The women, whose spouses are deployed sailors, were honored during a group baby shower hosted by Operation Shower in partnership with the Travelers Championship and Birdies for the Brave on Thursday evening at the Historic Ship Nautilus and Submarine Force Museum in Groton, Conn. The sailors are assigned to Commander, Submarine Group Two boats located at the Naval Submarine Base New London.

AMMAN, Jordan?? Syrian forces stormed a town on the main road leading to Turkey on Sunday after troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad fought a night-time battle in Damascus with army defectors who had refused to shoot at a pro-democracy protest.
Six months into a popular uprising, Assad is under pressure from street protests and from Arab foreign ministers who told Syria on Sunday to work to end bloodshed "before it is too late."
The Arab League decided to send its secretary-general to Damascus to push for reforms, while the president of neighboring Turkey said he had lost confidence in Syria.
Residents of Khan Sheikhoun, on the main road 245 km (155 miles) north of Damascus, said two people had been killed in an army assault on their town. Two local activists, Tareq al-Nisr and Musaab Taha, were wounded, another activist said.
"It was an assassination attempt. The security police and shabbiha (militiamen) are beginning to use targeted assassinations and arresting people in larger numbers," said the activist, who gave his name as Abu Wael.
In Damascus, dozens of soldiers defected and fled into al-Ghouta, an area of farmland, after pro-Assad forces fired at a large crowd of demonstrators near the suburb of Harasta to prevent them from marching on the center, residents said.
"The army has been firing heavy machine guns throughout the night at al-Ghouta and they were being met with response from smaller rifles," a resident of Harasta told Reuters by phone.
A statement published on the Internet by the Free Officers, a group that says it represents defectors, said "large defections" occurred in Harasta and security forces and shabbiha loyal to Assad were chasing the defectors.
It was the first reported defection around the capital, where Assad's core forces are based.
Syrian authorities have repeatedly denied any army defections have been taking place. They have expelled independent media since the uprising against Assad, from Syria's minority Alawite sect, erupted in March.
Activists have been reporting increasing defections among the rank-and-file army, mostly drawn from Syria's Sunni majority but dominated by an Alawite officer core effectively under the command of Assad's brother Maher.

In the town of Hirak in the southern Hauran Plain, a crowd shouted, "Oppressor, your reign will finish. Prepare yourself for execution," according to a footage distributed by residents.
In the eastern town of Albu Kamal on the border with Iraq's Sunni heartland, which has been besieged by tanks for weeks after large protests, an activist said security police snipers fired at protesters who streamed out of a main mosque after nightly Ramadan prayers, injuring five people.
The United Nations says 2,200 people have been killed since Assad sent in tanks and troops to crush months of street demonstrations calling for an end to his family's 41-year rule.
Syrian authorities have blamed armed "terrorist groups" for the bloodshed across Syria and say 500 police and army have been killed.
The latest demonstrations in Damascus were triggered in part by an attack Saturday by Assad's forces on a popular cleric, Osama al-Rifai. He was treated with several stitches to his head after they stormed al-Rifai mosque complex in the Kfar Sousa district of the capital, home to the secret police headquarters, to prevent a protest from coming out of the mosque.
Protesters have been buoyed by increasing international condemnation of Assad's crackdown. President Abdullah Gul of Turkey, a former ally, said the situation had reached a point where changes would be too little too late, Turkish state-run news agency Anatolian reported.
Gul told Anatolian in an interview: "We are really very sad. Incidents are said to be 'finished' and then another 17 people are dead. How many will it be today? Clearly we have reached a point where anything would be too little too late. We have lost our confidence."
In Cairo, the Arab League said in a statement after an extraordinary meeting that it was concerned "over the dangerous developments on the Syrian arena that had caused thousands of casualties" and "stresses the importance of ending bloodshed and to resort to reason before it is too late."
It was the first official Arab League meeting on Syria since the start of the uprising, inspired by revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt that sparked unrest across the Middle East and North Africa. The foreign ministers said Syria's stability was crucial for the Arab world and the whole region.
Assad's closest ally, Shi'ite Iran, with which he has been strengthening ties to the disquiet of Syria's Sunni majority, has said Damascus must listen to the "legitimate demands" of its people.
Iran warned NATO Sunday against any temptation to intervene in Syria, saying that rather than the defeating a regime it would be bogged down in a "quagmire" similar to Iraq or Afghanistan.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Mark Hurd may get his $100 million payday after all.
The former CEO of Hewlett-Packard Co. was negotiating a multiyear contract that size last year when an ethical scandal erupted and he resigned under pressure. The contract talks crumbled, but Hurd found a new home with his friend Larry Ellison at Oracle Corp. On Friday, Oracle disclosed that Hurd's compensation for the year came in slightly higher than even Ellison's.
Taken together, Hurd's severance package from HP and his hiring package at Oracle may put him well north of the amount he was originally seeking, a rich reward that demonstrates Hurd's strategic and symbolic value in Silicon Valley's rapidly transforming tech landscape.
The document Oracle submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission shows that Hurd got a pay package valued at $78.4 million for the company's latest fiscal year, which ended May 31. The package includes a large signing bonus, but most of it consists of stock options that he won't have immediate access to. That means Hurd may never see the full amount, or he may get far more, depending on fluctuations in Oracle's stock price.
Hurd received $12.2 million in severance pay upon leaving HP, and $30 million worth of stock that he got by exercising options that came with that package. The figures would have been even higher if Hurd hadn't surrendered some of his severance in a settlement with HP that allowed him to work at Oracle.
Ellison, one of the world's richest men, spared no expense in hiring Hurd as Oracle mounts a strong attack against HP in computer servers, an HP stronghold in which Oracle is a new entrant. Ellison himself is also richly paid.
Ellison padded his fortune with compensation valued at $77.6 million, a par-for-the-course payday for Ellison. He has been Oracle's CEO since he co-founded the company in 1977 and has been instrumental in building it into one of the world's biggest business software companies.
But Hurd's compensation was especially remarkable considering his compensation during his last full year at HP was valued at $24.2 million, according to calculations by The Associated Press.
Hurd and Ellison are tennis buddies whose alliance has aligned them on the right side of a lucrative trend: Corporations are spending on technology even as their spending on hiring has remained tepid.
Oracle's focus has always been on businesses, and its model has helped lift its stock price over the last year while HP's heavy consumer focus, especially in personal computers, has hurt its market value. In a sign of how seductive the business-centric approach is these days, last week HP announced plans to kill its fledgling tablet and smartphone business. It is also considering selling or spinning off its PC division.
In that fight, Hurd is a crucial ally for Ellison, and his value to the Redwood Shores, Calif.-based corporation was outlined in detail in Oracle's proxy filing Friday.
In the filing, Oracle's board of directors called Oracle's recent performance "outstanding" and noted that the company's stock rose more than 50 percent in the latest fiscal year. Oracle's database software and business applications have sold robustly despite the financial crisis.
Their satisfaction translated to bigger pay for top executives.
Ellison's salary was $1, he got a $13.3 million bonus, had $1.5 million in miscellaneous compensation that went mostly for home security, and got stock options worth $62.7 million. The value of the options will fluctuate based on Oracle's stock price.
Ellison owns nearly a quarter of Oracle's outstanding shares, which makes up the bulk of his fortune. The stock closed Friday at $26.65, which made Ellison's 1.1 billion shares worth roughly $30 billion.
The pay package was an increase from last year, when Ellison received compensation valued at about $70 million, according to calculations by the AP.
Hurd received a salary of $698,106, bonus pay of $9.3 million, miscellaneous compensation of just over $16,000, and options worth $68.3 million on the day they were granted.
Hurd's severance from HP was raised eyebrows considering the circumstances of his departure.
A former HP contractor had accused him of sexual harassment. The company's board said it found no evidence of harassment, but voted unanimously to seek his resignation anyway over faulty expense reports. Hurd insists that he didn't prepare his own expenses and that he wasn't responsible for any oversights on them.
In a statement announcing the resignation, Hurd said obliquely that there were "instances in which I did not live up to the standards and principles of trust, respect and integrity that I have espoused at HP and which have guided me throughout my career." He said he believed it would be difficult for him to continue as an effective leader at HP.
Ellison sharply criticized HP's decision, and Hurd's hiring was a strategic as well as a symbolic move, illustrating Oracle's new direction.
The AP's formula is designed to isolate the value the company's board placed on the executive's total compensation package during the last fiscal year. It includes salary, bonus, performance-related bonuses, perks, above-market returns on deferred compensation and the estimated value of stock options and awards granted during the year.
The calculations don't include changes in the present value of pension benefits, and they sometimes differ from the totals companies list in the summary compensation table of proxy statements filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, which reflect the size of the accounting charge taken for the executive's compensation in the previous fiscal year.

LYNDON, Kan. (AP) ? A jury convicted a Kansas man of capital murder on Thursday in the shooting deaths of his estranged wife, their two teenage daughters and his wife's grandmother ? crimes his attorneys said he committed after his spouse took a lesbian lover and filed for divorce.
Attorneys for James Kraig Kahler had argued that his mental health deteriorated and he finally snapped because of his pending divorce and his wife's sexual relationship with another woman whom she met when they lived in Texas. But prosecutors painted a picture of man who coldly picked off his victims, one by one, at the home of his wife's grandmother, near Burlingame, a small town 20 miles south of Topeka, during the weekend after Thanksgiving 2009.
The Osage County jury needed only about two hours to reach a verdict. Kahler, dressed in a dark suit, stood calmly and showed no outward emotion as the bailiff announced the verdict. His parents, seated in the front row, also appeared calm.
Jurors will next hear additional evidence and consider whether to recommend a death sentence, weighing issues such as the cruelty involved in the shootings against Kahler's previous lack of a criminal record and his mental state at the time of the crimes.
Kahler, who goes by his middle name, Kraig, was convicted of four counts of first-degree murder as well as a single count of capital murder ? a charge that prosecutors could bring because Kansas law says multiple murders can qualify a defendant for the death penalty if they're part of "the same transaction" or "a common scheme." Kahler also was convicted of one count of aggravated burglary, with prosecutors contending he entered the grandmother's home without permission.
Kahler, 48, had directed city utility departments in Weatherford, Texas, and Columbia, Mo., but moved back to Kansas just weeks before the shootings to live with his parents. Witnesses testified that he lost the Missouri job after he became obsessed with keeping his marriage alive and that he believed his daughters had sided with his wife.
The victims were his wife, 44-year-old Karen Kahler; her grandmother, Dorothy Wight, 89; and the Kahlers' daughters, Emily, 18, and Lauren, 16.
Law enforcement officers and emergency medical personnel said that before dying, Wight and Lauren Kahler identified Kraig Kahler as the gunman. The Kahlers' son Sean, now 12, also testified that he saw his father shoot his mother before he escaped the scene without physical injury.
In closing arguments earlier Thursday, Assistant Attorney General Amy Hanley said Kahler was angry and gunned down his family members because he believed he could fix his problems by getting rid of those he felt were responsible.
"The defendant had a plan," Hanley told jurors. "In his mind he had a problem to eliminate, and he knew how to do it."
Defense attorney Thomas Haney said Kahler was mentally "broken" because of his wife's lesbian affair and her pursuit of a divorce.
"What happens when someone who's rigid is put under too much pressure?" Haney said, breaking a pencil in front of jurors. "They snap."
Kahler was a city utilities director in Weatherford, Texas, and Columbia, Mo., but moved back to Kansas shortly before the shootings to live with his parents outside Topeka.
According to trial testimony, his wife began having a sexual relationship with the other woman in Texas in 2008, before Kahler took the job in Missouri. His wife filed for divorce in January 2009, and witnesses said Kahler became so obsessed with his failing marriage that his work suffered and he lost his job.
Partners in a Kansas City, Mo., psychiatric office testified on opposite sides of the case about Kahler's mental health. One said Kahler was so severely depressed that he wasn't thinking rationally and couldn't control his behavior at the time of the killings. The other said Kahler's depression wasn't serious enough to prevent him from forming the intent to kill or making conscious decisions about what he did.
Kansas law says a mentally ill defendant still is legally responsible for a crime, unless his illness or mental defect prevented him forming an intent to commit the crime and, in the case of capital or first-degree murder, acting with premeditation.

Therefore, one needs to identify a state to live in after retirement where his or her funds are not heavily taxed, so as to ensure that one?s retirement nest lasts him or her for a long while (and hopefully outlives them so as to transfer to one?s beneficiaries). Different states will however, have different taxation rates and rules. This makes some states friendlier for retirees than others. Below are 5 of the most expensive states for a retiree to live in:
1. Vermont
Vermont is one of the states that are most unfriendly for retired senior citizens. For a start, the state does not have any exemptions for retirement incomes. The only payout that receives some tax exemption is Railroad Retirement income. If the senior citizen receives any retirement distributions from outside the state, the funds are fully taxed. The income taxes for this state range between 3.55% and 8.95%. The state also charges a sales tax of 6% and depending on the city or locality in which you reside, you may have to pay some further sales taxes on your purchases. However, medical drugs and devices are exempted from the 6% sales tax. Other punitive taxes in this state include 9% for hotel lodging and prepared foods, and 10% for alcohol served in hotels. Vermont also has high real estate taxes and is ranked among the top 10 highest taxed states for real estate. Vermont also charges Estate taxes but does not charge inheritance taxes.
2. Minnesota
Minnesota is another high tax state for retired citizens. The state has sales taxes going as high as 9.5% in some locations. Medicine and medical devices, food, and clothes are however, not subject to sales taxes. The income taxes for Minnesota range from between 5.35% to 7.85%. The state also taxes Social Security at the same rate as applied by the IRS. The state also levies taxes on pension distributions, whether originating from within or without the state. The state does give retired citizens an opportunity to defer part of their property taxes to a later date.
3. California
California was traditionally a tax haven for retired citizens, but has in the recent past, lost this attribute owing to various state taxation policies. For a start, the state has very high income tax rates. The state income taxation goes as high as 9.25% for citizens that earn only $46,767.00 and above. The state taxes retirement fund distributions (with the exception of Social Security). Sales taxes are 7.25% starting July 2011 with higher sale tax rates of up to 9.25% applicable in some of the cities in California.
4. Oregon
The income taxes for Oregon range from 5%-11%. The state?s income taxes are some of the highest in the nation, especially for income earners earning more than $250,000.00 a year. The state of Oregon also levies taxes on inheritances for both physical assets and other assets such as bank accounts and funds. However, Oregon does not charge any sales taxes and also charges no Estate Tax. They also do not charge taxes on Social Security for retirees.
5. Nebraska
In Nebraska, the income taxation ranges between 2.56% to 6.84%, depending on one?s income and the city in which one resides. The state levies taxes on Social Security and even on military pensions. The state sales taxes are at 5.5%, but some cities and localities may add a further 1.5% to bring the rate to 7%. Food and medical expenses are however, exempt from sales taxes. The state also charges an inheritance tax. The advantage of Nebraska for retirees is that they offer a homestead exemption from property taxes for senior citizens aged 65 years and above.

The only payout that receives some tax exemption is Railroad Retirement income. If the senior citizen receives any retirement distributions from outside the state, the funds are fully taxed. The income taxes for this state range between 3.55% and 8.95%. The state also charges a sales tax of 6% and depending on the city or locality in which you reside, you may have to pay some further sales taxes on your purchases. However, medical drugs and devices are exempted from the 6% sales tax. Other punitive taxes in this state include 9% for hotel lodging and prepared foods, and 10% for alcohol served in hotels. Vermont also has high real estate taxes and is ranked among the top 10 highest taxed states for real estate. Vermont also charges Estate taxes but does not charge inheritance taxes.
2. Minnesota
Minnesota is another high tax state for retired citizens. The state has sales taxes going as high as 9.5% in some locations. Medicine and medical devices, food, and clothes are however, not subject to sales taxes. The income taxes for Minnesota range from between 5.35% to 7.85%. The state also taxes Social Security at the same rate as applied by the IRS. The state also levies taxes on pension distributions, whether originating from within or without the state. The state does give retired citizens an opportunity to defer part of their property taxes to a later date.

California was traditionally a tax haven for retired citizens, but has in the recent past, lost this attribute owing to various state taxation policies. For a start, the state has very high income tax rates. The state income taxation goes as high as 9.25% for citizens that earn only $46,767.00 and above. Sales taxes are 7.25% starting July 2011 with higher sale tax rates of up to 9.25% applicable in some of the cities in California.

The income taxes for Oregon range from 5%-11%. The state?s income taxes are some of the highest in the nation, especially for income earners earning more than $250,000.00 a year. The state of Oregon also levies taxes on inheritances for both physical assets and other assets such as bank accounts and funds. 5. Nebraska
In Nebraska, the income taxation ranges between 2.56% to 6.84%, depending on one?s income and the city in which one resides. The state levies taxes on Social Security and even on military pensions. The state sales taxes are at 5.5%, but some cities and localities may add a further 1.5% to bring the rate to 7%. Food and medical expenses are however, exempt from sales taxes. The state also charges an inheritance tax. The advantage of Nebraska for retirees is that they offer a homestead exemption from property taxes for senior citizens aged 65 years and above.
