SECOND CHANCE: MARLY AND PATRICIA | Telluride Inside? and ...

Editor?s note: It?s no secret. The Telluride region is dog heaven. Unless you are one of our furry friends who gets caught in the maw of neglect and abuse. Then heaven is on hold until Second Chance Humane Society comes to the rescue. Second Chance is the region?s nonprofit dedicated to saving animals? lives and promoting responsible pet parenting and human-animal bond. Every week, executive director Kelly Goodin will choose to profile two of the many animals from the no-kill shelter, Angel Ridge Shelter, a dog and a cat, hoping to find them loving homes. The column will be sponsored by Ted Hoff of Cottonwood Ranch & Kennel, who from time to time exercises his skills as a dog whisperer and partners with Kelly and her staff to help train a particularly challenging animal.

Adopt a Dog Month ? Marly & Patricia

October is an eventful month for Second Chance Humane Society and animal welfare in general.? On Saturday October 13th we are promoting a furniture sale at Bear Creek Lode of Telluride where they are redecorating their Great Room and donating all sales of the furniture they are replacing to Second Chance. Check out www.adoptmountainpets.org for a preview of items.

October 6th marked the first year anniversary of our purchase of Angel Ridge Ranch and to celebrate we will have our Second Annual Howloween Party and Open House on Saturday October 20th from 1-4 PM.?? Like last year we will be hosting property tours, costume contests, pumpkin carving, apple bobbing, candy scavenger hunt and more.? Come meet the adoptable pets and partake in some howling fun!

And most importantly, October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and what better time to bring home a new family member!?!

Relative to adopting a shelter dog, the Humane Society of the United States has been pushing a marketing campaign for the past three years, The Shelter Pet Project, emphasizing that the pets that you find at shelters are not the bottom-rung, repulsive, diseased, unruly, aggressive pets that some mistakenly assume but are fabulous, lovable, wonderful tempered, bright pets that make spectacular new family members.?

Marly: The Shelter Pet Project illustrates, through creative and well produced ad campaigns, that most pets land in shelters due to human circumstance rather than factors related to the pets themselves.? This point aptly reflects how I, Marly, ended up at Second Chance Humane Society after being abandoned with my buddy Hidalgo (also here at Second Chance with me).? How someone forgets their dogs at a campground is beyond my capacity to answer but it is not because I am a ?bad dog?.

To the contrary in fact, I am a super smart and awesome three year old lab mix.? I know basic commands plus I can shake and lay down on request.? I have a good even temperament and love everyone I meet including kids, dogs, cats and rats (yes I recently met a pet rat and found him quite agreeable)!? So I invite you to come visit me and the other very adoptable dogs here at Angel Ridge Ranch and celebrate Adopt A Dog Month the proper way. If you are unable to adopt a dog this month, then consider helping dogs like me to get adopted by others by volunteering, fostering, or spreading the word about adopting!? And just because it is Adopt a Dog Month does not mean there are plenty of fabulous cats at Angel Ridge waiting to be adopted ? such as Patricia who is now requesting the keyboard?

Patricia: Greetings.? Like that sappy Marly, I, too, am a victim of unfortunate human circumstance as my last family had to move and leave me behind.? I have been assured that it was not anything I did.? I am an innocent and gorgeous 5 year old short haired tabby who enjoys the outdoors as an accomplished mouser (I am so good at it I am thinking about going after skunks next?).? I also lived with kids and a dog in my previous home so I certainly do not want to be strictly outdoors as I would need my pampering and cuddling time, just in the usual degree that all feline?s expect as our birthright.? (Although the secret is, you enjoy it more than we do, we just make you think you are doing it for us?cats out of the bag?).

The Second Chance Humane Society Animal Resource Center and Thrift Shop are both located in Ridgway but service San Miguel, Ouray & Montrose Counties.? Call the SCHS Helpline at 626-2273 to report a lost pet, learn about adopting a homeless pet, or about the SCHS Spay/Neuter, Volunteer, Feral Cat, or other Programs.??View our shelter pets and services online: www.adoptmountainpets.org.?
