Clinton urges world democracies to stand together (AP)

BUDAPEST, Hungary ? Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called Thursday for solidarity with pro-democracy activists in Belarus as the wave of protest that has spread through the Arab world extends to Europe's last autocratic stronghold.

On the first leg of a trip taking her to two European nations that democratized in the world's last great series of liberal upheavals, when the Iron Curtain came down in 1989, Clinton spoke emphatically for democracies to stand together and do what they can to expand their club.

She said emerging democracies from Europe to Latin America to Asia can help Egypt, Tunisia and other Arab countries in transition. And all should "show solidarity with those in the streets of Belarus, in Libya and around the world," she added.

The secretary spoke at the inauguration of a human rights institute in Budapest honoring the late Congressman Tom Lantos of California. Clinton's predecessor as America's top diplomat, Condoleezza Rice, also attended the ceremony for the Lantos Institute, named after the Hungarian-born Holocaust survivor who died in 2008.

In a wide-ranging speech, Clinton expressed veiled concerns about China, expressly rejecting the creed of those countries "trumpeting national economic growth over freedom and human rights." But she avoided chastising the host Hungarian government over a new media law or the independence of its judiciary, which have been criticized in Europe.

Clinton is expected to elaborate on the same themes when she arrives later Thursday for the two-day "Community of Democracies" gathering in Vilnius, Lithuania. She will also visit Spain before returning to Washington on Saturday.

"As we struggle to help new democracies emerge, we cannot let any democracy anywhere backslide," Clinton said. "The stakes are too high."

Senior administration officials traveling with Clinton highlighted Belarus as a nation of growing concern. They noted that repression has increased in the country, and said the U.S. and European governments were adopting a two-pronged approach to try to spur change. Travel bans, asset freezes and other sanctions are being directed at officials culpable in human rights abuses, while funds are being directed to promote economic development and travel opportunities for private Belarusian citizens and civil society members.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of Clinton's trip to Vilnius, near Lithuania's border with Belarus. Life inside President Alexander Lukashenko's country will probably be a major topic of discussion there.

On Wednesday, Belarusian police violently dispersed the latest peaceful rally by thousands of people protesting Lukashenko's regime and the country's worst financial crisis since the fall of the Soviet Union two decades ago.

The Vesna rights advocacy group said police arrested more than 100 and beat many with truncheons. It is the latest crackdown from the government of Lukashenko, who has ruled the nation of 10 million people with an iron hand for nearly 17 years, earning the nickname of "Europe's last dictator."

In Budapest, where the focus was on Lantos' legacy, officials and family members from Hungary and the United States offered their tributes.

Clinton noted how the Democrat founded Congress' human rights caucus in 1983, while Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Lantos represented the love of freedom shared by the U.S. and his country. Orban, however, also used the event to also warn about the far-reaching effects of economic turmoil.

"Indebtedness, whether that of households or entire countries, clearly limits freedoms," Orban said. He borrowed the words of President John Adams, who said there are two ways to conquer and enslave a nation ? by the sword and by debt.

Japanese production rises 5.7% in May (AFP)

TOKYO (AFP) ? Japan's industrial production jumped 5.7 percent in May from the previous month, reflecting a steady recovery in earthquake-hit supply chains following the March 11 quake and tsunami.

The level beat market expectations of a 5.5-percent increase and followed a revised 1.6-percent monthly rise in April.

Rising production of automobiles boosted the data, the industry ministry said in a statement.

"Industrial production is on a recovery trend after the Great East Japan Earthquake," the ministry said, referring to the March tremor that caused a tsunami that also crippled a nuclear power plant.

The ministry said prospects for Japanese output were brightening -- a more optimistic assessment than a month ago, when it said output was "expected to recover gradually".

The ministry expected continued production increases, forecasting a 5.3 percent rise for June and 0.5 percent in July.

Meanwhile, shipments in May jumped 5.3 percent, rising for the first time in three months. Inventories rose 5.1 percent, marking a second straight monthly increase.

India Improves on Human Trafficking: U.S.

The U.S. Department of State on Monday upgraded India on the issue of human trafficking, saying the country was making ?significant efforts? to deal with the crime.

In its annual report on trafficking this year, the U.S. moved India up one spot to ?Tier 2,? the second of four possible placements.

Since 2004, India had been on the ?Tier 2 Watch List,? a category that was created that year for countries with a large-scale human trafficking problem and that are seen as not doing enough year-to-year to combat it. Previously there were only three possible rankings.

The report praised India for setting up 87 local anti-trafficking units, for increasing the numbers of convictions of people involved in human trafficking for forced labor, and for ratifying a relevant United Nations protocol last month.

However, it also said the government needs to do a lot more. ?Corrupt law enforcement officers reportedly continued to facilitate the movement of sex trafficking victims and protected suspected traffickers and brothel keepers from the law,? said the report. ?Some police continued to tip-off locations of sex and labor trafficking to impede rescue efforts.?

The State Department said India should encourage its states to set up special courts dedicated to prosecuting trafficking cases, as Mumbai has done. It also called on India to improve its? protection for victims who testify against traffickers and to increase funding available to those trying to build a new life after being rescued.

The report also called for more stringent punishments on crimes related to human trafficking. It noted that in some cases local laws on bonded labor and child labor prescribe maximum sentences of just three years. The report also said that trafficking cases are frequently tried in lower courts where those convicted can be sentenced to no more than three years, even when the law allows for a greater maximum sentence than that. The State Department praised a Tamil Nadu court that last year sentenced three convicted bonded labor traffickers to five years in prison.

A spokesman for India?s home ministry said it does not comment on reports on India.

Earlier this month, a poll of the perceptions of a little over 200 experts on gender equity issues rated India the fourth most dangerous country in the world, in large part due to issues of human trafficking, often of women and girls, and female feticide.

But although sex trafficking is also a serious issue, the U.S. says forced labor is India?s largest trafficking problem, and that the majority of this is internal.

?The forced labor of millions of its citizens constitutes India?s largest trafficking problem,? said the 2011 report. ?Men, women, and children in debt bondage are forced to work in industries such as brick kilns, rice mills, agriculture, and embroidery factories.?

The report also criticizes India?s Maoist rebels, known as Naxals. ?Maoist armed groups known as the Naxalites forcibly recruited children into their ranks,? said the report.

Viralheat, the social media measurement tool that allows content producers to monitor consumer-generated content on the Web in realtime, announced today that it has closed a $4.25 million series A round of funding. The round was led by the venture firm Mayfield Fund and adds to the $75K of seed capital Viralheat raised back in December 2009. The startup plans to use this new infusion of capital to expand its engineering team, create new products and services for consumer analytics and engagement, and accelerate customer acquisition and revenue growth. As it is, Viralheat faces plenty of competition in the social media analytics and tracking space from Radian6, Visible Measures, Omgili, ScoutLabs, and Omniture to name a few, but the top factor that distinguishes Viralheat from other startups is its affordability. Is Marriage Still Relevant? Divorce, Relationships, and Sex

Is Marriage still relevant? Less and less people think so?including Christians. We have become a culture of divorce, free sex, and relationships resting on pleasure. Something has got to change. Should marriage be abandoned? Or should it be restored and rebuilt? Our guest author, Jeffrey Paul Colmen, presents a questioning of marriage. So, perhaps it?s not the nicest thing to say, but?I?m not sure I believe in marriage anymore.

I mean, think about it:?For the past 60 years, 50% of marriages have ended in divorce.

So what?s the difference between that?(divorce)?and two people dating, then breaking up?

Well, for one,?If you?re married, I hear you get guilt-free sex.?But then, if you?re married.?And get divorced ? it?s a little more messy?than if you were just dating and then broke up.?I mean, there?s no guarantee it?ll be more or less emotionally painful.?But if you get divorced, it doesn?t just mess the two ex-partners up,
It messes up the children,?And the couple?s relationships with friends,?And oftentimes, job performance and church attendance drop significantly.

And too often, due in part to a divorce, women and children are thrown into poverty. Besides, one might argue, getting marriage can introduce all this (perhaps undue) pressure! I mean, it?s a hell of a commitment to say, ?I love you ?til death do us part [or, if you?re Mormon, forever].? That sort of long-term commitment takes, I guess, a lot of love and a lot of trust and a lot of, well, commitment. It?s a risk.?But it no doubt has its rewards.

Still, I keep thinking, if only the pressure weren?t there ? I mean, people lose A LOT of sleep worrying about this commitment, whether they?ll be able to keep it, or whether they?ll be able to keep on keeping it, or if their spouse will keep on trusting the other to keep it ? because you never know how life will go. And there are a lot of pretty, smart, competent, kind people out there.

So how can you say, ?There?s just ONE??

Anyways, aren?t we supposed to love EVERYBODY??How are we supposed to do that, if we?ve got to expend so much energy on loving just this one person extra-specially, and not worrying about it, or worrying that the other person?s worrying about it, or worrying that the continued commitment will make you lame or boring or stale or less you.?At the very least, we can all agree, it sounds like hard work.?And if marriage is so worth it, and already such hard work,?I would think it?d be nice if there were a little less social pressure.?A little less pressure on those who are thinking they at least right now (even though they?re getting up in years) would prefer for whatever reason not to get married.

A little less pressure on those already married thinking they might get a divorce.
A little less pressure on those considering getting married that they keep it forever. Or else!
A little less pressure on those wanting to get married, but perhaps wanting a partnership that looks a little bit maybe somewhat ?unorthodox.? (Again, assuming marriages are tough, intimate, totally-worth-it-but-so-engaging sorts of things, I would think it better if we left each couple to figure out what their marriage will look like for them than pressure them to make it look like ours, especially if ours isn?t doing so hot as it is.)

And, in light of that, I think it?d be in order to put a little less pressure on those maybe thinking about marriage but also thinking they might like getting a little intimate first with somebody special without yet worrying about the bonds and ties of the life-long commitment we commonly call marriage.?I mean, I?d be the first to admit, I LOVE weddings. They?re some of the happiest occasions life has to offer, and not just for the couple newly wed.?And I?m not saying I like divorce, nor that I like it when couples break commitments of any kind.?It?s sad, and painful, and can mess you up forever.?But it doesn?t have to.?And all I?m saying is, if we eased up the pressure a little bit, the marriages that do last, might last a little longer, and be a little happier.

And the marriages that don?t last??Well, it?s my hope the two ex-partners, rather than feel heartbroken, anxious, lonely AND socially condemned, they?d feel a little more loved. Because hey! No pressure, dude (or dudette). God?s got you covered.?He is, after all, Love. And Love never fails.

Geoffrey R. Stone: Marriage Equality and the Catholic Bishops

New York State has taken an important step forward in our nation's never-ending quest to remake ourselves as a more decent, more inclusive, more just and more moral society. Looking back from the future, our grandchildren will surely see the legal recognition of same-sex marriage as an inspiring chapter in America's story, a story in which we have progressively abolished slavery, ended state-sponsored racial segregation, prohibited laws against interracial marriage, protected equal rights for women, promoted religious diversity and tolerance and outlawed discrimination on the basis of disability. There is no doubt that, in the long run, the United States will follow the lead of New York State. The challenge, though, is to make the long run short.

The most vehement opponent of marriage equality in New York was the Catholic Church. Indeed, in the heat of the debate in the state legislature, the New York State Catholic Conference issued a ringing proclamation: "The Bishops of New York State oppose in the strongest possible terms any attempt to redefine the sacred institution of marriage. Marriage has always been, is now, and always will be the union of one man and one woman. Government does not have the authority to change this most basic of truths."

That the leaders of the Catholic Church take this position is certainly their right, but it is a sorry testament to their understanding of their Church's own history in this nation. If anything, one would expect those leaders to be leaders in the fight against bigotry and intolerance, rather than voices in support of prejudice and discrimination. After all, as the historian Arthur Schlesinger, Sr. once observed, prejudice against Catholics has been one of "the deepest bias[es] in the history of the American people."

Sadly, this was so from the very beginning. In the mid-seventeenth century, both the Colony of Virginia and Massachusetts Bay Colony enacted laws prohibiting Catholic settlers. In the 1830s, prominent Protestant leaders attacked the Catholic Church as an enemy of republican values, and in the 1840s the "nativist" movement was whipped into a frenzy of anti-Catholicism that led to mob violence, the burning of Catholic property, and the killing of Catholics. Anti-Catholicism reached a peak in the mid-nineteenth century when Protestant leaders became alarmed by the heavy influx of Catholic immigrants.

Rabid anti-Catholicism continued into the 1920s, when anti-Catholics fumed that Catholicism was incompatible with democracy. When Al Smith ran unsuccessfully for president in 1928 as the first Roman Catholic candidate, Protestant ministers warned that the nation's autonomy would be threatened if he were to be elected, because he would listen not to the American people, but to the pope.

Many Americans opposed Smith because they believed the Catholic Church was "unAmerican." In an influential manifesto, the Lutheran Dr. Clarence Reinhold Tappert warned about "the peculiar relation in which a faithful Catholic stands and the absolute allegiance he owes to a 'foreign sovereign' who 'claims' supremacy in secular affairs and who, time and again, has endeavored to put this claim into practical operation."

In 1949, Paul Blanshard wrote in his bestselling book, American Freedom and Catholic Power, that the Catholic Church was widely seen as an "undemocratic system of alien control" in which the lay were chained by the "rule of the clergy." Even today, when things have clearly changed for the better, only 45 percent of Americans have a positive view of the Catholic Church (as compared to 53 percent who have a positive view of same-sex marriage).

In light of that history, one would have hoped that the leaders of a religion that has been so vilified and discriminated against would have been able to take a step back and recognize similar bigotry and prejudice when it is directed at others. Instead, the bishops' proclamation does precisely what the critics of the Church have long condemned. According to the proclamation, marriage is a "sacred" institution -- that is, an institution set apart for veneration by God -- and government therefore "does not have the authority to change" it. In other words, in a self-governing society, the democratically-elected representatives of the people do "not have the authority" to change the law in a way that conflicts with the religious beliefs of the bishops. That is not a winning argument.

Ironically, it is not a winning argument even with Catholics, a substantial majority of whom reject the Church's position and support same-sex marriage. Indeed, whereas 53 percent of all Americans now support same-sex marriage, approximately 60 percent of Catholics now take that position. It is heart-warming and inspiring when the adherents of a religion -- any religion -- are more decent, more wise and more moral than the "leaders" of their religion. It's enough to give one faith in the future.

Syria activists meet, call for change to avert crisis (Reuters)

AMMAN (Reuters) ? Syrian activists called on Monday for sweeping political changes that could end 41 years of Assad family rule in a rare meeting in Damascus allowed by the authorities under pressure from a three-month popular uprising.

"The solution to this crisis has to address its root causes. This regime must be toppled and replaced with a democratic system," said leading Syrian writer Michel Kilo, who spent three years as a political prisoner.

The meeting at a Damascus hotel includes noted critics of President Bashar al-Assad who are respected in opposition circles, as well as some supporters of Assad.

Organizers said the gathering had approval from a senior aide to Assad, who has sent troops to crush protests across the country while promising dialogue in an effort to contain an uprising for political freedoms that has posed the gravest threat to his rule since he succeeded his father 11 years ago.

Other speakers in the conference, attended by 150 people in a Damascus hotel, adopted a softer tone but said demands of street protesters after decades of autocratic rule must be met.

Syrian writer Louay Hussein, who was also a political prisoner, said repression in the last four decades have undermined Syria as a whole while emphasizing that peaceful means must be found to meet popular demands.

Hussein said the meeting would try to explore "ending the state of dictatorship, and a peaceful and safe transition into a desired country, one of freedom, justice and equality."

Monther Khaddam, an academic from the coastal city of Latakia, said a wider national dialogue is needed but that intellectuals were "behind street demands until the end."

Organizers of Monday's conference described it as a platform for independent figures searching for a way out of the violence

Main opposition figures had said the meeting could give political cover to Assad, with human rights groups saying that security forces have killed over 1,300 civilians and imprisoned 12,000 since the uprising began in southern Syria.

Economist Aref Dalila, a major figure behind the gathering, pulled out at the last minute, saying that he did not want to participate in a conference that could be used by the authorities while mass killing and arrests continue.
