What Time Is It?

Image: Ron Chapple/Getty Images

That simple question is probably asked more often today than ever. In our clock-studded society, the answer is never more than a glance away, and so we can blissfully partition our days into ever smaller increments for ever more tightly scheduled tasks, confident that we will always know it is 7:03 p.m.

Modern scientific revelations about time, however, make the question endlessly frustrating. If we seek a precise knowledge of the time, the elusive infinitesimal of ?now? dissolves into a scattering flock of nanoseconds. Bound by the speed of light and the velocity of nerve impulses, our perceptions of the present sketch the world as it was an instant ago?for all that our consciousness pretends otherwise, we can never catch up. Even in principle, perfect synchronicity escapes us. Relativity dictates that, like a strange syrup, time flows slower on moving trains than in the stations and faster in the mountains than in the valleys. The time for our wristwatch is not exactly the same as the time for our head. It is roughly 7:04 p.m.

Our intuitions are deeply paradoxical. Time heals all wounds, but it is also the great destroyer. Time is relative but also relentless. There is time for every purpose under heaven, but there is never enough. Time flies, crawls and races. Seconds can be both split and stretched. Like the tide, time waits for no man, but in dramatic moments it also stands still. It is as personal as the pace of one?s heartbeat but as public as the clock ?tower in the town square. We do our best to reconcile the contradictions. It seems like 7:05 p.m.

And of course, time is money. It is the partner of change, the antagonist of speed, the currency in which we pay attention. It is our most precious, irreplaceable commodity. Yet still we say we don?t know where it goes, and we sleep away a third of it, and none of us really can account for how much we have left. We can find 100 ways to save time, but the amount remaining nonetheless diminishes steadily. It is already 7:06 p.m.

Time and memory shape our perceptions of our own identity. We may feel ourselves to be at history?s mercy, but we also see ourselves as free-willed agents of the future. That conception is disturbingly at odds with the ideas of physicists and philosophers, however, because if time is a dimension like those of space, then yesterday, today and tomorrow are all equally concrete and determined. The future exists as much as the past does; it is just in a place that we have not yet visited. Somewhere, it is 7:07 p.m.

?Time is the substance of which I am made,? Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges wrote. ?Time is a river that carries me away, but I am the river; it is a tiger that destroys me, but I am the tiger; it is a fire that consumes me, but I am the fire.? This special issue of Scientific American summarizes what science has discovered about how time permeates and guides both our physical world and our inner selves. That knowledge should enrich the imagination and provide practical advantages to anyone hoping to beat the clock or at least to stay in step with it. It is now 7:08 p.m. Synchronize your watches.

Trade finance grows in 2011 | Business | The Phnom Penh Post ...

Some of Cambodia?s banks this week noted a sizeable jump in trade financing in 2011, pointing to the Kingdom?s resurgent economy after the global financial crisis.

But the banks also said many Cambodian businesses still were unaware of the financing services available to them.

ACLEDA Bank, the Kingdom?s largest, experienced a 20 per cent jump in trade financing to US$40 million for the year, with imports accounting for 70 per cent of the total, according to ACLEDA executive vice-president So Phonnary.

?We noticed a lot of our agricultural products were recognised globally this year, so we needed to import more equipment to increase our export capacity,? she said.

The agro-processing sector was one of ACLEDA?s biggest customers in 2011, as the need for increased capacity had driven an increase in trade financing, So Phonnary said.

ANZ Royal Bank CEO Stephen Higgins said his company?s clients also sought out higher levels of financing.

?Our trade-finance revenues are significantly higher than the previous year, as we have signed many new customers, and our existing customers have been more active,? Higgins said, adding that most funding went to imports, given the country?s import-heavy economy.

Kookmin Bank Cambodia had collected as much as 143 per cent more in trade financing fees in 2011 than the year before, executive vice-president Kim Eung Nam said.

These banks offered services such as payment and shipping guarantees, as well as letters of credit, that helped streamline the import-export process, the bankers said.

They also removed the risk of dealing with unknown business partners in other countries by keeping the transaction between each trade party?s respective bank.

Even so, many Cambodian firms were not taking advantage of these services, the bankers said.

?I don?t think local businessmen are aware of the benefits,? Outh Renne, managing director of rice miller Mega Green Imex Cambodia, said, adding that some companies did not know such services existed.

?It helps us a lot in planning our business and in preparing paperwork for our foreign partners. It also helps us to avoid risk,? he said.

National Bank of Cambodia director-general and spokeswoman Nguon Sokha yesterday highlighted the differences between trade financing and traditional loans.

Although traditional loans demanded collateral and contained strict lending guidelines, trade financing required only a clear business plan and company structure and sound financial reports, she said.

Nguon Sokha said the take-up of trade financing had increased over the past few years, but there was still plenty of room for growth. ?Banks need to promote it more.?

Perry challenges Santorum on earmarks (AP)

WASHINGTON, Iowa ? Texas Gov. Rick Perry is questioning former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum's conservative credentials.

Perry said Thursday that he's sometimes confused when Santorum talks about fiscal conservatism. Perry says the former senator loaded up federal legislation with so-called pork-barrel spending for his home state and calls Santorum a "prolific earmarker."

In the race for the GOP presidential nomination, Perry is casting himself as an economic and social conservative best suited to take on President Barack Obama. Perry has slipped in recent polling as Santorum, who also casts himself as the only true conservative, has risen.

Looking to halt Santorum's rise, Perry said, quote: "I love Iowa pork but I hate Washington pork."

Turn down the iPod to save your hearing

Thursday, December 29, 2011

Today's ubiquitous MP3 players permit users to listen to crystal-clear tunes at high volume for hours on end ? a marked improvement on the days of the Walkman. But according to Tel Aviv University research, these advances have also turned personal listening devices into a serious health hazard, with teenagers as the most at-risk group.

One in four teens is in danger of early hearing loss as a direct result of these listening habits, says Prof. Chava Muchnik of TAU's Department of Communication Disorders in the Stanley Steyer School of Health Professions at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine and the Sheba Medical Center. With her colleagues Dr. Ricky Kaplan-Neeman, Dr. Noam Amir, and Ester Shabtai, Prof. Muchnik studied teens' music listening habits and took acoustic measurements of preferred listening levels.

The results, published in the International Journal of Audiology, demonstrate clearly that teens have harmful music-listening habits when it comes to iPods and other MP3 devices. "In 10 or 20 years it will be too late to realize that an entire generation of young people is suffering from hearing problems much earlier than expected from natural aging," says Prof. Muchnik.

Hearing loss before middle age

Hearing loss caused by continuous exposure to loud noise is a slow and progressive process. People may not notice the harm they are causing until years of accumulated damage begin to take hold, warns Prof. Muchnik. Those who are misusing MP3 players today might find that their hearing begins to deteriorate as early as their 30's and 40's ? much earlier than past generations.

The first stage of the study included 289 participants aged 13 to 17. They were asked to answer questions about their habits on personal listening devices (PLDs) ? specifically, their preferred listening levels and the duration of their listening. In the second stage, measurements of these listening levels were performed on 74 teens in both quiet and noisy environments. The measured volume levels were used to calculate the potential risk to hearing according to damage risk criteria laid out by industrial health and safety regulations.

The study's findings are worrisome, says Prof. Muchnik. Eighty percent of teens use their PLDs regularly, with 21 percent listening from one to four hours daily, and eight percent listening more than four hours consecutively. Taken together with the acoustic measurement results, the data indicate that a quarter of the participants are at severe risk for hearing loss.

Dangerous decibels

Currently, industry-related health and safety regulations are the only benchmark for measuring the harm caused by continuous exposure to high volume noise. But there is a real need for additional music risk criteria in order to prevent music-induced hearing loss, Prof. Muchnik says. In the meantime, she recommends that manufacturers adopt the European standards that limit the output of PLDs to 100 decibels. Currently, maximum decibel levels can differ from model to model, but some can go up to 129 decibels.

Steps can also be taken by schools and parents, she says. Some school boards are developing programs to increase awareness of hearing health, such as the "Dangerous Decibels" program in Oregon schools, which provides early education on the subject. Teens could also choose over-the-ear headphones instead of the ear buds that commonly come with an iPod.

In the near future, the researchers will focus on the music listening habits of younger children, including pre-teens, and the development of advanced technological solutions to enable the safe use of PLDs.

"Bambi", "Silence of the Lambs" among U.S. film treasures (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The U.S. National Film Registry on Wednesday named 25 films to be preserved as cultural treasures ranging from the 1942 Walt Disney classic, "Bambi," to the 1991 psychological thriller "The Silence of the Lambs."

The film list also includes the Academy Award-winning "Forrest Gump" starring Tom Hanks and the post-war noir film "The Big Heat," set in a fictional US town that examined domestic life in the 1950s. It includes Hollywood features, documentaries and animation, spanning the period 1912 to 1994.

The latest films were selected from 2,228 films nominated by the public, bringing the total number of films in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress to 575.

"These films are selected because of their enduring significance to American culture," said Librarian of Congress James Billington in a statement.

Independent filmmaking pioneer director and writer John Cassavetes' "Faces," (1968) that criticized middle class America was selected along with "I, an Actress" (1977) by low-budget filmmaker George Kuchar whose outlandish sensibilities inspired other directors such as John Waters.

Early films included "The Cry of the Children," and "A Cure for Pokeritis," -- both from 1912 -- as well as Charlie Chaplin's first feature, the silent classic, "The Kid" (1921).

"Stand and Deliver" (1988), directed by Cuban-born Ramon Menendez, highlighted the 1980s wave of films by Latino filmmakers, and "Hester Street" (1975), shot in black and white and partly in Yiddish, showed Eastern European Jewish life in the United States that was initially shunned by Hollywood.

Other films included Billy Wilder's drama about alcoholism, "The Lost Weekend" (1945), John Ford's 1924 western "The Iron Horse," and "Norma Rae" (1979) which starred Sally Field as an unlikely single mother activist trying to improve work conditions.

Composer George Gershwin "Porgy and Bess" (1959) marked the rise of the civil rights movement as some black actors turned down roles and "The Negro Soldier" (1944) showcased the heroism of black soldiers and became mandatory viewing for all soldiers.

Animations included a one-minute film by Pixar Animation Studios' co-founder Ed Catmull, "A Computer Animated Hand" (1972) that is one of the earliest examples of 3D computer animation. Documentaries included "Growing up Female" that gave a portrait of the US women's liberation movement in the early 1970s.

Georgetown Upsets Louisville, Snapping Cardinals Winning Streak

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Markel Starks scored 16 of his career-high 20 points in the second half and No. 12 Georgetown snapped No. 4 Louisville's 20-game home winning streak with a 71-68 victory Wednesday night in the Big East opener for both teams.

Louisville (12-1, 0-1) had been one of six Division I teams that came into play Wednesday without a loss. The Cardinals held a tenuous lead through most of the first half and early into the second.

But Starks, a sophomore, hit all four of his 3-point attempts in the second half and went 7 for 8 from the field as Georgetown (11-1, 1-0) built an 11-point lead before having to survive a rally to win for the ninth consecutive time.

Georgetown freshman Otto Porter had 14 points and 14 rebounds, including two key ones late that helped fend off the Cardinals.

Kyle Kuric finished with 17 points and Peyton Siva had 15 for Louisville.

Georgetown, picked to finish 10th in the Big East, hasn't lost since falling to Kansas on Nov. 21. This was their grittiest effort yet, coming from behind to build a big lead and then held on when Louisville rallied late in front of a raucous crowd.

Trailing 63-52, the Cardinals went on an 11-0 run sparked when Russ Smith hit a 3 in the corner and Siva made two key plays, including hitting a floater off the glass before Gorgui Dieng scored down low to tie the score with 2:01 left.

Porter followed up a miss by Henry Sims with a layup, then grabbed a defensive rebound on the other end that led to two free throws by Sims that made it 67-63 with 1:12 left. Porter added two free throws to push the margin to six before Smith hit a 3-pointer to cut it to 69-66 with 21 seconds left.

But Porter hit two more free throws to seal it.

Louisville had been off to its best start since 1974-75 and its longest home winning streak since 1984 even though the Cardinals needed to rally to win their last three nonconference games and must play No. 3 Kentucky at Rupp Arena next.

Hollis Thompson, who finished with 10 points, hit a jumper and then made a 3 to put the Hoyas up 51-47 with just under 9 minutes left. As play came toward the Louisville end, referee Karl Hess assessed a technical on the Cardinals' bench and Jason Clark hit both free throws to make it a six-point game.

Louisville coach Rick Pitino was adamant about the call, coming out to halfcourt to state his case and later talking to referee Jim Burr at the next media timeout.

After Kuric hit two free throws, Starks made consecutive 3s to give Georgetown a 59-49 lead with 6:06 left. Kuric made his fifth 3, but Sims answered with a jump hook over Dieng and then found Starks cutting down the lane for a layup that made it 63-52 with 4 1/2 minutes to play.

The Cardinals, who have rallied from deficits of seven or more nine times dating to last season, made one final push. That's when Porter thwarted them late.

Study uncovers a molecular 'maturation clock' that modulates branching architecture in tomato plants

Study uncovers a molecular 'maturation clock' that modulates branching architecture in tomato plants

Tuesday, December 27, 2011

The secret to pushing tomato plants to produce more fruit might not lie in an extra dose of Miracle-Gro. Instead, new research from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) suggests that an increase in fruit yield might be achieved by manipulating a molecular timer or so-called "maturation clock" that determines the number of branches that make flowers, called inflorescences.

"We have found that a delay in this clock causes more branching to occur in the inflorescences, which in turn results in more flowers and ultimately, more fruits," says CSHL Assistant Professor Zach Lippman, who led the research team. The new study, which involved a high-resolution, genome-level comparison of the stem cell populations from three tomato varieties that each have different branching architectures, will appear online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences during the week of December 26.

When a plant is ready to flower, populations of stem cells, called shoot apical meristems, which are found in the growing tips, stop producing leaves and begin producing flowers by transforming into "inflorescence meristems." Depending on the tomato variety, inflorescences meristems can make just one branch with a few flowers arranged in the familiar, photogenic zigzag pattern (shown), or multiple branches with dozens of flowers, as seen in closely-related wild relatives of tomatoes, which are native to South America.

Although most domesticated varieties, which have been bred to produce edible, delicious fruit, produce a single inflorescence branch with just a few flowers, some varieties make dozens of branches bearing hundreds of flowers. "Although one might think that all this branching is good, too much branching is not a desirable trait, because the plant spends so much energy on making flowers on those branches that it ends up not having the resources to set those flowers into fruits," explains Lippman. "So there needs to be a balance, which the wild relatives of tomatoes seem to have achieved."

Previous studies hypothesized that extreme branching might be the result of a pause or a delay in the maturation of inflorescence meristems, causing them to sprout extra branches instead of ending their growth by making flowers. "Our previous work as well as those of others hinted at the existence of a timer or clock," Lippman notes. "We wanted to define this clock at the highest resolution, in terms of the genes that modulate the rate of meristem maturation, with the idea that finding the genes that define the clock would enable us to tweak it to get the desired level of branching."

Using a systems biology approach and next-generation sequencing technology to "capture" the transcriptome? the activity of all the genes in a genome ?of stem cells at five different stages of maturation, the team identified nearly 4000 genes that represent the clock. With help from CSHL associate professor and computational biologist Michael Schatz, the team, which included post-doctoral researchers Soon-ju Park and Ke Jiang, compared the clocks of a mutant variety that undergoes extreme branching and a wild relative from Peru that undergoes modest branching.

This analysis revealed that subtle differences in the activity of the clock's genes could alter branching architecture. "Our data showed that wild relatives of tomato have evolved to have a slight delay in maturation, which leads to just a few more branches and a doubling of the number of flowers and fruits compared to what is typically found on cultivated tomatoes grown for ketchup or in the home garden," explains Lippman, who is enthusiastic about the implications of this work and the next steps that his team will take. "We now have a master list of candidate genes that we can go after to manipulate the clock in order to make domesticated tomatoes produce a branching architecture that's similar to the wild variety," he says.

Police find 7 bodies in northern Mexico (AP)

MONTERREY, Mexico ? Police in the northern Mexico state of Nuevo Leon said Tuesday that information provided by arrested members of a kidnapping gang has led them to at least seven bodies found buried in shallow graves or dumped in a well.

By nightfall, Nuevo Leon state police had found seven sets of human remains around the cities of Linares and Montemorelos, near the border with Tamaulipas state. Four bodies were found burned or half-buried, and three others had apparently been thrown down a well.

A Nuevo Leon state detective who was not authorized to be quoted by name said information from a band of five kidnappers detained over the weekend by soldiers led police to the bodies.

The soldiers detained the gang after a woman's relatives alerted a passing army patrol that she was being kidnapped.

Nuevo Leon security spokesman Jorge Domene said the gang worked for the Zetas drug cartel.

Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon have been the scene of bloody turf battles between the Zetas and the Gulf cartel.

Also Tuesday, federal prosecutors announced that a former high-ranking federal police official has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for helping the Sinaloa drug cartel.

The case of former regional police security coordinator Javier Herrera Valles had been a scandal and for some a cause celebre, in part because he was arrested after having publicly accused some of his superiors of corruption or incompetence.

The Attorney General's Office said in a statement Tuesday that Herrera Valles had been convicted of organized crime charges for aiding the Sinaloa drug cartel, Mexico's most powerful gang.

He was arrested in 2008, around the same time Mexico arrested a number of high-ranking officials for collaborating with drug cartels.

Australia beat India at the MCG by 122 runs

By Sportsmail Reporter

Last updated at 9:28 AM on 29th December 2011

Australia's pace attack produced a bowling display reminiscent of the side's era of dominance as they swept India aside to secure a 122-run victory in the first Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The performances of Ben Hilfenhaus, James Pattinson and Peter Siddle carried shades of Jason Gillespie, Brett Lee and Glenn McGrath in their pomp, as the tourists fell some way short of the 292 they had been set to win.

The quick trio bowled with tremendous accuracy throughout a devastating 47.5-over innings that spanned all three sessions on the fourth day, with Pattinson, who took four for 53, narrowly shading the honours.

Aussie rules: The hosts celebrate their 122-run win over India at the MCG

Aussie rules: The hosts celebrate their 122-run win over India at the MCG

But despite the 21-year-old rising star taking the most wickets, it was a collective effort that saw the Baggy Green across the finish line, with the three-pronged attack showing enough to suggest they can spearhead a bid to return to the top of the Test rankings - something that was taken for granted by Australians for almost a decade.

India had occupied that position until their whitewash in England earlier this summer and Mahendra Singh Dhoni's side again showed worrying signs overseas.

Dhoni said afterwards: 'I think they bowled a really good line close to that off-stump area... I think the length and line they bowled was very crucial.

'We thought if we could get them out for 240 or 250-odd runs that's a very gettable score, but I felt 290-odd runs was also a score we should have achieved.

'The wicket was pretty good. It's not like there was too much wear and tear in the wicket. I think our batting line flopped in both the innings.

Special delivery: Peter Siddle and the rest of his pace attack ripped through India

Special delivery: Peter Siddle and the rest of his pace attack ripped through India

In the second innings, we kept falling at regular intervals which meant getting close to 300-odd runs was becoming more and more difficult.'

The tourists were always likely to be up against it chasing what was a fourth-highest MCG winning total, but their mindset could have been so different had they not allowed Pattinson and Hilfenhaus to take them on with the bat.

When Mike Hussey, who should have been given out when he edged Umesh Yadav behind, was snared by Zaheer Khan for 88, the margin was 249 but, 10 overs of improvised batting from the bowlers later, it was 43 runs greater.

Hilfenhaus fell to Ishant Sharma for 14 and then delivered with the ball in a nine-over spell before lunch, getting one to climb on Virender Sehwag who could only find Hussey in the gully.

India returned after lunch on 24 for one, but by the time they were back in the pavilion for tea, the score was 117 for six as Australia dominated a stunning middle session.

First an out-of-form Gautam Ghambir was tied in knots by Siddle - surviving twice in one over - before diverting an almost unplayable delivery from the same bowler into the hands of Ricky Ponting at second slip.

That brought Sachin Tendulkar to the crease - the master batsman still chasing an elusive 100th international ton - and even he showed signs of pressure as he narrowly avoided a run out from the arm of David Warner.

He had another elder statesman, Rahul Dravid, for company, but that did not last long as 'The Wall' misread one from Patterson and lost his middle stump for 10.

Making a stand: Not even Virender Sehwag could stop his team's slide

The same bowler then got rid of VVS Laxman, who failed to spot Ed Cowan lurking at square leg when he flicked one off his legs and, when Hilfenhaus, who took two for 39, trapped Virat Kohli in front for a golden duck, India were sinking fast at 69 for five.

That quickly became 81 for six as Siddle, with the first ball of his second spell, got one to grow on Tendulkar who gave Hussey an easy catch in the gully.

Dhoni and R Ashwin then had a swinging session leading in to tea, but the latter fell just after it for 30, gloving a climber from Siddle (three for 42) to Cowan who had come in to short square leg.

Zaheer Khan decided to have some fun and clubbed Pattinson for six but paid with the very next ball, walking across his stumps to try and hit the 21-year-old out of the ground but only serving to fudge one to the ever-alert Cowan.

Dhoni (23) then lost his off stump to Pattinson as India fell apart at nine for 142 and, although Yadav had a late slog, he perished on 21 when he took on spinner Nathan Lyon and was caught out by a sprinting Warner on the boundary to wrap things up.

Ford is hoping history can repeat itself with the upcoming launch of the next-generation Fusion four-door.

It?s been more than a quarter century since the maker revolutionized automotive design with the original Taurus sedan. Its windswept styling helped Ford dominate the huge midsize market segment, and led most competitors to migrate to more aerodynamic designs. The new Fusion, which makes its debut at the Detroit Auto Show next month, will borrow many of the visual cues of the recent Ford Evos concept car and, if early reviews are any indication, could help the maker topple the imports that have dominated the midsize segment over the last two decades.

Ford isn?t alone seeing opportunity in one of the largest and most important segments of the U.S. market. Chevrolet is gunning to gain sales and market share with the new 2013 Malibu, while Chrysler will use the Detroit Auto Show to reveal the new Dart, the first major new product developed as part of the U.S. maker?s alliance with Italy?s Fiat SpA.

?We see the Americans coming out with a lot of product that?s not only new but very attention-grabbing,? says Aaron Bragman, a Detroit-based automotive analyst with IHS.

And it?s not just in the midsize segment, he adds. Detroit?s automakers are filling showrooms with an assortment of products that are decidedly more attractive and competitive than the market has seen in years, from the newly-updated Ford Escape crossover to Cadillac?s premium-luxury XTS and entry-luxury ATS sedans.

?It?s a lot of stuff that?s going to make it a lot more difficult for the Japanese to regain market share,? added Bragman.

That?s good news for the so-called Big Three, but a serious headache for Japan?s top-tier manufacturers. Toyota and Honda, in particular, are desperately counting on 2012 to bring a turnaround after several years of unexpected struggles. The outgoing year, in particular, saw them hammered by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that all but shut down the Japanese auto industry, the two collectively falling about 1 million units short of original production 2011 production plans.

With dealers struggling for inventory sales were down sharply, Honda expected to end the year with a 1.5 point decline in market share, Toyota?s share plunging as much as 2.5 points. The Detroit makers, on the other hand, will end the year with roughly 47 percent of the market, a gain of about 2 percentage points. It will be the first year since 1998, in fact, that all of the Big Three will have posted gains.

The question, cautions analyst Bragman, ?is whether they can keep that momentum going??

The Japanese aren't intending to make it easy. They?re ramping up production as rapidly as possible. And they?re rolling out plenty of new product of their own ? but getting decidedly more mixed reviews than they might have anticipated in the past. The critical Honda Civic, for example, was panned by Consumer Reports magazine. The automaker now rushing an update to market as quickly as possible.

?Some of the sales results (for recent new models) have been quite a disappointment,? acknowledges Tetsuo Iwamura, CEO of American Honda.

Honda isn?t alone. The new Toyota Camry has generated a largely ho-hum response despite the most expensive ad campaign in the Japanese brand?s history.

Significantly, the two Asian automakers are now spending more money than ever on rebates, low-interest loans and other incentives? ? a distinct shift in direction for companies that used to lambast their Detroit competitors for having to give away their products.

Detroit makers are still putting plenty of ?cash on the hood,? but they?ve steadily cut back on the givebacks this past year as offerings like the compact Chevrolet Cruze and Ford Focus have clicked with consumers.

Even if the incentive wars heat up again, the domestic makers are in a better position to keep up with the competition thanks to recent contracts signed with the United Auto Workers Union. The typical UAW worker now makes a bit over $50 an hour in wages and benefits, down from more than $75 in 2007. Add other concessions and the savings amount to several thousand dollars a vehicle. That's a critical reason why Detroit?s collective profits for 2011 will likely top $10 billion after decades of devastating losses and the 2009 bankruptcies of General Motors and Chrysler.

On the other hand, Japanese makers have suffered from plunging earnings that are expected to remain in the doldrums for at least the near to mid-term. Complicating matters, the strong yen is not only slashing earnings but forcing companies like Honda and Toyota to shift production off the home islands.

While Detroit may be getting a bit of a reprieve from the relentless onslaught of the Japanese the Big Three can?t rest on 2011 results. Korean carmakers Hyundai and Kia have gained even more share at the expense of the Japanese and are showing a willingness to spend whatever it takes to become dominant global players.

And then there?s Volkswagen, which has shown a newfound strength in the U.S. It may end 2011 as the globe?s largest automaker, toppling troubled Toyota.

Indeed, Detroit can no longer afford to focus on just the American market. With China now a larger national market than the U.S., it is readily apparent that no single market can make or break ? or be allowed to make or break ? a manufacturer. That?s readily apparent when one considers that nearly two-thirds of GM sales now come from outside the States.

But the turnaround at home will nonetheless help, especially as the U.S. remains the world?s most profitable automotive market. So, if the Detroit makers can maintain the outgoing year?s momentum in 2012 they should be positioned for the comeback they have so long and so desperately sought.

Cruise's 'Mission' accomplishes box-office win (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Hollywood has picked up a little Christmas bonus.

Studios generally underestimated the size of their movie audiences over the weekend, and they're now revising the holiday revenues upward.

Leading the way is Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol," which pulled in $29.5 million for the weekend. That Monday figure is $3 million more than distributor Paramount estimated a day earlier.

For the four-day period Friday to Monday, Paramount estimates "Ghost Protocol" will have taken in $46.2 million to raise its domestic total to $78.6 million. That's on top of $140 million the film has taken in overseas, giving it a worldwide haul of $218.6 million.

Studios Monday also reported stronger results than they did a day earlier for Robert Downey Jr.'s "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," which was No. 2 at $20.3 million for the three-day weekend and $31.8 million for the four-day period; Steven Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin" at No. 5 with $9.7 million over three days and $16.1 million for four days; and Matt Damon's "We Bought a Zoo" at No. 6 with $9.5 million over three days and $15.6 million for four days.

In a tight race for the No. 4 spot were David Fincher's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and the family sequel "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked."

"Dragon Tattoo" did $12.8 million over three days and $19.4 million for four days. "Chipwrecked" took in $12.7 million over three days and $20 million for four days.

A few films debuted on Christmas Day, among them Spielberg's World War I epic "War Horse," which took in $7.5 million Sunday. Through Monday, its estimated two-day total is $15 million.

Also debuting was Emile Hirsch's action thriller "The Darkest Hour," which earned $3 million Sunday and had a two-day total of $5.5 million through Monday.

Opening solidly in just six theaters was Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock's Sept. 11 drama "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," which took in $71,000 Sunday and $136,000 through Monday. The film expands to nationwide release in January.

Despite the upward revision on some movies' revenues, the Christmas weekend continued a box-office slide that has persisted since Thanksgiving. Overall revenues from Friday to Monday totaled $184 million, down 10 percent from Christmas weekend last year, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

Mexico Nueva Leon Police Find Bodies Dumped In Well, Shallow Graves

Lookout Mountain's Covenant College pioneers library technology

Covenant College was founded in 1955 on Lookout Mountain. Staff File Photo by Dan Henry. Covenant College was founded in 1955 on Lookout Mountain. Staff File Photo by Dan Henry.

Sitting on top of Lookout Mountain, Covenant College sometimes is lost in the clouds.

Now the private Dade County, Ga., school's Kresge Memorial Library will be in the clouds on a daily basis.

The school is the 11th in the world to launch a cloud-based library system to streamline administrative functions and give access to books and media in libraries around the world, according to Tad Mindeman, Covenant's director of library services.

"It's unlike anything that has been done before," he said.

In technological terms, the "cloud" refers to the storage of users' data and software on remote servers that can be accessed through any Internet connection.

For students and faculty at Covenant, doing a search on the library's system is like using Google, only in this case they can see all of the books and electronic resources available in different libraries, Mindeman said.

Covenant College was among about three dozen libraries to test the Online Computer Library Center's new cloud-based integrated operating system -- called WorldShare -- in February.

It is a tech platform designed to emphasize "collaboration and app-sharing across the library community," according to the group. The Online Computer Library Center is a nonprofit membership and research organization.

"Every library has some sort of software system it uses to run its internal operation, cataloging, circulation, acquisitions," Mindeman said. "What's different about what we did is a brand new product, OCLS [Online Computer Library Center], really invented a catalog of catalogs of libraries from all over the world."

That saves time and money on the administrative side, he said.

Covenant College paid an initial $20,000 to move all of the data to the new system. Each month the college pays about $3,000 for the service, but in the long run it will save money because the college does not have to maintain servers and upgrade software, Mindeman said.

The technology world in general is shifting more toward cloud computing, where everything is done remotely, including data storing, said Marshall Breeding, director of innovative technologies and research at Vanderbilt University.

And it is a trend libraries have started to follow.

"If you look forward five years from now, a much larger number of libraries would have moved in that direction by then," Breeding said.

Gaza PM in Egypt, 1st visit since Hamas takeover (AP)

CAIRO ? Gaza's Hamas premier was in Egypt Monday on his first trip outside the blockaded territory since the Islamists overran it in 2007, saying his meeting with his Islamic ideological mentors threatens Israel.

Ismail Haniyeh discussed Mideast politics with the leader of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood, which has emerged as the biggest winner in the first parliamentary elections in post-uprising Egypt, capturing nearly half of the seats so far.

Hamas is considered an offshoot of the Brotherhood.

Brotherhood leader Mohammed Badie met Haniyeh at the group's newly inaugurated headquarters in a Cairo suburb.

"The Brotherhood center has always embraced issues of liberation, foremost the Palestinian issue," Badie said, according to Egypt's state Middle East News Agency.

The Brotherhood renounced violence in the 1970s, but it supports Hamas in its "resistance" against Israel.

Hamas is considered a terror group by Israel, the U.S. and EU, killing hundreds of Israelis in attacks, including suicide bombings. The West insists that before it deals with Hamas, the group must renounce violence, recognize Israel and accept existing peace accords. Hamas has refused.

Haniyeh described Hamas as the "jihadi movement of the Brotherhood with a Palestinian face." He said his visit to the Brotherhood center would confuse and frighten Israel.

"Our presence with the Brotherhood threatens the Israeli entity, " Haniyeh said according to MENA.

Israel has expressed concern that a new Egyptian government under Islamist influence might cancel Egypt's 1979 peace treaty with Israel.

Hamas took Gaza by force in a brief, bloody civil war in 2007, expelling forces of the rival Fatah, led by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Israel and Egypt responded by blockading Gaza. Badie criticized the blockade during his meeting with Haniyeh, according to MENA.

Egypt has been heading efforts to reconcile the two rivals. They came to some agreements last week in talks in Cairo. Hamas was represented by its supreme leader, Khaled Mashaal, who is based in Damascus.

Haniyeh said during his visit to the Arab League that reconciliation with Fatah is a "strategic" matter that should not be hindered by American and Israeli objections. Israel has said the closer Fatah gets to Hamas, the further it moves from a peace deal.

US weighs Yemen leader's travel request

The Obama administration is considering whether to allow Yemen's outgoing president Ali Abdullah Saleh into the United States for medical treatment as fresh violence and political tensions flare in the strategically important Middle-East nation.

A senior administration official says Saleh's office requested that he be allowed to receive specialized treatment in the U.S. for injuries sustained in a June attack on his compound.

Saleh announced Saturday that he was leaving for the U.S. in order to help calm tensions in his country following a fresh wave of violence, but he said his travel was not for medical treatment.

Saleh's presence in Yemen has angered many there, who say he wants to continue to wield his influence despite agreeing to transfer power following months of protests.

"The request for approval for President Saleh to travel to the United States is currently under consideration. The only reason that travel to the United States by President Saleh would be approved would be for legitimate medical treatment," said the senior Obama administration official, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

The official said Saleh's office recently contacted the U.S. embassy in Sanaa to say the president plans to leave Yemen soon and wants to get specialized care in the United States related to injuries he sustained in a June assassination attempt that forced him into hospital in Saudi Arabia.

On Saturday, just hours after his forces killed nine people who had demanded he be tried for the killings of demonstrators over the past year, Saleh said he would leave for the United States and give way to a successor. He did not say when he would depart.

Saleh: 'I'm fine'
The Yemeni leader said he would undergo some medical tests but characterized his intended trip as one of temporary exile.

"I will go to the United States. Not for treatment, because I'm fine, but to get away from attention, cameras, and allow the unity government to prepare properly for elections," he said.

"I'll be there for several days, but I'll return because I won't leave my people and comrades who have been steadfast for 11 months," Saleh said.

Increasing bloodshed and political uncertainty in Yemen is a major concern to its neighbor Saudi Arabia and Saleh's former supporters in Washington, who worry the country's al Qaeda wing could gain control of key oil shipping routes in the chaos.

President Barack Obama's top counterterrorism official John Brennan called Yemen's acting leader on Sunday to emphasize the need for Yemeni forces "to show maximum restraint" when dealing with demonstrations, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said in a statement issued in Hawaii where Obama is vacationing.

In his phone conversation with Yemeni Vice President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, Brennan also called for all sides in Yemen's political transition to avoid "provocative acts that could spur further violence."

Hadi told Brennan he has launched an investigation into the deaths and injuries that occurred and said he would do his utmost to prevent further bloodshed, Earnest said, adding both officials agreed it was important to stick to the transition path leading to the February 21, 2012, presidential election.

"Mr. Brennan told Vice President Hadi that the United States remains a strong and fervent supporter of the Yemeni people in their quest to realize their richly deserved aspirations for security, political stability, representative government, and economic prosperity," Earnest said.

Hadi on Sunday urged Saleh's foes and loyalists to commit to a truce.

Ultrasonic screwdriver sniffs out carbon fiber damage, planes book a check-up with The Doctor

Lighter planes means less fuel, means less money and, hopefully, lower ticket prices. Carbon fiber reinforcements are a major part of this plan; both Boeing's latest bird and the double-decker Airbus make liberal use of the light and strong composite. However, they're not without their own dangers; minute amounts of water can get into the carbon fibers, which then form ice at high altitude, damaging the fiber structures. This sort of miniature damage is -- unlike aluminum versions -- very difficult to spot. Embarrassingly, the engineers' best bet to detect the ruined fibers until recently was to tap on the composite structures with a small hammer and listen for a hollow noise that would signpost water damage.

EADS, which depends on carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) for its own Airbus fuselage, has now created an ultrasonic gun that can detect this damage. This sonic screwdriver is able to detect and visualize these invisible problems by bouncing sound off the plane's surface and, well, it's like that hammer test, but a heck of a lot more precise. The company hopes to ready the device for regular use by the end of next year.

(AP) ? Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was scheduled for an MRI late Saturday after taking a direct hit to his left knee in a 33-26 win over the Washington Redskins.

Coach Leslie Frazier said Peterson had a sprained knee and would be evaluated after the team returned to Minnesota.

"It's such a special person that you want to be right before you prognosticate on what might be," Frazier said.

Peterson said he knew "it was something bad" the moment he was hit and that he was in "severe pain" on he lay on the field. He was hurt when tackled by Redskins safety DeJon Gomes at the end of a 3-yard gain on the first offensive play of the second half.

"Anytime you take a blow to the knee like that, you're concerned about the ACL, MCL," Peterson said as he stood on crutches in the locker room. "I'm trying to stay as positive as I can."

A torn ACL, the worst case scenario, would likely sideline Peterson for some nine months and make it difficult for him to return for the start of next season.

On the play after Peterson was hurt, Minnesota's Christian Ponder suffered a head injury when sacked by Adam Carriker and London Fletcher. Ponder remained in the game for one more play ? a third-down incomplete pass ? before heading to the locker room.

Frazier said Ponder had "concussion-like symptoms." The coach said he's uncertain whether the quarterback will play in next week's season finale against the Chicago Bears.

"We'll have to weigh it when we get back," Frazier said, "and I'll follow the doctor's lead."

Peterson had 12 carries for 38 yards when he left. He also had a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Ponder completed 8 of 13 passes for 68 yards. He was replaced by Joe Webb, who scored on a 9-yard run on the next series to give the Vikings the lead.
