Tom Peters and Bob Waterman praised poker in their classic book In Search of Excellence as an apt metaphor for new product development.

?Experimentation ? resembles nothing so much as a game of stud poker. With each card, the stakes get higher and with each card, you know more, but you never really know enough until the last card has been played. The most important ability in the game is knowing when to fold.?
When we share this analogy with managers, they agree that it is a good metaphor. After all, with most development projects, you never know for sure until after the fact whether it has been worthwhile. And, as the project gets rolling, each major step becomes much more expensive than the last ? making it harder to quit psychologically. Knowing how to revise the odds in light of new information is crucial as well. Help Your Baby or Toddler Stop the Pacifier- How and When | The ...
Hey, parents ? do you have a pacifier-, dummy-, binky-, or soother-addict living in your home? If so, this article is for you. We?re talking today about when to ditch the pacifier, and how to do it.
Pacifiers Are Not Evil
I think it?s important to begin our article today with this reminder: pacifiers aren?t evil. They?re not dangerous. (In fact, they may even reduce the risk of SIDS.) However, it is important to avoid introducing them until the breastfeeding relationship is established, if you are breastfeeding (or planning to).
They get a bad rap sometimes, but really, pacifiers can be a helpful tool in the effort to help our babies sleep well. Pacifiers can be a tool to help babies self-soothe without parental aid, and can decrease nighttime waking (that is, unless your baby?s constantly calling for you to come and replace the pacifier after it?s fallen out!)
So let?s remember that like many things associated with baby and toddler sleep, pacifiers aren?t a problem until they?re a problem. If the pacifier fits neatly into your baby?s or toddler?s life (and neatly into yours) then don?t feel pressured to get rid of it.
But what if it doesn?t? What if your baby is waking you 10 times each night to replace the pacifier after it?s fallen out of her mouth? What if you?re sick and tired of toting pacifiers everywhere you go, just so your toddler won?t have to be without one? If that?s the case, it might be time to ditch the pacifier for good.
The Ideal Age to Ditch the Pacifier
Speaking of getting rid of the pacifier ? when should it happen? That?s a big question for parents whose little ones are hooked on the binky.
Unfortunately, there?s no magic age. Some parents wean their babies off the pacifier as early as 5 or 6 months; others let their toddlers hang onto their pacifiers until age 3 or 4. Truly, there?s no right or wrong, black or white when it comes to pacifier usage. It?s kind of like baby sleep in that way ? babies and toddlers learn to sleep in different ways, and at different ages.
But let?s look at a general truth when it comes to weaning babies and toddlers off the pacifier: the earlier you do it, the easier it?s going to be. The same is true for sleep training, and for potty training, and for so many things associated with raising children.
For this reason, pediatricians usually recommend weaning your little one from the pacifier before age one. The idea is that before 12 months, your child hasn?t had the time (or the cognitive ability) to form a deep attachment to a pacifier, so taking it away may not be as difficult.
Not the case if you try to wean a toddler off his pacifier, however. Starting around 18 months, a toddler has likely formed strong feelings of attachment to his pacifier. Try to take it away then, and it?ll probably be much harder than if you?d done it earlier. Not impossible, of course, but filled with more tears and anger on the part of your toddler (and maybe on your part, too!) Beyond a few years old and you add the risk of causing dental problems, too.
Nicole?s Note:
?The best time to wean your baby from the pacifier (or start sleep training or potty training) would be after a child is developmentally ready, but before they have become strong-willed and emotionally attached to the status quo. Just like we recommend sleep training after 4 to 6 months old, we would not really potty train a 15 month old (though elimination communication is becoming a more popular parenting concept). Once a baby has formed an attachment to their pacifier or soother, it becomes more like a lovey and who would wean a 2 year old away from her favorite teddy bear or blanket? But, if your baby is waking up frequently at night and can?t put it in himself, that is more of a problem than a solution.Neither of my boys had a pacifier (one not by choice and one I made a conscious effort to avoid it). We probably paid for it in the early days, but it was much easier later.?
How To Ditch the Pacifier
Just like there?s no ?right age? to ditch the pacifier; there?s no ?right way? to do it, either. There are a few things to keep in mind, though, as you create your plan for pacifier weaning:
- If you?re weaning a baby who?s under 12 months, you probably don?t need to be creative. You can probably get by with simply throwing the pacifiers out and then preparing for a few rough, sleepless nights and some short, restless naps.
- If you?re weaning a toddler, you might want to be creative. You can just get rid of the pacifiers when your toddler?s not looking, of course, and end things cold-turkey. But you could also be creative, and get your toddler to help with the weaning process. I knew a mom who told her 3 year old son that they needed to send his pacifiers to children who didn?t have any ? he helped her pack them into a box and everything! It turned out to be a great solution for that family.
Nicole?s Note:
?Just like most of our Sleep Plans, we often break things up into smaller steps. I have some families stop the pacifier at night, but not during the day. Or, they use the pacifier for sleep and not throughout the day. Sometimes it doesn?t have to be all or nothing, depending on the child. Sometimes we just start slow and then build up to getting rid of it completely. Just like sleep training, what works for you may not be what worked for your friend or neighbor. Some do best with ripping off the band-aid and some do better with slow and methodical.?
Tips for Ditching the Pacifier
Whatever strategies you use to wean your baby or toddler off the pacifier, keep the following tips in mind:
- Plan ahead. Weaning a baby off the pacifier is a fairly small event, but weaning a toddler is big. Very, very big, for some toddlers. So plan ahead, and make sure the pacifier weaning doesn?t coincide with another big event, like a move, or the birth of a new sibling, or potty-training. It?s best to tackle big events one at a time, to help minimize your child?s stress.
- Be patient. There?s bound to be some fussing and sleeplessness when you finally banish the pacifiers. That?s just how it goes. So prepare yourself to be patient, and to ride out the storm.
- Be firm. If pacifier weaning just isn?t working, you may feel like stopping and trying again later. And that may work ? we?re not saying it won?t! But that might not be the best approach, especially if you?re weaning a toddler. Why? Because parents, your toddlers are smart. And if they get even the slightest inkling that their actions (crying, screaming, tantrum-throwing, etc.) can make you change course, guess what?s going to happen? The crying, screaming, and tantrum-throwing will only get worse. Better to be firm and consistent now ? not only will the pacifier weaning happen faster, but you?ll teach your toddler the valuable lesson that mom and dad mean what they say.
- Keep perspective. For some parents, pacifier weaning belongs in the ?Things That Feel Like They Might Literally Kill Me? category. It?s that painful and brutal. But take heart, parents! It?ll pass. We promise. And just think ? once you?ve cleared this hurdle, there?ll only be 15 or 16 more years worth of hurdles ahead!

Luke Rockhold off Strikeforce event with wrist injury
Strikeforce: Champions just took another hit. The Jan. 12 event, which is rumored to be Strikeforce's last, lost Luke Rockhold to injury. The middleweight champion has a wrist injury and had to withdraw from his bout with Lorenz Larkin.
Larkin was apparently not happy about Rockhold's decision to withdraw, because he sent several tweets ripping Rockhold.
The two were supposed to meet at the Nov. 3 Strikeforce event. Rockhold withdrew from that bout with a wrist injury, and the event was scrapped.
The Rockhold injury is another blow to Strikeforce. They canceled event in September and November, leading to rumors about their demise. Having a event called "Champions" without many champions doesn't inspire much confident about their future.

Clearing the Fog Around Personality Disorders
For years they have lived as orphans and outliers, a colony of misfit characters on their own island: the bizarre one and the needy one, the untrusting and the crooked, the grandiose and the cowardly.
Their customs and rituals are as captivating as any tribe?s, and at least as mystifying. Every mental anthropologist who has visited their world seems to walk away with a different story, a new model to explain those strange behaviors.
This weekend the Board of Trustees of the American Psychiatric Association will vote on whether to adopt a new diagnostic system for some of the most serious, and striking, syndromes in medicine: personality disorders.
Personality disorders occupy a troublesome niche in psychiatry. The 10 recognized syndromes are fairly well represented on the self-help shelves of bookstores and include such well-known types as narcissistic personality disorder, avoidant personality disorder, as well as dependent and histrionic personalities.
But when full-blown, the disorders are difficult to characterize and treat, and doctors seldom do careful evaluations, missing or downplaying behavior patterns that underlie problems like depression and anxiety in millions of people.
The new proposal ? part of the psychiatric association?s effort of many years to update its influential diagnostic manual ? is intended to clarify these diagnoses and better integrate them into clinical practice, to extend and improve treatment. But the effort has run into so much opposition that it will probably be relegated to the back of the manual, if it?s allowed in at all.
Dr. David J. Kupfer, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh and chairman of the task force updating the manual, would not speculate on which way the vote might go: ?All I can say is that personality disorders were one of the first things we tackled, but that doesn?t make it the easiest.?
The entire exercise has forced psychiatrists to confront one of the field?s most elementary, yet still unresolved, questions: What, exactly, is a personality problem?
Habits of Thought
It wasn?t supposed to be this difficult.
Personality problems aren?t exactly new or hidden. They play out in Greek mythology, from Narcissus to the sadistic Ares. They percolate through biblical stories of madmen, compulsives and charismatics. They are writ large across the 20th century, with its rogues? gallery of vainglorious, murderous dictators.
Yet it turns out that producing precise, lasting definitions of extreme behavior patterns is exhausting work. It took more than a decade of observing patients before the German psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin could draw a clear line between psychotic disorders, like schizophrenia, and mood problems, like depression or bipolar disorder.
Likewise, Freud spent years formulating his theories on the origins of neurotic syndromes. And Freudian analysts were largely the ones who, in the early decades of the last century, described people with the sort of ?confounded identities? that are now considered personality disorders.
Their problems were not periodic symptoms, like moodiness or panic attacks, but issues rooted in longstanding habits of thought and feeling ? in who they were.
?These therapists saw people coming into treatment who looked well put-together on the surface but on the couch became very disorganized, very impaired,? said Mark F. Lenzenweger, a professor of psychology at the State University of New York at Binghamton. ?They had problems that were neither psychotic nor neurotic. They represented something else altogether.?
Several prototypes soon began to emerge. ?A pedantic sense of order is typical of the compulsive character,? wrote the Freudian analyst Wilhelm Reich in his 1933 book, ?Character Analysis,? a groundbreaking text. ?In both big and small things, he lives his life according to a preconceived, irrevocable pattern.?
Others coalesced too, most recognizable as extreme forms of everyday types: the narcissist, with his fragile, grandiose self-approval; the dependent, with her smothering clinginess; the histrionic, always in the thick of some drama, desperate to be the center of attention.
In the late 1970s, Ted Millon, scientific director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Personology and Psychopathology, pulled together the bulk of the work on personality disorders, most of it descriptive, and turned it into a set of 10 standardized types for the American Psychiatric Association?s third diagnostic manual. Published in 1980, it is a best seller among mental health workers worldwide.
These diagnostic criteria held up well for years and led to improved treatments for some people, like those with borderline personality disorder. Borderline is characterized by an extreme neediness and urges to harm oneself, often including thoughts of suicide. Many who seek help for depression also turn out to have borderline patterns, making their mood problems resistant to the usual therapies, like antidepressant drugs.
Today there are several approaches that can relieve borderline symptoms and one that, in numerous studies, has reduced hospitalizations and helped aid recovery: dialectical behavior therapy.
This progress notwithstanding, many in the field began to argue that the diagnostic catalog needed a rewrite. For one thing, some of the categories overlapped, and troubled people often got two or more personality diagnoses. ?Personality Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified,? a catchall label meaning little more than ?this person has problems? became the most common of the diagnoses.
It?s a murky area, and in recent years many therapists didn?t have the time or training to evaluate personality on top of everything else. The assessment interviews can last hours, and treatments for most of the disorders involve longer-term, specialized talk therapy.
Psychiatry was failing the sort of patients that no other field could possibly help, many experts said.
?The diagnoses simply weren?t being used very much, and there was a real need to make the whole system much more accessible,? Dr. Lenzenweger said.
Resisting Simplification?
It was easier said than done.
The most central, memorable, and knowable element of any person ? personality ? still defies any consensus.
A team of experts appointed by the psychiatric association has worked for more than five years to find some unifying system of diagnosis for personality problems.
The panel proposed a system based in part on a failure to ?develop a coherent sense of self or identity.? Not good enough, some psychiatric theorists said.
Later, the experts tied elements of the disorders to distortions in basic traits.

Apple has asked a federal court to add six more products to its patent infringement lawsuit against Samsung,?including the Samsung Galaxy Note II, in the latest in move in an ongoing legal war between the two companies.
The case is one of two patent infringement lawsuits pending in the U.S. District Court in San Jose by Apple against Samsung. An earlier lawsuit by Apple that related to different patents resulted in a $1.05 billion jury verdict against Samsung on Aug. 24.
Apple is also seeking to add the Samsung Galaxy S III, running the new Android "Jelly Bean" operating system, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 Wi-Fi, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, the Samsung Rugby Pro, and the Samsung Galaxy S III Mini, to its lawsuit, according to a court filing on Friday.
"Apple has acted quickly and diligently to determine that these newly-released products do infringe many of the same claims already asserted by Apple," the company said in the filing.
Samsung representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Apple filed the second lawsuit in February, alleging that various Samsung smartphone and tablet products including the Galaxy Nexus infringed eight of its patents.
Samsung denied infringement and filed a cross-complaint alleging that Apple's iPhone and iPad infringed eight of its patents.
A U.S. judge on Nov. 15 allowed Samsung to pursue claims the iPhone?5 also infringes its patents.
The case is Apple Inc. v. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. et al, No. 12-cv-00630.

GENEVA (AP) ? Grammy-winning jazz bassist Marcus Miller and several members of his band were injured when their bus overturned Sunday on a busy highway in Switzerland, killing the driver, police said.
The German-registered private bus tipped over as it drove into a bend on the A2 highway in central Switzerland and came to a rest on its side, police in the canton (state) of Uri said. The bus was carrying 13 people ? two drivers and 11 members of the Marcus Miller Band, including Miller.
Over his career, the bassist has worked with jazz greats such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Wayne Shorter, according to his website. He won two Grammys, his first coming in 1991 for Best Rhythm & Blues Song ("Power of Love") along with Luther Vandross and Teddy Vann, and the second came in 2001 for Best Contemporary Jazz Album ("M2").
The band was on its way from Monte Carlo to the Dutch town of Hengelo, the next stop on the American band's tour, where it was due to perform Monday.
The driver who was at the wheel at the time of the accident sustained fatal injuries. Police spokesman Karl Egli said the 12 passengers were injured and taken to hospitals, but none had life-threatening injuries.
Miller was discharged from the hospital later Sunday, as were fellow band members Alex Han and Kris Bowers, but some other band and crew members were being kept in hospitals overnight, according to a post on Miller's official Facebook page.
The cause of the accident was not immediately clear. Police believe no other vehicles were involved.

On Friday 23 November, Commissioner Maria Damanaki delivered a keynote speech at the high-level conference ?European aquaculture: the path for growth?, organised in La Coruna, Spain, by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment of Spain and the Government of Galicia together with the European Commission.
The aim of the conference is to have an exchange of views on topics to include in the future Strategic Guidelines for the promotion of European aquaculture. These Guidelines have been announced in the framework of the reform of the EU?s Common Fisheries Policy and have the objective to identify common priorities and support EU Member States in developing multiannual aquaculture plans.
The European aquaculture sector has promising growth potential and the reformed Common Fisheries Policy can give the necessary impetus to the sustainable growth of European aquaculture. Christmas tree shipment dumped in Austrian garden
VIENNA (AP) ? An early seasonal delivery went badly wrong in Austria when a truck was involved in a crash and dumped 14 tons of Christmas trees in a resident's garden.
Police in Vorarlberg state, at Austria's western tip, say the accident happened Friday night as a truck with a trailer loaded with trees drove through the town of Hohenems.
The trailer hit a wall, tipped over and landed in the garden of a house. A police statement Saturday said that the fire service dispatched 30 people to recover the hundreds of fir trees.
A passenger in the truck was injured and taken to a local hospital.

How will lower mission ages change Mormon marriage? | The Salt ...

Zeke Richards and Sarah Sturt, like many high-school couples, aren?t sure where their relationship will lead.
But the chance it will last improved with the recent decision by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to lower the ages that young Mormons may leave for missions.

Before the historic announcement, it was possible Richards, 17, would have returned from his mission just as his girlfriend, now 18, left for hers. Under this courting calculus, the two Cottonwood High seniors might not have seen each other for more than three years.
Now, with women able to leave at 19 and men at 18, the two likely will serve missions around the same time. Before the change, women couldn?t go until 21 and men 19.
"We can date when we get back again," Sturt said.
Added Richards: "She?s a really sweet girl. I was thinking there?s a good chance she?ll get married while I?m on my mission. Now, I don?t have to worry as much about that."
During the next few years, countless young Mormons will feel the romantic ripple effects of the new mission ages ? though no one yet knows exactly how. Now that men and women can go on missions around the same ages, perhaps more young couples, such as Richards and Sturt, will stay together. Or knowing their missions are just around the corner, teens may avoid serious relationships.
Maybe Mormons, returning from their missions at younger ages, will marry younger as well. Or, being younger, perhaps they?ll feel less pressure to wed soon after their missions.
"We just have to kind of wait," said Jim Brown, associate director at the Salt Lake University Institute of Religion, "and see how it plays out."
At this point, it?s anyone?s guess. But this much is certain: The LDS dating dynamic ? and marriage math ? will change.

A dry spell? ? Brown hopes the change increases the number of marriages.
"They?ll both be in the mission field and come home at about the same time," said Brown, speaking as an individual, not on behalf of the LDS Church. "Hopefully, it will lend itself to increased dating and more marriages."
That could be good news for Mormon leaders who have been emphasizing the importance of getting married. At General Conference in April 2011, apostle Richard G. Scott urged young men "of appropriate age" not to "waste time in idle pursuits." He urged young men to "get on with life and focus on getting married."
Scott was echoing church President Thomas S. Monson, who the day before had scolded young Mormon men for needlessly delaying marriage.
"Brethren, there is a point at which it?s time to think seriously about marriage," he counseled the all-male priesthood, "and to seek a companion with whom you want to spend eternity."
Marriage is a core LDS teaching; temple marriages, which Mormons believe can last forever, are necessary to reach the highest level of Mormon heaven.

Stain PVC Pipes to Match Your Project
PVC is a great material for DIY-enthusiasts, right up there with duct tape, Sugru, zip ties, and paracord. Mix the dye recipe with the Clear Cleaner, mix thoroughly, and apply using the applicator that comes in the Clear Cleaner container?you'll probably want to wear gloves for this. Do this quickly and give the work pieces several hours to dry completely.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A measure of the U.S. economy intended to signal future activity rose only slightly last month, suggesting growth could stay weak.
The Conference Board said Wednesday that its index of leading indicators increased 0.2 percent in October after a 0.5 percent gain in September. The index is intended to anticipate economic conditions three to six months out.
The strength in October came from lower interest rates, a drop in applications for unemployment benefits, and an increase in demand for large manufactured goods.
Applications for unemployment aid have spiked this month because Superstorm Sandy closed businesses and cut off power to 8 million homes in 10 states. People can claim unemployment benefits if their workplaces are forced to close and they aren't paid.
In all, only four of the 10 indicators that make up the index improved. The major areas of weakness were a decline in building permits, a drop in consumer confidence, a decline in the Institute for Supply Management's new orders index and lower stock prices.
"Based on current trends, the economy will continue to expand modestly through the early months of 2013," Ken Goldstein, an economist at the Conference Board, said.
Many analysts predict growth at an annual rate of roughly 3 percent in the July-September quarter, up from the initial estimate of 2 percent reported last month. The government releases its second estimate for third-quarter growth on Nov. 29.
But many economists expect growth to slow in the current October-December quarter to an annual rate below 2 percent. Part of the slowdown is likely to occur because of Superstorm Sandy, which disrupted businesses and cut off power throughout the Northeast.
Many companies may also hold off on hiring and new investment until the White House and Congress resolve the "fiscal cliff," the package of tax cuts and spending increases scheduled to take effect Jan. 1.
If the cliff is avoided, many analysts think growth could accelerate next year.
