This position is located in the Navy Museums Northwest, Museum and Collections Division, Naval History and Heritage Command. As a Student Trainee (Museum Curator), you will ultimately be responsible for planning, developing, and implementing the curatorial programs of the Puget Sound Navy Museum.

As a Student Trainee (Museum Curator), your duties will include, but are not limited to:

?

? Assisting the senior curator with the overall management and direction of the museum collections including the acquisition and display of objects associated with significant events, important developments, and notable achievements of the Navy.

? Conducting research which encompasses the history of the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Northwest from 1841 to the present.

? Developing themes, scripts, labels and related scholarly material to support the creation and presentation of temporary and permanent exhibits.

? Identifying, acquiring, and documenting current U.S. Navy equipment and operations which have potential historical significance.

? Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of accessioning and registration procedures, artifact nomenclature, and computer databases to employ artifact information.

To qualify for this position you must meet one of the following:

To qualify for the for the GS-05: Your resume must demonstrate successful completion of a Bachelor's degree or equivalent graduate degree in museum work or in an applicable subject-matter field OR a combination of education and experience - courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education OR four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown above.

To qualify for the for the GS-07: In addition to the basic education requirements above, your resume must demonstrate one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-05) in the Federal service performing support tasks in the management of a museum collection. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience should demonstrate the following:

? Experience accessioning, labeling, recording and storing, packing or otherwise handling collection material.

? Experience performing simple housekeeping duties in maintenance of established exhibits.

? Experience performing routine filing and record keeping in libraries of pamphlets, films, slides and other material maintained for the information of the public.

OR

?

Successful completion of one year of graduate-level education in museum studies OR successful completion of a bachelor's degree in museum studies with superior academic achievement OR a combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience.

To qualify for the for the GS-09: In addition to the basic education requirements above, your resume must demonstrate one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-07) in the Federal service handling museum collection items, following established policies and procedures, to ensure the care and maintenance of historical artifacts. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience should demonstrate the following:

? Experience storing or packing collection materials.

? Experience performing housekeeping duties in the display and maintenance of established exhibits.

? Experience recording and cataloging artifacts.

OR

?

Successful completion of one year of master's or equivalent graduate degree in museum studies OR successful completion of two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree in museum studies OR a combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience.

ELIGIBILITY:

You are eligible if you are currently accepted for enrollment or enrolled in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate.

PROGRAM COMPLETION AND CONVERSION:

? Interns may be converted to a permanent position (or, in some limited circumstances, to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of the program.

? To be eligible for conversion, Interns must:

o Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program

o Complete their degree or certificate requirements

o Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted

o Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement, and

o Perform their job successfully.

? Agencies may waive up to 320 of the required 640 hours of work for Interns who demonstrate high potential as evidenced by outstanding academic achievement and exceptional job performance.

? In addition, students working in agencies through third-party intern providers may count up to 320 of the hours they work toward the 640 hour requirement.

? Time spent under previous Internship Program appointments may count towards required work experience hours.

QUALIFYING EDUCATION:

1) A high school whose curriculum has been approved by a State or local governing body, or a home-school curriculum that has been approved by such a body or a State; and

2) Any of the following educational institutions or curricula that have been accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the secretary of the U.S. Department of Education:

(i) A technical or vocational school;

(ii) A 2-year or 4-year college or university;

(iii) A graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or

(iv) A home-school curriculum
