UK man wins fight to make "Stormtrooper" helmets (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? A British prop designer who makes replicas of the menacing Stormtrooper helmets featured in Star Wars films won a legal battle Wednesday against director George Lucas, who took him to the High Court in 2008 over copyright infringement.

The Supreme Court ruled that the replicas were not covered by copyright law because they were not works of art, the Press Association reported.

But the court also ruled that the director's copyright had been violated in the United States.

Judges said 62-year-old Andrew Ainsworth is free to continue making the helmets in his studio in Twickenham, southwest of London, although he cannot export them to the U.S.

"I am proud to report that in the English legal system David can prevail against Goliath if his cause is right," Ainsworth said in a statement. "If there is a force, then it has been with me these past five years."

Ainsworth, who made most of the helmets in the original Star Wars film uses original moulds and tools to make replicas for fans.

"We don't export to the US, so it doesn't affect us. We export everywhere else: Australia, Singapore -- we're looking at that side of the world," he said.

Both the UK Court of Appeal and the High Court had already ruled in Ainsworth's favor in his battle with Lucas's production company Lucasfilm, who had successfully sued him in the U.S. for $20 million before taking their legal battle to Britain.

After Wednesday's judgment, Lucasfilm vowed to continue defending its property rights.

It said in a statement it was committed "to aggressively protecting its intellectual property rights relating to Star Wars in the UK and around the globe through any and all means available to it, including copyright, trademark, design patents and other protections afforded by law."

It added it encouraged recent efforts by the British government to modernize copyright and design laws and added that film props are protected by the law in "virtually every other country in the world."

Morgan's past resurfaces months into CNN host gig (AP)

NEW YORK ? CNN knew Piers Morgan had a colorful past as a London tabloid editor when the network installed him as Larry King's replacement this year, but surely didn't anticipate how that personal history would ensnare him months into his new job.

Morgan issued another statement Wednesday denying any involvement or knowledge of journalists at Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper illegally hacking into phone messages while he was editor there, despite the resurfacing of an old interview that brought what he knew into question.

CNN said it remains satisfied with Morgan's explanations of what happened while he was a London editor.

The Daily Mirror has come under suspicion following revelations that rival newspaper News of the World ? recently shut down by its publisher ? routinely intercepted voicemails left for public figures.

To Americans, Morgan is best known as a judge on NBC's top summer show "America's Got Talent" and, since January, as a celebrity interviewer on CNN's prime-time lineup. His show's ratings aren't robust, but his viewership is up 12 percent over the last year of "Larry King Live," and more among younger viewers.

Morgan edited the now-defunct News of the World briefly in the 1990s, the newspaper at the center of the phone hacking scandal. He spent most of his editing career at the Daily Mirror, where he was boss from 1995 to 2004.

A blogger in Britain brought forth this week an audio recording of a BBC radio interview Morgan gave in 2009, where his questioner asked how a "nice middle class boy" felt about associating with people who rake through garbage cans, tap people's phones and take secret photographs.

Morgan replied that the activity had to be put in perspective.

"Not a lot of that went on," he said. "A lot of it was done by third parties rather than the staffs themselves. That's not to defend it, because obviously you were running the results of their work.

"I'm quite happy to be parked in the corner of tabloid beast and to have to sit here defending all these things I used to get up to, and I make no pretense about the stuff we used to do. I simply say the net of people doing it was very wide, and certainly encompassed the high and low end of the supposed newspaper market."

The remarks were interpreted by some as an admission that Morgan's Daily Mirror engaged in the same practices that got the News of the World shut down. Morgan vigorously disputes that.

"Millions of people heard these comments when I first made them ... and none deduced that I was admitting to, or condoning illegal reporting activity," he said. "(The interviewer) asked me a fairly lengthy question about how I felt dealing with people operating at the sharp end of investigative journalism. My answer was not specific to any of the numerous examples she gave, but a general observation about tabloid newspaper reporters and private investigators. As I have said before, I have never hacked a phone, told anyone to hack a phone nor to my knowledge published any story obtained from the hacking of a phone."

Morgan also took to Twitter to attack those who were spreading stories about him.

"I don't mind being wrongly smeared with all this Hackgate stuff," he wrote. "I'd just rather it wasn't done by liars, druggie ex-bankrupts and conmen."

CNN has invested a lot of time and money into the launch of Morgan's show and isn't likely to give that up on the basis of what's been heard so far, said Kim Bondy, a former CNN producer who now teaches journalism at the University of New Orleans.

"They'll stand by him as long as they believe he's being truthful with them," Bondy said. "I don't see them embarrassing him in any way."

Tammy Haddad, a former producer for King who now runs her own media consulting business, said Morgan's viewers won't have much interest in what is going on in England and will judge him on his television show.

"If the investigation moves in a big way to U.S. soil, then Piers will need to talk with his audience and tell them directly his experiences and that he wasn't involved," she said.

Red Faction series suppressed ? ? Playstation @Game Console ...

THQ puts destruction-focused sci-fi franchise back onto the shelf after latest entry posts disappointing first-month sales.

?

Three years ago, THQ confirmed that it was bringing back the Red Faction franchise after it had sat dormant for the better half of a decade. It appears the franchise is going back on the shelf, judging from the publisher?s investor conference call today.

After citing disappointing sales for Red Faction: Armageddon as a factor in the publisher?s $38.4 million quarterly loss, THQ CEO Brian Farrell told investors the publisher had no more plans for the franchise.

?Given that the title now in two successive versions has just found a niche, we do not intend to carry forward with that franchise in any meaningful way,? Farrell said.

Since the franchise returned in 2009, it has seen two retail releases and a downloadable tie-in. The well-received Red Faction: Guerrilla on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 made the series relevant again, enough that THQ prepped a follow-up in Armageddon. That release was supported by a SyFy tie-in movie and the downloadable dual-stick shooter Red Faction: Battlegrounds.

Double Dee success | Restaurant Reviews | Halifax, Nova Scotia ...

We embark for our meal at Dee Dee's in less than favourable weather conditions. On a day where the light sprinkle of rain is not a welcome relief to the heat--- rather an addition to fog and a chilly breeze ---I'm not all that keen on ice cream.

But when we arrive at the little purple storefront on Cornwallis Street, my shivering body and heart are warmed by the smiles from the two gals behind the counter. Dee Dee's is as cute as can be: A once-small ice cream stand in Peggys Cove, it expanded first to the Farmers' Market and now to this storefront location. The menu has grown, too, with the addition of burritos ---an odd combo, but one Dee Dee's does incredibly well. The shop is tiny but uplifting, with just two tables; we're lucky enough to come during a lull and manage to score a seat. It's counter service.

I order a salad plate ($6.50) with the addition of guacamole ($1.10), while my friend chooses The Works burrito with chicken ($10.85). Cheese and sour cream are an additional charge at 90 cents and 60 cents, respectively, but banana peppers and jalapeno sauce are complementary. As we wait for our order, I ask for water and get a glass. I'm impressed that I'm not being charged an arm and a leg for a bottle. My friend chooses a Lemon Squeeze to drink ($2.50). As we look on, a server squeezes the juice from one lemon and adds a dash of simple syrup, ice and water. It's deliciously refreshing.

The salad plate is an excellent idea as it lays all of the burrito ingredients bare so as to taste each flavour. And flavour it has in spades. The platter of organic refried black beans, salsa, rice, lettuce and corn chips is filling, but leaves room for dessert. I'm in heaven. The guacamole is smooth and creamy with a distinctively lime-y top note. The salsa is so fresh it's as though the tomato, onion, green pepper and jalapeno were pureed in a food processor just moments before.

My friend's burrito is fantastic. The Works features, well, the works---a 12-inch flour tortilla with organic refried black beans, rice, free range Nova Scotia chicken, lettuce, salsa, sour cream, cheese and guacamole. With one bite, my friend groans and says, "You gotta try this." The flavours are classic Mexican and meld together so as to include a taste of everything in each bite. It leaves him with a goofy smile on his face.

Knowing that ice cream is in store, I save room for dessert. The patient staff encourage us to sample the varieties until we find our favourites. Since we are already on a lemon kick, we each end up preferring two lemon-based options. My friend opts for the regular size (two scoops/$3.90) and our server offers to make it two different flavours. He decides on a scoop of blueberry-lemon, topping it off with one of mixed berry.

When I ask the server her favourite, her face lights up as she sighs "the Shaker Lemon." With a reaction such as that, I have to give it a try. I order the smallest size option, one scoop for $3 (the kiddie size). The rich, slightly sweet cream is accented by a ripple of tangy lemon and studded with pieces of lemon curd. You can tell it's homemade---and it's sensational.

Though eating out is primarily about the food, the culmination of the other ingredients---service, atmosphere and people---are what make for a truly fantastic recipe. As we leave, blissfully licking our ice cream cones, I'm sad to go and even tempted to pop my head back in to see if they're hiring.

The environment at Dee Dee's is what makes it so special, and that makes their ice cream all the more sweet.

Drink - Philadelphia Weekly

Seeing red: "The wine should massage the spirit of the dinner."

At first glance, writing an interesting, cost-effective wine list in Philadelphia seems like it would be a perfect catch-22?or, more cynically, a no-win situation. There are the ever-present PLCB headaches to contend with. Then there?s the issue of pricing. In a BYOB culture like Philly?s, guests are reluctant to order markup bottles they can buy more cheaply at Canal?s or Moore Brothers, so you have to find wines that aren?t readily available at the retail level. Finally, the issue of selection hovers over it all: How far can you really push your guests to think and drink outside their comfort zone??

Turns out that these obstacles are just that: Speed bumps to be overcome. And for the past several years, restaurants all over the city have been building exciting, occasionally challenging wine lists that make it affordable for guests to do a bit of grape-based exploration without breaking the bank.?

So how are they doing it? And what really constitutes a good wine program these days??

?A good wine list really depends on a couple of things,? says Jason Evenchik, co-owner, with his wife Delphine, of Vintage (129 S. 13th St.), Time (1315 Sansom St.) and Bar (1309 Sansom St.). ?One, the vibe or style of the restaurant. [Two,] the food that you?re serving, and the price point of the food. And [finally,] the demographic you?re going after.??

According to Evenchik, a great wine list is just as much a product of its context as it is its contents. In other words, what?s perfect for a barbecue joint is very different from what will work at an Asian spot.?

The same remains true even when dealing with the area?s classic temples of fine dining. Le Bec-Fin, for example, offers a wide selection of classics and a deep catalog of back-vintage bottlings not only because that?s what?s expected of a restaurant of its ilk, but also because it goes with the food so well. A bottle of Chateau Latour 1982, while perfect with classic French haute cuisine, will fall relatively flat next to even the most perfectly prepared pad thai.?

Beyond the context of the food, restaurants also have to consider the role wine will play in the overall experience they?re aiming to provide. Aimee Olexy, for example, has become highly regarded not just for the preparation of carefully curated, highly seasonal dishes at her restaurants Talula?s Table and Talula?s Garden (210 W. Washington Sq.), but also for the uniquely personal experience provided them. [Disclosure: I consulted on the wine program for Talula?s Garden.]?

?I like to have something in-depth to talk about with people tableside,? Olexy says. ?And when you?re dining, the experience you have is about your food, your wine, the setting, what?s going on in the world, your company, that sort of thing. And the greater value you place on all of those things, the greater the experience is.??

Placing value on those things isn?t only about finding great wine, however. For Olexy, as for Evenchik, it?s imperative that the wine program mesh well with the overall space and concept. So when she approached me to consult on the wine program at Talula?s Garden, it only made sense that we limit the wines we?d consider to those that were made in an environmentally friendly manner, were not mass-produced, and demonstrated some sort of artisanal commitment in their craftsmanship.?

The risks of composing a list of wines like these is that guests may not be familiar with all, or even most, of them. But the benefits far outweigh any downside.?

?I believe, as restaurateurs, that we should give clients much more credit than many restaurants do,? Olexy says. ?People have no problem reading menus, understanding food preparations, learning about new or obscure grape varieties or regions ... and sometimes, restaurateurs assume that they don?t, but these are things that often actually turn into conversation pieces, and become almost like their own process of discovery.??

That sense of discovery, in fact, is one of the great benefits to the city?s ever-expanding crop of reasonably priced and idiosyncratic wine lists: As everyone I spoke with pointed out, it?s generally easier for a guest to order a wine they?re not familiar with if the price is a bit more moderate. Conversely, guests tend to get a touch more timid when ordering more expensive bottles.?

At Vintage, ?People don?t generally want to try [an unfamiliar bottle] for $80,? Evenchik explains. ?They?d rather have a Napa cab or something else they?re familiar with.? He adds that generally, when ?you get the people who know a little bit about wine and have some cash, they want to see [well-known labels like] Chateau Montelena or Cakebread, Stags Leap?they want to go with what they?ve heard of.??

Fortunately, there?s a bit of a shift happening right now, and as the Philadelphia drinking public becomes more open to exploring the world of wine, they?re also willing to take a chance on a bottle or a glass they?ve never heard of before just on the recommendation of the staff. To that end, Olexy points out that getting the staff behind the wine program, and educating them in its particulars, is a long-term project that not only pays dividends for the guests, but also for the careers of the servers and bartenders themselves: The education itself is a priceless long-term benefit.?

Then, of course, there are those wonderful surprises that most guests may not expect when unfurling the wine bibles at restaurants like Vetri, Le Bec, Lacroix and The Fountain. These totemic dining destinations are increasingly home to some seriously interesting, often quirky offerings. Most of them, in fact, typically have been, as long as you knew where to look and were open to suggestions.?

Sommeliers, beverage directors, consultants and restaurateurs are crafting lists that reflect who they are and what they value, as opposed to simply trying to assemble a list of the same old usual suspects. And this is happening at every strata of dining, from neighborhood bistros to high-end restaurants.?

John Toler, sales manager for Dreadnought Wines, one of the most interesting portfolios around, sings the praises of lists like these. ?As I get older, I?ve stopped apologizing for my own personal tastes,? he says. ?And I don?t like to see a wine list that tries to cover all its bases. I would rather see a wine list that reflects the person that?s behind it.??

He continues, ?If you?re passionate about a particular grape, a particular style, or a particular region, that?s great. I?d like to see that come through on the wine list. I might disagree with you, but at least it makes it an interesting wine list.??

The ever-evolving wine culture here reflects a trend that?s occurring all over the United States, much to the benefit of everyone. Olexy puts it best, and though she was speaking specifically of the list at Talula?s Garden, it could just as handily apply to other restaurants in the city that look at their wine programs through a similar lens: ?The price points for the wines we?ve chosen say that these things aren?t [monetary] investments,? she said. ?They?re an investment in a couple hours of pleasure and a beautiful memory.? And, she says, the selections should evolve, just as the menu does.?

by socks on July 25, 2011

You can realistically make money with pay-per-click advertising. PPC?s are used to generate millions of greenbacks, and you may use them too. Have you found out about pay-per-click marketing? If you have come to a decision to earn money online, then you have most likely heard about them and the folks that make large money with PPC advertising alone.

Pay per clicks work well for affiliate marketing. Associates all over the world can use ppc?s to earn monthly incomes anywhere from $10,000 to $100,000. Many internet entrepreneurs depend significantly on their PPC marketing campaigns to bring in the most highly targeted traffic at the fastest speeds practicable. Some marketers use this as their first source of traffic and leads simply because it is so particularly impressive.

What makes this advertising technique so incredibly effective? Two things essentially. The first is that ppc?s offer warranted possible customers for the money. See, unlike lots of other paid advertising strategies that do not offer guaranteed results, ppc?s do. You only pay when your ads are clicked on. Thus you have 0 waste when it comes to your promotion budget.

The other reason that they work so well is the fact that they?re the most targeted advertising method available. The search sites match your adverts with searchers that are searching for the exact kind of product or service that you are offering. You have absolute control. You get to pick the keywords that your ad shows up under, and therefore , by choosing the best keywords you can identify your target market.

If you truly want to make big money with pay per click advertising, which is of course a wonderful thing to do, i recommend getting yourself a proven system for maximizing results. Of the assorted pay-per-click selling systems available, I strongly recommend Adwords Miracle.

Google Adwords s the number 1 pay-per-click supplier, and the Adwords Miracle is a confirmed system for maximizing the earning potential of pay-per-click promoting thru Google.

Norway gunman deems killings "atrocious,"necessary" (Reuters)

SUNDVOLLEN, Norway (Reuters) ? A Norwegian right-wing fanatic who killed at least 92 people believes his acts were atrocious but necessary, his lawyer said, as the nation mourned victims of its worst attacks since World War Two.

Police were investigating on Sunday whether a possible second gunman took part in the shooting massacre and bomb attack on Friday that traumatized a normally peaceful Nordic country.

But they also defended the speed of their response to the second stage of the attack when the gunman was able to shoot unchallenged for a prolonged period on an island outside Oslo, shortly after the huge bomb went off in the capital.

In his first comment via a lawyer since he was arrested, 32-year-old Anders Behring Breivik expressed willingness to explain himself in court at a hearing likely to be held on Monday about extending his custody.

"He has said that he believed the actions were atrocious, but that in his head they were necessary," lawyer Geir Lippestad told independent TV2 news, adding that his client admitted to both the shootings and the bombing.

Police said Breivik gave himself up to armed officers when they arrived on the small island of Utoeya in a lake about 42 km (26 miles) northwest of Oslo where at least 85 people were gunned down. Most were teenagers and young adults attending a summer camp of the youth wing of Norway's ruling Labor Party.

About 650 people were on the island when the gunman, wearing a police uniform according to witnesses, opened fire. Police said it took them one hour to stop the massacre from when they first received information about the shootings, the worst by a single gunman in modern times.

RESPONSE TIME

"The response time from when we got the message was quick. There were problems with transport out to the island," police chief Sveinung Sponheim said, defending the delay.

Witnesses said the gunman picked off his victims at will, forcing youngsters to scatter in panic or to jump into the lake to swim for the mainland.

Breivik was also arrested for the bombing in Oslo's government district that killed seven people hours earlier. Norway's toughest sentence is 21 years in jail. Police believe Breivik drove to Utoeya after the explosion in the capital.

Survivors, relatives of those killed and supporters planned a procession to mourn the dead at Sundvollen on Sunday, near the island where the massacre took place.

King Harald is due to attend a service in Oslo cathedral, a few hundred meters (yards) from where a bomb devastated government buildings including the offices of Labor Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.

Police said they were seeking several missing people and the toll could rise to 98, in the worst case.

Lippestad, speaking late on Saturday, did not give more details of possible motives by Breivik.

Breivik hated "cultural marxists," wanted a "crusade" against the spread of Islam and liked guns and weightlifting, web postings, acquaintances and officials said.

A video posted on the YouTube website showed several pictures of Breivik, including one of him in a scuba diving outfit pointing an automatic weapon.

"Before we can start our crusade we must do our duty by decimating cultural marxism," said a caption under the video called "Knights Templar 2083" on the YouTube website, which took down the video on Saturday.

A Norwegian website provided a link to a 1,500 page electronic manifesto which says Breivik was the author. It was not possible to verify who posted the video or wrote the book.

"Once you decide to strike, it is better to kill too many than not enough, or you risk reducing the desired ideological impact of the strike," the book said.

IMMIGRATION

Norway has traditionally been open to immigration, which has been criticized by the populist Progress Party, of which Breivik was a former member. The Labor Party, whose youth camp Breivik attacked, has long backed multi-culturalism to accommodate Norway's different ethnic communities.

About 100 people stood solemnly early on Sunday at a makeshift vigil near Oslo's main church, laying flowers and lighting candles. Soldiers with guns and wearing bullet-proof vests blocked streets leading to the government district.

"We are all in sorrow, everybody is scared," said Imran Shah, a Norwegian taxi driver of Pakistani heritage, as a light summer drizzle fell on unusually empty Oslo streets.

"At first, people thought Muslims were behind this," he said, referring to some initial suspicions that the attacks might have been by Al Qaeda, perhaps in protest at NATO-member Norway's role in Afghanistan or Iraq.

Some terrified survivors of the shooting rampage said bullets came from at least two sides.

"We are not at all certain" about whether he acted alone, police chief Sponheim said. "That is one of the things that the investigation will concentrate on."

"I heard screams. I heard people begging for their lives and I heard shots. He just blew them away," Labor Party youth member Erik Kursetgjerde, 18, told Reuters.

"I was certain I was going to die," he said. "People ran everywhere. They panicked and climbed into trees. People got trampled."

Breivik, tall and blond, owned a farming company called Breivik Geofarm, which a supply firm said he had used to buy fertilizer -- possibly to make the Oslo bomb.

Home-grown anti-government militants have struck elsewhere in the past, notably in the United States, where Timothy McVeigh killed 168 people with a truck bomb in Oklahoma City in 1995.

The district attacked is the heart of power in Norway. But security is not tight in a country unused to such violence and better known for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize and mediating in conflicts, including the Middle East and Sri Lanka.

HP Pavilion dv6-6170us

Looking at our top-rated desktop replacement laptops can leave you feeling a bit of sticker shock, with prices climbing upwards of $1,500. With an Intel Core i7-2630QM CPU and AMD Radeon HD 6770M graphics card, the HP Pavilion dv6-6170us ($1,049.99 list at Amazon) provides all the performance of these premium laptops for several hundred dollars less. However, you will have to sacrifice a few features to get those savings.

Design
The dv6-6170us looks sharp, with a bare brushed aluminum chassis that we've seen on recent Pavilion models. Where other models have used bold colors to differentiate themselves from the iconic look of the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) ($2,199 direct, 4 stars), the dv6-6170us embraces a bare, unvarnished look. Instead of smooth surfaces, the Pavilion dv6-6170us has a rough brush pattern similar to wood grain. The unpainted aluminum is tinted steel grey, and covers the lid and palm rest.

The aluminum construction is sturdy, with none of the chassis flexing seen with designs that rely on plastic. Measuring 1.4 by 14.9 by 9.7 inches (HWD) and weighing 5.66 pounds, it's not the lightest 15-inch laptop on the market, outweighing both the Dell XPS 15z ($1,534 direct, 4 stars) and Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (5.5 pounds ) and are both less than 1-inch thick. The lid is slightly contoured, with a lip running along the hinge that provides a secure grip when carrying the closed laptop. The palm rest is also contoured, curving down to provide a more comfortable typing experience.

The dv6-6170us features a chiclet-style keyboard, with square, matte-finish keys. An adjacent numeric pad is a boon to number crunchers, but you don't get the backlight seen on the Dell XPS 15z. The multitouch trackpad is smooth and responsive, and HP has ditched the glitchy clickpad found on last year's models. The two separate right and left mouse buttons click easily, but weren't as soft as those found on the XPS 15z.

The dv6-6170us is equipped with Beats Audio, a sound enhancement package that HP boasts will bring you "studio quality sound." The combination of hardware and software did indeed provide great sound when shuffling through music on Pandora. It produced brighter tones and better bass, though the bass was a bit anemic compared with laptops with a subwoofer.

The 15.6-inch widescreen display only sports a 1,366 by 768 resolution. In comparison, premium desktop replacements like the Dell XPS 15z offer 1,920 by 1,080 resolution, but this corner is one of the few HP has cut in order to make this well appointed laptop more affordable. The dv6-6170us's display will let you watch movies in 720p, but you won't be able to enjoy the 1080p picture available. That's unfortunate, given the system's Blu-ray drive. For that, you'll need to connect to an HDTV with either an HDMI cord or WiDi 2.0, Intel's wireless streaming alternative to HDMI, which can stream to any television, as long as it's equipped with a Netgear Push2TV receiver, a $99 option.

Features
The dv6-6170us is stacked with an assortment of features including, two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, a multi-format card reader (SD, MMC, MS/Pro), a VGA connection for an external monitor or projector, Ethernet and 802.11n Wi-Fi. To secure the laptop you can use either a physical Kensington Lock or keep unwanted people out of your system with biometric security using the integrated fingerprint scanner. The dv6-6170us doesn't have WiMAX, a mobile broadband solution offered on pricier desktop replacements, like the Dell XPS 15z and the Sony VAIO VPC-F226FM/B ($1,389.99 list, 4 stars).

The 750GB 5,400rpm hard drive offers lots of space for programs and media, but premium systems like the Dell XPS 15z offer the same capacity with faster speeds. On the hard drive, you'll find several programs preinstalled on the new system, like a 60-day trial of Norton Internet Security and an abbreviated starter version of Microsoft Office 2010 that provides only word-processing and spreadsheet functionality while serving up ads for Microsoft products. You also find a few unwanted extras, like a Bing toolbar, a collection of game samples from WildTangent, Blio ebook reader, and Evernote. HP covers the dv6-6170us with a one-year warranty that also includes 1-year of toll-free hardware support, and registered owners also get one year of free software support.

Performance
HP Pavilion dv6-6170us HP didn't pull any punches when it outfitted the dv6-6170us, opting for some of the fiercest components available. It's equipped with a 2GHz Intel Core i7-2630QM quad-core processor, one of the top CPUs from Intel's "Sandy Bridge" line-up. Paired with 6GB of RAM, it makes the dv6-6170us a strong and versatile laptop, capable of handling any task you send its way. In PCMark 7, our general performance test, it scored 2,313 points, outscoring the top performing Sony VAIO VPC-226FM/B (2,236 points). It also rocketed through CineBench R11.5, our processor speed test, scoring 4.98 points, only a fraction of a point behind the category-leading Asus N53SV-A1 ($1,279 street, 4 stars) (5 points) and Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) (5.07 points).

All that horsepower also makes the dv6-6170us a powerful tool for multimedia work. It completed our Handbrake video encoding test in 1 minute 36 seconds, and ran through our Photoshop CS5 test in 3;52, scores that could only be beaten by the very best of the best, the Dell XPS 15z (Photoshop 3:40) and the Sony VAIO VPC-226FM/B (Handbrake 1:36). Those speeds are definitely fast enough to satisfy the most demanding home video auteur.

The high-end selection of parts doesn't stop at the graphics processor, as HP has equipped the Pavilion with an AMD Radeon HD 6770M dedicated GPU, with manual switching between it and the already powerful integrated graphics processing offered by the Intel Core i7 processor. It bested all competitors in 3DMark 06, scoring 11,899 points at medium resolution and 9,944 at native resolution. By comparison, the closest matching score came from the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) (10,878 medium, 8,671 native). The dv6-6170us didn't dominate our gaming tests, however, scoring 49.7 frames per second in Crysis and 17.5 fps in Lost Planet 2, both at medium resolution. Surprisingly, neither game test would run at native resolution settings. As these scores indicate, the dv6-6170us will play any game you want to run on it, but you may need to dial down the eye-candy.

The dv6-6170us offers some of the longest battery life in the category, lasting 6 hours 16 minutes in our MobileMark 2007 benchmark test with a 6-cell (55Wh) battery. While this is six minutes shy of the Dell XPS 15z (6:22 with a 64Wh battery), the Pavilion has the benefit of an easily accessed battery - meaning that you can pack along an extra to swap out for all day power. The Dell XPS 15z and the Apple MacBook Pro (which scored 4:40 with a 77.5Wh battery) both use non-removable batteries, sealing them inside the chassis.

The HP Pavilion dv6-6170us gives you some of the best components and performance in the desktop replacement category, rivaling the top dogs in several areas. But it trims a few extras, like WiMAX and a 1080p display. As a result, the Editors' Choice Dell XPS 15z still tops the category, but smart shoppers will definitely ask themselves whether it's worth the extra $500 dollars.
