A JJ Abrams project that had seemed dormant is now getting more active. A new report says that the Star Trek producer/director is moving ahead on a reboot of Universal?s 1974 disaster movie Earthquke. Abrams has now hired a writer for project. More details below.

Abrams hires writer for ?Earthquake? reboot

Back in 2008 we reported that JJ Abrams and his Bad Robot production company were working on a project with Universal to reboot the 1974 disaster movie Earthquake. This would be unusual for Abrams who has a deal with Paramount Pictures, however this film seems to be an exception. Nothing had been reported on this project since the summer of 2008 (and JJ has been busy since then), but now Deadline is reporting the project is back and Abrams has tapped a new writer, bringing in Lance Black (Milk).

Abrams and fellow Star Trek producer Bryan Burk are set as producers of the film. No director has been announced. The film is expected to be a new story and not a remake of the original Earthquake (see original trailer below).

Livestock groups seek drought relief with ethanol waiver

(Reuters) - Hard-hit livestock and poultry producers petitioned the government on Monday to reduce or cancel the required use of ethanol in gasoline for a year, asking for "a little help" to ride out the worst drought in 56 years.

The request for a first-ever waiver from the federal Environmental Protection Agency's mandate, which in essence requires that more than a third of the U.S. corn harvest be converted into ethanol, comes as grain prices surge to record highs, driving up feed costs and squeezing profits for producers.

"We are having trouble buying corn... it's really putting a burden on our operations and many others across the nation," says J.D. Alexander, president of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, whose Nebraska feedlot is about half full of cattle. "It's time to wean the ethanol industry and let it stand on its own."

The EPA has not granted a waiver since the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) was enacted in 2007. The policy has enjoyed years of staunch bipartisan support, boosting income for U.S. farmers and helping reduce the country's dependence on foreign oil. But it is now coming under renewed attack.

The beef, chicken, pork and turkey trade groups said they had delivered a petition to EPA administrator Lisa Jackson to waive the mandate "in whole or in substantial part" for the remainder of this year and part of next.

The request itself had been expected as livestock groups hit hardest by the 60 percent rise in corn prices over the past six weeks ramped up lobbying efforts. It is far from clear whether they will succeed where Texas Gov. Rick Perry failed four years ago, when he sought a partial waiver.

The groups said the mandate had proved powerful enough to "directly affect the supply and cost of feed", causing sufficient harm to meet the requirement of severe economic or environmental harm. But analysts say meeting that criteria may be difficult to prove.

It is also unclear what kind of political reception the request will have in Washington ahead of the November election, in which President Barack Obama, a supporter of ethanol, seeks a second term. Some of the most fiercely contested states are in the farm belt, where the mandate is very popular.

"EPA officials and the secretary of agriculture (Tom Vilsack) have all indicated that they are not considering a waiver at this time. I am not sure if this (petition) changes the landscape all that much," said Mark McMinimy, biofuels analyst at Guggenheim Partners Washington Research Group.

IF NOT NOW, WHEN?

Corn futures soared to a record of $8.28-3/4 per bushel this month at the Chicago Board of Trade as the most extensive drought in five decades reduced the yield potential of the developing crop.

About 35 percent of the U.S. corn supply is now used to produce ethanol -- about the same amount that is used as animal feed, according to the U.S. Agriculture Department.

"The whole waiver process, if not enacted now, has to be put into question. If we are not going to do this now, in a historic drought year, then when?" said John Burkel, vice chairman of the National Turkey Federation and a Minnesota turkey farmer.

Two-thirds of the country is suffering from moderate to exceptional drought, the most extensive since at least 1956.

Bob Dinneen, president of the Renewable Fuels Association, said waiving the ethanol mandate would only reduce supplies of the ethanol byproduct of dried distillers' grains, which is also used to feed animals.

"Waiving the RFS won't bring the type of relief the livestock groups are seeking, nor will it result in significantly lower feed prices," Dinneen said. "Because ethanol plants also produce a high protein feed, limiting ethanol production will only further complicate drought related feed issues and costs."

Obama announces new sanctions against Iran

President Barack Obama speaks at a campaign fundraiser in Portland, Oregon, July 24 (Jonathan Ferrey/Getty Ima??President Barack Obama ramped up sanctions on Iran Tuesday as senior aides disputed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's contention that such punitive measures in the past have not slowed Tehran's nuclear program "by one iota."

Mitt Romney's campaign has repeatedly cited Netanyahu's words as part of an effort to paint the president's strategy for keeping Tehran from getting nuclear weapons as a failure and attack him as insufficiently supportive of Israel.

Asked about the prime minister's comments, Obama's deputy national security adviser for strategic communications, Ben Rhodes, told reporters on a conference call that "it is certainly the case that Iran has not yet decided to come in line with their international obligations."

But "we believe the sanctions have had an impact on the Iranian program insofar as they have denied the Iranian government access to revenue that they otherwise would have," said Rhodes. And sanctions have been "making it much more difficult for Iran to procure technology that would be directly relevant to their program."

Robert Einhorn, a top nonproliferation and arms control official at the State Department, said the United States has "a lot of success" in thwarting Iran's efforts to purchase materiel to advance its nuclear and missile program. "We haven't stopped those programs, obviously, but we think these efforts have had an impeding effect," Einhorn said on the same conference call.

"Where we certainly agree with Prime Minister Netanyahu is on the fundamental question that we have not yet seen the Iranian government make a decision to come in line with their international obligations,"? Rhodes said. "So we share very much the assessment of the Israeli government and Prime Minister Netanyahu that the purpose of the sanctions is to change the calculus of the Iranian government with respect to their nuclear program."

"And until they make that decision, we need to continue to increase the pressure," Rhodes said.

Iran stands in violation of repeated U.N. Security Council demands that it freeze its uranium enrichment program.?That process can be a key step towards developing a nuclear weapon, but Iran insists its goals are peaceful. American officials are divided on whether the Islamic republic wants to develop an actual nuclear weapon or, stopping just short of that, the ability to create one. Israel, which is thought to have an undeclared nuclear arsenal, has warned that it cannot tolerate the prospect of a nuclear-armed Iran and signaled that it will consider a unilateral military strike to prevent that outcome.

"We continue to be dissatisfied?as Prime Minister Netanyahu is?with Iran's continued failure to live up to its international obligations," said Rhodes.

The new sanctions, announced in a presidential order, aim to tighten the economic vise on Iran's oil exports?its chief source of cash?by punishing firms or individuals that help Iran circumvent existing prohibitions under U.S. law. The Treasury Department also announced sanctions on two financial institutions?Bank of Kunlun in China and Elaf Islamic Bank in Iraq?for facilitating Tehran's petroleum sales.

"Since taking office, we have presented the Iranian government with a clear choice: come in line with your international obligations and rejoin the community of nations, or face growing consequences," Obama said in a statement.?"With these actions, we are once again reaffirming our commitment to hold the Iranian government accountable for its actions."

"The United States remains committed to a diplomatic solution, but the onus is on Iran to abide by its international obligations," Obama said. "If the Iranian government continues its defiance, there should be no doubt that the United States and our partners will continue to impose increasing consequences."

New sanctions also target firms or individuals that do business with the National Iranian Oil Company, Naftiran Intertrade Company, or the Central Bank of Iran, or help Iran's government acquire dollars or precious metals.

Lords communications committee criticises broadband focus ...

The government?s broadband strategy risks leaving many communities behind by focusing on speed over reach of service, a Lords committee has warned.

The UK could miss out if fast internet services are not treated as a key national asset, the communications committee said in a report.

The government has promised the best superfast broadband in Europe by 2015.

But the Lords committee said its strategy was misguided and the priority should be to close the digital divide.

It said it had found there was ?a very real risk that some people and businesses are being left behind, that inadequate access to the internet and all its benefits is actually afflicting their daily lives?.

Peers congratulated the government for making enhanced broadband a priority but said it had proceeded from a ?flawed prospectus? and become ?preoccupied with the delivery of certain speeds?.

?The delivery of certain speeds should not be the guiding principle; what is important is the long term assurance that as new internet applications emerge, everyone will be able to benefit, from inhabitants of inner cities to the remotest areas of the UK,? they said in the report.

The report calls for the creation of a network of fibre-optic hubs, which would get fast broadband to local communities and businesses when they wanted it.

The peers said broadband should be treated as a vital national asset, like roads, rail and energy.

Conservative peer Lord Inglewood, who chairs the House of Lords Communications Committee, told BBC Radio 4?s Today programme a broadband strategy would focus on speed in an ?ideal world?.

However, he added, money is tight for some and and ?different people have different requirement for speeds?.

?What we need is a system that enables people to get what they want and pay accordingly,? he said.

Liv Garfield, chief executive of BT Open Reach, said she was ?surprised? that the report was so critical.

?Super-connected? cities

?If you look at it across Europe, we have fantastic coverage, we are the most competitive market and we?re seen by many other countries as being the people to follow in terms of broadband access,? she said

Ms Garfield said that there is an aim within the UK?s telecommunications industry to get fibre broadband to more than 90% of the country by 2017.

In the March Budget, the government confirmed the 10 cities which would become ?super-connected? as part of a ?100m investment announced in the Autumn Statement 2011.

It said it would also provide an additional ?50m to fund a second wave of 10 smaller cities.

Ministers hope that the investments in cities will provide ultrafast broadband coverage to 1.7 million households and high-speed wireless broadband for three million residents by 2015.

Microsoft seals Perceptive Pixel deal, welcomes PPI team to the Office Division

In case you haven't noticed, Microsoft's been in a blissful shopping mood lately -- and while we already knew the company had snatched up the creator of that enormous 82-inch touchscreen, today's the day a more formal introduction is taking place. Via its Official Microsoft Blog, the Redmond-based outfit is suitably welcoming the Perceptive Pixel team aboard the Office Division, also announcing that PPI's Founder, Jeff Han, will be joining as a "general manager" and reporting to Kurt DelBene. Naturally, we're still wondering what exactly the acquisition will bring to the table, but if Perceptive Pixel's previous doings are any indication of what's to come, we can expect some more delightful novelties to come out of Microsoft's HQ in the hopefully-not-so-distant future.

LONDON (AP) ? Fresh from her star turn as the latest Bond Girl, Queen Elizabeth II returned to Olympic Park for an encore Saturday, while the usually biting British press gave a resounding review: We are amused.

The queen visited with fawning British Olympians in the athletes village and rode to the top of the 377-foot (115-meter) Orbit tower beside the stadium, where on Friday night she officially opened the 2012 Games. Her husband, Prince Philip, and London Mayor Boris Johnson accompanied her.

Dressed in a royal blue silk dress, crepe coat and matching hat, the queen could be heard remarking at the views of the London skyline and countryside. She wore a brooch given to her in 1948 ? the last time London hosted the Olympics and four years before her accession to the throne.

In describing her role in the opening ceremony, created by director Danny Boyle, Johnson said the queen had told him she was "very, very impressed with the success of her first film appearance, her first dramatic venture. It was very funny and seems to have gone down particularly well with the international audiences."

And, it seems, with the British media.

The Guardian called the queen's appearance "one of the highlights of Danny Boyle's tumultuously inventive opening ceremony of the 2012 Games. ... Now, thanks to Boyle, we really have seen everything."

"I was worried that there was too much self-parody, that the world might be laughing at us," wrote columnist Giles Coren in The Times of London. "But they were laughing with us. They were silently awed."

The show-stopping moment featured the queen making her acting debut alongside Daniel Craig, who portrayed James Bond in a film beamed into the stadium.

Boyle's production showed Bond striding into Buckingham Palace to escort his VIP guest to the Olympic ceremony. Many had expected a famous actress to play the role of the queen, and there was an audible gasped as the real-life royal was seen to swivel round in her desk chair and declare: "Good evening, Mr. Bond."

Buckingham Palace confirmed that the 86-year-old monarch agreed last year to participate. The filming took place at the palace in March and April and featured two of the queen's corgi dogs: Monty and Holly.

At the end of the film segment, two stuntmen dressed as Bond and the queen parachuted from a helicopter into the stadium, and moments later Elizabeth and Philip emerged in the stands.

Boyle told NBC television that the queen had been a natural. "You don't have to tell her something twice," he said. "She picks it up straight away, about cameras and angles."

The sequence has already provided the defining images of the games, according to the Daily Telegraph in Australia, where the queen also reigns.

"A few hundred years ago director Danny Boyle could have been sent to the Tower for even suggesting such treason," the Sydney newspaper said. "But as if to show how far England and the monarchy have come in that time, Her Majesty not only let Boyle get away with it. She was actually in on the joke."

The German newspaper Die Welt wrote that "often seen as reserved and unapproachable, the queen changed all that alongside James Bond."

The queen offered more surprises Saturday as she met about 150 members of the British Olympic team. Spectators took in the scene from balconies draped in Union Jack flags.

"For her to come through and meet the athletes, and see where we're living, it was amazing," said Rose Anderson, 24, a member of the women's basketball team.

"She went inside one of the athletes' bedrooms and chatted to us. It was just awesome, especially after last night," she said. "Last night will never be topped. I'll never get an experience like that again, and then this will never be topped either."

The queen also met athletes from other nations in the dining hall.

"She's beautiful," said Jess Fox, who competes for Australia in the canoe slalom. "We saw her from afar last night in the stadium, but it was amazing to see her like this."

Manning shines in Broncos' first padded practice

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) ? Peyton Manning's first full practice in pads in 18 months drew rave reviews from his coaches and teammates ? and at least one suggestion that his health is no longer even an issue.

Manning put on an aerial show with Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker and others Saturday morning in the latest milestone to his comeback from a nerve injury that cost him all of last season and led to his release from the Indianapolis Colts.

Although Manning threw in full pads during his tryouts at Duke University for the Broncos and other suitors during his first foray into free agency in March and again at times while working out in Denver, this was his first real action in full pads since the Pro Bowl following the 2010 season.

Manning didn't address the media afterward, but coach John Fox said he thought Manning's performance was excellent.

"The guy comes to work every day whether it's in that building or on that field, he attacks it like no other," Fox said.

Although the defenders weren't allowed to hit the Broncos' new $96 million man, Manning seemed to have an extra pep in his step in his first practice at Dove Valley that wasn't in shells or shorts.

"It was great," wide receiver Brandon Stokley said. "It was like the first day of school. Football without pads, it's not football. So, when you put the pads on, you know you're getting close to the season."

Through three days of training camp it's become obvious that Manning's health isn't much of an issue, although it could be some time before he takes his first hit, another big signpost on his comeback from four neck procedures.

"I said this when I was working out with him five months ago ? he looks great," Stokley said. "So, for us now, it's kind of a non-issue of how Peyton's feeling, how he's doing. That's kind of so three months ago. Now he's fine. There's nothing wrong with him."

Stokley, who played with Manning in Indianapolis from 2003-06, said his old friend looks as good today as he did back then.

"He looks like he's just gotten better and better," Stokley said. "He looks normal."

"He looked good when we first got him, to be honest with you," offensive coordinator Mike McCoy concurred. "I knew some things he had told us before he got here, what he thought of where he was, and he's gotten better every day. He's worked extremely hard to get to the point he's at right now."

The next mile marker in Manning's return will be when he takes his first big hit. Just when that will come is a mystery.

Manning threw precious few passes in the preseason in Indianapolis, and the Broncos haven't revealed how much he'll play in their exhibitions. They open at Chicago on Aug. 9 but Manning, whose quick release and cerebral play doesn't lead to very many hits on the quarterback anyway, might not take his first blast from a defender until the season opener against Pittsburgh on Sept. 9, or even later.

"I have no concern over that," Manning told ESPN's Tom Jackson. "I'm not begging James Harrison to blindside me by any means, but I feel I'm going to be able to handle that."

Manning missed all of last season with a nerve injury in his neck that weakened his throwing arm. He has said he'll continue his rehab work throughout the season but has quit "giving percentages" about his health.

Beginning with offseason workouts, Manning has looked sharper and he's been even sharper during the opening days of training camp. Going against a live defense Saturday, he looked even better.

One of his best plays came when Decker found the slightest separation from perennial Pro Bowler Champ Bailey and Manning fit the pass right into the tight window, drawing the biggest ovation from the crowd of 4,443, which broke the two-day-old record for the biggest non-stadium training camp practice in team history.

Manning and Decker hooked up plenty of other times.

"As of right now, we don't like those guys. I'm not on board with their show or whatever that is," deadpanned defensive end Elvis Dumervil. "But those guys are good, give them credit. They're going to make us better, so we've got to compete, and that will be good for us."

Despite watching Manning pick apart his defense, new coordinator Jack Del Rio said it was nice to see his players in pads.

"I was one of the players that benefited from being in pads throughout my career. A lot of times I was beaten out in the spring and I'd take my job back in the fall when we put the pads on," Del Rio said. "So, you can't really settle too much until you get the pads on. This sport is played in pads."

Notes: RT Orlando Franklin missed the last 20 minutes of the morning practice with what Fox said was a crick in his neck. ... Starting S Quinton Carter (right hamstring) sat out.

The batter shouldn`t be so thick, it has to be thin like crepes.

In a warm place, let the batter rest for 20 minutes or more till the bubbles are seen on the surface.

Use a nonstick pan to cook Baghrir.

Pour some batter (enough to cover fully the surface of the pan) on a cold pan using a small ladle, then set the pan on fire. Don`t heat the pan in the beginning!!

On medium high heat, cook Baghrir till you notice that there are plenty holes on the surface.

Keep the same procedure for the rest of batter.

After you cook Baghrir, you may want to serve it with some honey and butter. Some people prefer it with jam others just enjoy it alone.

It?s always pissed me off that I can?t seem to hang out with any one of my guy friends without the nature of that relationship being called into question. You talk all the time and you have so much in common, my female friends have pointed out about these friendships past and present, as if these qualities automatically meant a romantic relationship had to follow. On some level I understand it ? after all, teenagers have formed and continue to form romantic relationships on the basis of much less. But I always found it interesting how when people are presented with a friendship between a man and a woman that is actually based on commonality and equality, they feel they must manipulate it in order to fit their ideas about men and women, which are often based on sexist stereotypes.

It seems that women in these relationships are frequently painted as weak and in love with their male friend. Since women are obviously just on the prowl for a romantic relationship with a guy, sexist stereotypes inform us, they couldn?t possibly just want to be friends with him. Women always want something more, apparently. These relationships are also usually evaluated from a heterosexist perspective ? because while we?re all well acquainted with the concept of girls having male, gay best friends (to the point where they?re often upsettingly portrayed as accessories), the idea of a guy having a female gay best friend is virtually unrecognized. What could he possibly want from her if there is absolutely no hope of having sex with her? We seem to think. Because while women are portrayed as weak and merely in search of somebody on whom they can be dependent, men in these relationships are depicted as only interested in taking advantage of their female ?friend?. Since men are stereotypically portrayed as predatory and less concerned with what women genuinely think or feel as they are with getting in their pants, it just doesn?t make sense to some people that men might actually be interested in being in a relationship with a woman that has no promise of sex. It seems that a friendship between men and women based on equality is just too hard for some to conceptualize.

I have yet to have a friendship with a guy that even remotely resembles that sexist model. However, I have had friendships with guys that I feel are reflective of a different problematic aspect of our culture: our rigid masculinity standards. It has been clear that some of my guy friends feel that they?re able to talk to me ? or any of their other female friends ? about their feelings or other emotional events in their lives in a way that they can?t with their male friends. Whereas they?re afraid that other men will see them as weak, which is unacceptable, they recognize that women are generally (although, let?s be honest, not always) better at having those conversations. While it?s great that because of these relationships guys may feel like they can talk about their feelings at all (as opposed to in the past when, I assume, they didn?t feel like they could talk to anybody) the fact that they still feel so limited in who they can express their feelings to indicates that our society needs to have less rigid masculinity standards. Because while it?s great that guys are talking about their feelings at all, they should be able to have these conversations with their male friends, too.

In light of some amazing friendships I?ve had and have with guys, the fact that some people can?t conceive of an authentic male-female friendship is horribly depressing to me. It?s clear that those people are missing out on really valuable and important friendships. Beyond my belief that it?s beneficial to have a diverse group of friends (including gender diversity), as their perspectives will inevitably help shape your own and allow you to become a more informed and aware individual, I strongly believe that female-male friendships are an essential element of achieving overarching gender equality. Such friendships are historically very new, and are undeniably a product of the women?s movement. These relationships help to demolish misogyny, because when men really know women and love and value them in a way that supersedes sex, it becomes very difficult if not impossible to be sexist. A large part of men?s historical misogyny is due to being able to dehumanize women, and it becomes very difficult to dehumanize women when you are truly able to respect them, and are able to put specific faces and identities to a formerly homogenized group.

This, at the very least, will guarantee games will be readily available from the start, in addition to OUYA?s plans on working directly with developers.

Rebels dismayed over US statement on Syrian conflict

The key city of Aleppo has come under ferocious assault, bombarded by fighter jets and machine gun fire. NBC's Richard Engel reports from northern Syria.

NORTHERN SYRIA ? Syrian rebels are dismayed by the U.S. response to the stepped-up fighting around the commercial capital of Aleppo.

What is the United States saying? Are they not listening? Do they want us all to die? ? These are just a few reactions to what in the eyes of the Syrian rebels looked like a weak and confused American position on the ongoing war.

The rebels, who are battling the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, are specifically reacting to statements from State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland.? On Thursday she said Washington is ?deeply concerned? about the threat of potential massacres in Aleppo, but that the United States will not assist in the supply of arms to the opposition.

?We do not believe that pouring more fuel on this fire is going to save lives," she said, adding that there had not been the kind of ?groundswell call for external support" seen elsewhere.

When rebels I?m traveling with heard that, they were shocked.? One young man with a Russian AK-47 by his side could hardly believe it.?

Yesterday, I met one of his neighbors, Umm Ahmed.? She says she?s 105 years old, the oldest woman in her village.? She?s nearly deaf.? Her eyes are cloudy with cataracts.? She has shrapnel in her leg from a Syrian artillery shell that exploded by her home.? Her son, 74 years old, lost a leg. Her other son was killed by Syrian forces; her friend, a woman of 85, had her house burned by government troops.?

The young rebel who was so surprised by U.S. statement says he wants weapons to defend his neighbors and free his country from an army that he says is attacking the Syrian people.? His unit is armed mostly with homemade bombs and a few rifles.?

He doesn?t understand how giving him the ability to defend himself and 105-year-old Umm Ahmed, who still walks everyday even with an injured leg, is ?pouring fuel on the fire.?? The fire in Syria is already burning.

As for the groundswell, every rebel I?ve spoken to for the last month ? each one I?ve quoted in articles or seen quoted in articles written by other reporters ??has asked for outside help.? The rebels don?t want American troops on the ground, they want to fight to free the country themselves, but they do want U.S. assistance in obtaining arms.

Russia is openly supplying the Assad government with weapons.? Iran has military trainers on the ground, according to numerous witness and Western intelligence reports.? The rebels are fighting with bombs that look like firecrackers.? It?s hardly a fair fight.?

From here in the war zone, the State Department?s fears about a massacre in Aleppo seem like crocodile sympathy.? A rebel here explained it to me like this.? ?If a person is drowning, and you have a life preserver in your hand and don?t throw it, but only talk and say you?re sorry he?s drowning, then you are responsible too.?

Star-studded audience for Olympic opening ceremony

LONDON (AP) ? There will be monarchs, presidents, prime ministers ? and David Beckham. Friday's opening ceremony for the London Olympics is an A-list affair.

Among the 60,000 spectators at Olympic Stadium will be Queen Elizabeth II ? who as British head of state will officially open the games ? along with royals including Prince William and his wife Kate, and Prince Harry.

There's sure to be a sprinkling of showbiz royalty, too, with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, recently filming in Britain, the most often-cited names.

The British government says more than 80 heads of state and government will be in the audience, including royalty from Brunei, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden.

The U.S. will be represented by first lady Michelle Obama and Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney will also attend.

Beckham, who helped bring the games to London and is widely rumored to have a role in the ceremony, will be there, and British newspapers have speculated that boxing great Muhammad Ali may also be involved.

The show, a 27 million pound ($42 million) spectacular titled "Isles of Wonder," will end with a performance by Paul McCartney.
