steer clear of bankruptcy proceedings, debt settlement help might be the right choice for you.

How does debt negotiation help work? Debt negotiation is a form of financial settlement in which consumers bargain with their lenders. The objective for a customer is to be released from a huge part of what she owes, while the goal for her creditors is to obtain as much of the debt as possible in one lump sum. In a typical settlement, the consumer agrees to pay between 40-60% of what she owes in one lump sum, while her creditors agree to release her from what remains. Debt negotiation is a growing business, and debt settlement support is easily available. More customers have come to see its value as a way off the so called "credit treadmill," while more lenders have come to see it as a way to get back some of their money instead of losing all of it in bankruptcy or collection lawsuits. For consumers it represents an escape from the so called "credit treadmill"; for creditors, it offers a very reliable strategy to collect a considerable portion of their money, as opposed to seeing it all disappear in bankruptcy or collection proceedings. And the debt negotiation industry, governed by new federal regulations enacted over the past several years, is a much more reliable place than it used to be.

Getting stuck on the credit treadmill means you are making never ending minimum monthly payments on your debts, which reduces your income and depletes what little money you might have been able to spend on the outstanding balance. Sometimes it seems the only escape is filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy, but most customers don?t qualify, and the credit of those who do is ruined. Debt settlement help may be a better option.

Debt negotiation organizations regrettably have something of a bad reputation. Until several years ago, the industry was unregulated, making it possible for unethical organizations to charge up-front fees and leave clients twisting without ever reaching settlements. These companies also often failed to inform customers of the risks of debt settlement.

But new regulations were put in place in 2010 as amendments to the Federal Trade Commission?s Telemarketing Sales Rule, which covers telemarketing and other alike business practices. Firms that sell debt settlement help over the telephone aren?t allowed to charge fees before attaining settlements reducing their customers? debts. Organizations also cannot front load fees so that consumers pay more for a first negotiation than for later settlements, a setup that would give unscrupulous companies incentive to settle just one debt for each client.

Settlement organizations are also required to disclose the likely length of negotiations, the cost, and possible risks. For one thing, credit ratings normally suffer from debt settlement, though bankruptcy normally causes worse damage.

Many consumers choose to bypass debt settlement help negotiate with creditors on their own. They often run into a problem, however: They simply do not have much bargaining power, unlike settlement companies, which work with creditors all the time. Consumers acting without help also have to work their way through creditor bureaucracy alone.

Lovers of the written word, unite! ? Old Gold & Black

On Saturday, March 24, students, alumni, faculty and members of the community gathered in Benson University Center for a spectacular celebration of the art of writing. The event was the first ever Words Awake!, a conference dedicated entirely to writers and the written word.

While numerous novelists, journalists, screenwriters, poets and even hip-hop artists came to Wake Forest to join in on the celebration and tell their stories, they all had one aspect in common: each writer invited back to the conference to speak was once a student at Wake Forest.

?It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have a group of such accomplished writers together in the same place who have the common thread of graduating from Wake Forest,? senior Hannah Kay Hunt said of the event.

The event kicked off on March 23 in the Porter B. Byrum Welcome Center with a documentary show by alum Tom Hayes (?79) on his father, Harold Hayes (?48), an influential editor of Esquire?magazine and another Wake Forest alumni.

Afterward, Provost Ed Wilson (?43) gave a speech on the history of writers from the university.

Earlier in the day, the writers visited 10 different schools in the Winston-Salem community to hold workshops, give readings and immerse local students in the world of writing as a career.

But the real conference didn?t start until March 24. Benson University Center was filled by 8:30 a.m. with people of all ages who were interested in writing and reading.

Alumni gathered in groups to talk and reminisce about days spent at Wake, curious students walked around, waiting for the panels to begin and young children accompanied their parents to hear a favorite author speak. The panels, which were given in groups of four throughout the day, ranged in topic from ?Writing for Children/the Young Adult Mind? and ?Writing Screenplay? to ?Writing Washington News? and ?Writing Sports.?

The panels focused on letting the writers explain their journey to and the experience of writing in the field that they were currently employed, and then the panel was opened up to questions from the audience. Interspersed between the panels were readings of new novels, poetry or other works given by published authors.

The largest issue addressed was, inevitably, the future of writing, especially in journalism, and if newspapers and magazines will be able to survive the ?digital age.? Some writers, such as Shane Harris (?98), were adamant that print and journalism as a whole was alive and well, and that the written word remained important. ?I have great hope for the written word,? Harris said. ?I don?t think print is dying, at all.?

Yet other panelists, such as Linda Brinson (?69), saw the future of print and journalism not in newspapers or even websites, but in iPad apps for quick news and magazines sent directly to the inbox of a subscriber.

Helen Anders (?74), who is currently a freelance humor columnist, said that an aspiring writer should ?Find a niche, something you are good at.? She predicted that journalism would soon become a specialists? game.

Another topic of debate, which especially came up in creative writing panels, was the issue of self-publishing, a subject which plagues writers of all ages, aspiring or not. Self-publication for many authors seems to be more of a viable choice in today?s world. Trice Hickman (MALS ?98), for example, made a career for herself through self-publishing and now has a contract with a major book publisher.

On the other hand, though, many authors insisted that the greatest help a writer could have was an editor who truly believed in them and could help their craft immensely.

Saturday concluded with a banquet, given in honor of the inductees to the brand new Writers Hall of Fame, which included Hayes, Wilson, Bynum Shaw, Maya Angelou and 11 others. The Hall of Fame is now on display outside of the writing center in Z. Smith Reynolds library.

The event ended on March 25 with a small meet-and-greet for writers and students; the students were given a chance to interact with and ask advice from the attending writers.

When asked what piece of advice a writer could give to a student looking to make a career of writing, each responded with something different.

?The best training for a job in journalism is to saddle up next to someone who will mentor you,? Harris said. ?If you find that person, they will teach you what you need to know.?

Jane Bianchi (?05), the current editor of Daily Health News, was adamant in her advice. ?Internships really matter more than anything.? She went on to say that the job experience and the networking opportunities given by an internship, even unpaid, could lead to a job further down the line which could define one?s career.

Some authors, though, were persistent that a dream and hard work could turn an aspiring author into a published one.

?Whether you want to be an author, a journalist or whatever, have a plan,? Trice Hickman said. ?Even if the plan doesn?t pan out, you?ll know where you want to go and different ways to get there.?

Maggie Quale: Save Our Soaps!

Most of you reading this probably don't know that the real Todd Manning finally just returned to Llanview after eight years of being held captive by his diabolical mother. Or that his twin brother Victor -- who until a few months ago was also presumed to be the real Todd Manning -- is not dead, but rather is secretly being held hostage by an equally diabolical Allison Perkins.

But to the millions of devoted One Life to Live fans, the preposterous plot-twists and over-the-top acting are part of our identities. A part that ended abruptly in January after a 44-year run on ABC. For anyone who's fallen in love with the heroine of a two-hour movie or reread a favorite novel for the fourth time, try to imagine the bond created by watching a show five days a week, every single week, for 20, 30 or even 40 years.

You probably thought only your 90-year-old granny still watched soap operas, right?

In 2011, 7.5 million people watched soaps in the U.S., a fraction of the glory years, but still an enviable following as network ratings decline across the board. To give you some perspective that's roughly the amount The Oprah Winfrey Show averaged in its own heyday.

Good riddance, you say. Farewell to predictable dialogue and cheesy love scenes. So long to Friday cliffhangers and histrionic daytime divas. Soap operas have had their 15 minutes of fame and should skulk away into the shadows like Vaudeville and silent film and Lindsay Lohan.

And while the most reasonable thing would be to set my DVR to something else and get on with my now dystopic TV-watching life, I find that I can't simply walk away.

Like countless other fans I took my post-traumatic-stress to Facebook, seeking out scarred viewers like myself. And I found them. Hundreds of thousands of fans swarming together online, seeking solace and preparing for battle.

You see, a war is on to bring soaps back from the dead. Fans are mobilizing to convince ABC to return the creative rights of One Life to Live and All My Children to creator Agnes Nixon so that they may live on somewhere else. I suppose it's apropos irony that the soaps themselves are now being held captive, because despite fans' pleas, despite other networks and production houses attempting to purchase the programs, for now our beloved Pine Valley and Llanview families are being held hostage, permanently.

ABC says it simply wants out of the soap business. In 2011, All My Children and One Life to Live were cancelled and General Hospital is expected to disappear later this year. Also this month, Disney (ABC's parent company) will phase out SOAPNet, the only niche cable channel for soaps. The network claims talk-shows, reality-TV, and self-help programming are the future and scripted shows a dying breed.

And while the past decade has seen soaps giving up the ghost across all major networks, One Life to Live's cancellation was for some reason different, a deal-breaker. Fans are saying, enough is enough. It's the first time a soap's cancellation has been met by not only sorrow and frustration, but downright defiance too. Fans have essentially refused to accept the network's decision, vowing to bring the show back if it takes months or even years.

Because fans argue that soaps aren't dying -- they're being murdered. ABC admits to having jumped on the reality-TV bandwagon because it's cheaper to produce, not because fans have abandoned scripted shows. And unlike ABC's primetime dramas Desperate Housewives or Revenge, its daytime dramas are rarely cross-advertised to prospective audiences. Fans also point to archaic ratings systems that don't accurately reflect contemporary viewing methods such as DVR and watching online, a much higher percentage for shows aired during the day while most viewers work.

When news of the cancellations hit last April soap fans sprang to action. Dozens of Facebook groups sprouted overnight, launching letter-writing and Twitter campaigns, barraging ABC and its sponsors with phone calls, appealing to celebrities for support, and urging fellow fans to boycott ABC's replacement shows and, for many, the network itself entirely. For some that meant switching their longtime local news station. Others gave up Dancing with the Stars after following it religiously since season one.

There are currently 100 groups with 150,000 active members, a significant number considering purportedly only five percent of fans seek out soap-related info on social media sites.

A key campaign is founding a new cable soap channel, an agnostic all-sudz station that would be a safe haven for all soaps, new and old, regardless of network affiliation. Fans have collected thousands of signatures, all willing to pay a monthly fee for the new channel.

Activists have already made good on a promise to boycott One Life to Live's replacement, The Revolution. So far the ratings speak for themselves. The Revolution is down nearly 50 percent from One Life to Live and rumored to be on the chopping block after only two months. Not surprisingly, last week Katie Couric publicly asked ABC not to debut her upcoming talk-show in General Hospital's timeslot, fearing poor lead-in ratings from The Revolution and a boycott from angry soap fans.

And since no conversation about soap operas would be complete without the obligatory surprise plot-twist, here goes: The biggest resistance isn't coming from the networks; it's coming from the public, legions of hard-core soap haters who are just as thrilled to see soaps die a swift, decisive death, as the fans are to revive them.

It's a strange phenomenon, considering fans of many genres have a proud history of rallying to save programs, from cult icon Star Trek to the ever-controversial animated hit Family Guy. And while non-fans might not care whether they succeed, you rarely find people hoping they fail or, worse yet, laughing at them for even trying.

Guess what? We fans know soap operas are cheesy. It's not some big secret. I spend half my time laughing at the show and the other half crying with the storylines. We love it because of the drama, the absurdity, and the tacky nuance that are tropes of this genre.

So like it or not, we fans will continue waging our war on two fronts: battling the dated stereotype that says "soap opera-activist" is an oxymoron and fighting to resurrect the deceased shows we still love (cheesy or not).

After all, if there's one lesson we've learned from decades of watching, when it comes to a soap opera, nothing is ever really dead.

If you want to help, visit www.savethesoapgenre.com, a newly launched website offering fans daily campaign tasks and links to Facebook groups.

Madonna/deadmau5 Feud: MDNA Producer Weighs In

'She has this dry sense of humor, which sometimes makes her say or do things that are a little bit shocking,' Martin Solveig tells MTV News of Madge.

Earlier this week, Madonna and EDM star deadmau5 were in a war of words after a comment the Queen of Pop made at Miami's Ultra Music Festival.

For those who haven't been following along at home, when Madonna took the stage to introduce Avicii, she asked the room, "How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?" Molly is another term for the illegal drug MDMA (ecstasy). That reference angered 'mau5, who took to his Facebook to call out Madonna for seemingly linking dance music and drug use, a persistent stereotype.

Eventually, the two settled the argument when Madonna took to Twitter, explaining that she was actually referring to the song "Have You Seen Molly" by Cedric Gervais, not the drug. deadmau5 seemed fine with her clarification, and all was cool between the once-beefing twosome.

When MTV News caught up with one of Madge's MDNA producers, fellow EDM DJ Martin Solveig, he weighed in on the short-lived, yet headline-making, tiff.

"She's a lot more ironical than a lot of people think, and ... she has this dry sense of humor, which sometimes makes her say or do things that are a little bit shocking, which is also the reason why everyone loves her," he said of Madge.

Solveig also showed support to 'mau5 (real name Joel Zimmerman).

"Joel probably read the whole thing a bit more first-degree and was a little bit angry, and there's nothing wrong with that," he continued. "And about him saying the things that he wants to say, I mean, I'm totally with him on that. No one here is promoting drug use, and maybe it was important to say this. I know Madonna enough to know that she is, like, completely at the opposite of supporting drug use, but it's a little bit of a chitchat."

What did you make of the Madonna/'mau5 feud? Let us know in the comments!

A group of students were taking a picture in Costa Rica when an upside down Sloth crept into the shot and stayed there, giving the picture a hilarious photobomb. [NY Daily News] More »

HBT: Vizquel, 44, snags Blue Jays' roster spot

Jamie Moyer is still fighting for a spot on the Rockies? pitching staff, but the other elderly gentleman in spring training, 44-year-old Omar Vizquel, has secured a place on the Blue Jays? bench for Opening Day.

Toronto made it official today and also optioned his utility man competition, Mike McCoy, to Triple-A.

Vizquel no longer has the range to play shortstop regularly and hit just .251 with a .287 on-base percentage and .305 slugging percentage in 58 games for the White Sox last season, but obviously the Blue Jays aren?t keeping him solely for his on-field production at this point.

He signed a minor-league deal in January and this will be his 24th season in the majors.

The clock's run out, time's up over, bloah!-Lose Yourself, Eminem

The Art of Rapping

Rapping is defined as "spoken or chanted rhyming lyrics". The art form can be broken down into different components, as in the book How to Rap where it is separated into ?content?, ?flow? (rhythm and rhyme), and ?delivery?.Rapping is distinct from spoken word poetry in that it is performed in time to a beat

The history of flows Old School flows were relatively basic and used only few syllables per bar, simple rhythmic patterns, and basic rhyming techniques and rhyme schemes. Melle Mel is cited as an Old School MC who epitomizes the Old School flow ? Kool Moe Dee says, ?from 1970 to 1978 we rhymed one way [then] Melle Mel, in 1978, gave us the new cadence we would use from 1978 to 1986... he?s the first emcee to explode in a new rhyme cadence, and change the way every emcee rhymed forever. Rakim, Biggie, and Eminem have flipped the flow, but Melle Mel?s downbeat on the two, four, kick to snare cadence is still the rhyme foundation all emcees are building on".

Artists and critics often credit Rakim with creating the overall shift from the more simplistic Old School flows to more complex flows near the beginning of Hip Hop?s new school ? Kool Moe Dee says, ?any emcee that came after 1986 had to study Rakim just to know what to be able to do... Rakim, in 1986, gave us flow and that was the rhyme style from 1986 to 1994... from that point on, anybody emceeing was forced to focus on their flow?. Kool Moe Dee explains that before Rakim, the term ?flow? wasn?t widely used ? ?Rakim is basically the inventor of flow. We were not even using the word flow until Rakim came along. It was called rhyming, it was called cadence, but it wasn?t called flow. Rakim created flow!? He adds that while Rakim upgraded and popularized the focus on flow, ?he didn?t invent the word?.

Kool Moe Dee states that Biggie introduced a newer flow which ?dominated from 1994 to 2002?, and also says that Method Man was ?one of the emcees from the early to mid-?90s that ushered in the era of flow... Rakim invented it, Big Daddy Kane, KRS-One, and Kool G Rap expanded it, but Biggie and Method Man made flow the single most important aspect of an emcee?s game?.He also cites Craig Mack as an artist who contributed to developing flow in the ?90s.

Music scholar Adam Krims says, ?the flow of MCs is one of the profoundest changes that separates out new-sounding from older-sounding music... it is widely recognized and remarked that rhythmic styles of many commercially successful MCs since roughly the beginning of the 1990s have progressively become faster and more ?complex??. He cites ?members of the Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, AZ, Big Pun, and Ras Kass, just to name a few? as artists who exemplify this progression.

Kool Moe Dee adds, ?in 2002 Eminem created the song that got the first Oscar in Hip-Hop history... and I would have to say that his flow is the most dominant right now (2003)?.

There are many styles of flows listed on the list below and description of flow is on there as well

  1. ?The Chant?- It's a type of flow to pump up the crowd and audience(used )by Lil Jon and Project Pat)
  2. ?The Syncopated Bounce?, Rhythmic Based, Quick and Aggressive flow (used by Twista and Bone Thugs N Harmony)
  3. ?Straight Forward?, Lyric-based flow, focuses more on imagery and similes (used by Scarface, 2Pac, Melle Mel, KRS-One circa Boogie Down Productions era, Too Short, Jay-Z, Ice Cube, and Snoop Dogg)
  4. ?The Rubik?s Cube?, A flow involving complex rhymes, somewhat rhythmic and has complex rhyme schemes (used by Nas, Black Thought of The Roots, Common, Kurupt, and Lauryn Hill)
  5. ?2-5-Flow?, Flow with a quick simple rhyme scheme but it goes aggressive from there by the rapper's tone of voice(a pun of Kenya's calling code "+254", used by Camp Mulla)

Alternatively, the list of flows are in three different categories

  1. "rhythmic style" style based on timing and going along with the beat of the rap(used by Too Short, Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, and the Beastie Boys)
  2. ?Percussion-Effusive style? an aggressive version of rhythmic style (used by B-Real of Cypress Hill)
  3. ?Speech-Effusive style?, categories based on rhymes (used by Big Pun)

DO-ABLE FITNESS: Health-Fitness-Beauty for Body-Mind-Spirit. We ...

Hello everyone,

It is great to connect with you again, and I hope you all are doing well.? Thanks again for all the emails you have sent me and sharing how my blogs have encouraged and helped you.? I am deeply touched by your kind and caring words.? I believe we heal as we help others.? We fill a void in our lives when we seek to fill a void in others? hearts.

I am motivated to share my thoughts and feelings about bullying and hatred.? It seems to be in the news a lot lately.? I have always been a defender of those who are bullied, a protector of those who are victimized, a supporter of those who are oppressed, an encourager of those who are demoralized, a source of empowerment for those who are weak.? Sadly, there will always be hateful and selfish people in life.? Unfortunately, a world without sadness and evil may never exist.? Despite this depressing truth, we can make a difference.? Let?s reject evil and embrace love.? Each of us can be instruments of goodwill, making a positive impact and influence in this world, and it starts with those closest to us.

Lest I sound idealistic and Pollyannaish, I believe we need more love in the world.? If each of us has more love in our heart, mind and soul, life would be so much more fulfilling, meaningful and beautiful.? A lifestyle of loving our fellow human beings can enhance our relationships, health and quality of life.? Love does not mean ignoring evil, allowing abuse, rejecting healthy boundaries or letting someone do whatever he or she wants ?that might be a topic for a future blog.

It bothers, angers and saddens me when I see someone treated disrespectfully and hatefully.? None of us deserves to be treated like dirt or garbage.? We are all precious, important, and worthy of dignity.? If we have differing opinions with someone, we can agree to disagree agreeably.? Not seeing eye to eye with someone on whatever issue is not an excuse, reason or justification to hurt or hate someone.? Martin Luther King, Jr. said, ?Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.? Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.?? Let?s love sparingly, deeply and sincerely, because when we do this, we start to truly live!

Bullying, racism, sexism, and other forms of hatred reflect fears, insecurities, hurts and/or lack of knowledge.? Perhaps, we were injured by someone, so we believe the stereotypes about him or her.? Perhaps, we lack confidence or have a bad self-image, so we demean or diminish someone?s worth to feel a false sense of security.? Perhaps, we want to protect ourselves and our loved ones from dangers, but we demonize and vilify an entire group of people.? Perhaps, we do not want to deal with the root problems of an issue, so we blame someone else and use him or her as a scapegoat.? Perhaps, we do not know much about someone and we de-humanize him or her.

To heal from the ways we tend to embrace, embody and emit hatred, I encourage all of us to do some self-introspection.? I pray we purge ourselves from those fears, insecurities, hurts and ignorance, so we are free to love.? Let?s fill our hearts, minds and souls with genuine love for others.? Let?s treat others the ways we want to be treated.? Black, white, brown, red, yellow or any permutations of these skin colors; poor or rich or anywhere in between; young or old or anywhere in between; educated or unschooled or anywhere in between, gay or straight or anywhere in between, fit or obese or anywhere in between, beautiful or homely or anywhere in between (by societal standards), powerful or unassuming or anywhere in between?let?s respect each other, let?s love each other!? Let?s enjoy our diversity and respect our differences.? Remember, we can agree to disagree, but let?s do that agreeably.

For those of you who have been bullied, slighted, discriminated, injured or violated by someone who was controlled by hate, I am sorry.? My heart, prayers and LOVE go out to you!? You are not alone!? Together, we can heal, be restored and become tools for compassion.? No matter how wealthy we are, no matter how attractive we are, no matter how erudite we are, no matter how influential we are, no matter how talented we are, no matter how strong we are, no matter famous we are, no matter how generous and philanthropic we are?it is all rubbish if love and humility does not reign supremely in our hearts.? Mother Theresa said, ?It is not how much we do, but how much love we put in the doing. ?It is not how much we give, but how much love we put in the giving.?

Love never fails!?

MADISON An independent commission of scientific leaders from 13 countries today released a detailed set of recommendations to policymakers on how to achieve food security in the face of climate change.

In their report, the Commission on Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change proposes specific policy responses to the global challenge of feeding a world confronted by climate change, population growth, poverty, food price spikes and degraded ecosystems. The report highlights specific opportunities under the mandates of the Rio+20 Earth Summit, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Group of 20 (G20) nations.

"Food insecurity and climate change are already inhibiting human well-being and economic growth throughout the world and these problems are poised to accelerate," said Sir John Beddington, chair of the commission. "Decisive policy action is required if we are to preserve the planet's capacity to produce adequate food in the future."

The report was released today at the Planet Under Pressure conference where scientists from around the world are honing solutions for global sustainability challenges targeted to the Rio Summit to be held June 20-22 in Brazil.

The commission was created in 2011 and charged with identifying the best research-based approaches toward global food security in the face of climate change. The new report, available at http://bit.ly/ClimateFoodCommissionFinal, outlines seven recommendations they hope to see implemented concurrently by a constellation of governments, international institutions, investors, agricultural producers, consumers, food companies and researchers. They call for changes in policy, finance, agriculture, development aid, diet choices, and food waste as well as revitalized investment in the knowledge systems to support these changes.

"It's past time to realize that farms of every size all over the world are fundamental to providing for human nutritional demands and economic well-being, but they also face critical choices with significant implications for the way we manage the planet for long-term sufficiency," says U.S. Commissioner Molly Jahn, a professor at the University of WisconsinMadison.

Further, changes in agricultural practices have the potential to deliver benefits for both adaptation and mitigation of climate change. For example, in China, nearly 400 kilograms of chemical fertilizer are used on every hectare of farmland and, in Mexico, agriculture accounts for 77 percent of domestic water use, in part due to substantial subsidies for water and electricity used for irrigation.

Such practices offer both challenges and opportunities to refocus policies and budgets, say Jahn and the other commissioners, and they have urged the UNFCCC to establish a work program that addresses these issues together under the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice.

In addition to tackling agriculture, the commission's recommendations explicitly recognize the "demand side" of food insecurity, calling for policies and programs to support healthy and sustainable eating as well as those explicitly designed to empower vulnerable populations.

In particular, they underscore the need for improved data and decision support for land managers and policy makers. "The elements of the food system soil, water, climate, energy, people are intimately connected and it is critical that we understand how they work together as a system, and get that information into the hands of those who need it most," Jahn says.

The commission's report presents a stark picture of the challenges ahead and calls for decisive action on a global scale to ensure a "safe operating space" [link http://bit.ly/SafeSpaceClimateFood] for current and future generations.

"Many public and private sector leaders are already taking steps to overcome technical, social, financial and political barriers to a sustainable food system," says Bruce Campbell, director of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security, which convened the commission in February 2011. "The commission's work spells out who needs to do what to take these early efforts to the next level."

The commission is financially supported by the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) and the Global Donor Platform for Rural Development. The commission brings together senior natural and social scientists working in agriculture, climate, food and nutrition, economics, and natural resources from Australia, Brazil, Bangladesh, China, Ethiopia, France, Kenya, India, Mexico, South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States and Vietnam. Additional materials can be found at http://ccafs.cgiar.org/commission.

Commission Recommendations:

1. Integrate food security and sustainable agriculture into global and national policies

2. Significantly raise the level of global investment in sustainable agriculture and food systems in the next decade

3. Sustainably intensify agricultural production while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other negative environmental impacts of agriculture

4. Target populations and sectors that are most vulnerable to climate change and food insecurity

5. Reshape food access and consumption patterns to ensure basic nutritional needs are met and to foster healthy and sustainable eating habits worldwide

6. Reduce loss and waste in food systems, particularly from infrastructure, farming practices, processing, distribution and household habits

7. Create comprehensive, shared, integrated information systems that encompass human and ecological dimensions

>> didn't win last night? me neither. but don't despair. that means the mega millions jackpot just keeps growing. setting up friday's drawing to be the biggest ever, a staggering $500,000,000. lottery players can be forgiven for doing a little dreaming.

>> a nice place on the beach.

>>> a lifetime supply of oreos.

>> at northwestern memorial, dr. david zeke prepared me for the big win.

>> when you find out you win, quite frequently, the blood pressure drops. and i faint.

>> and you faint, right.

>> that's how the last nbc employee felt when she won $266 million.

>> i felt like my legs were going to fall out from beneath me. she now runs her own charitable organization , and when richard won his own money, he, too, donated millions to charity. that's what all of the people i spoke to today said they would do, too.
