Qualifying lap times tend to build pre-race buzz, but there's more to speed at the racetrack than on-the-throttle power. You've got to go slow to go fast, or so the old clich? goes, and braking late is one of the crucial ways to boost lap times on the track.

?

Brembo, ubiquitous supplier of braking systems in two and four-wheeled competition, has published a "Best of the Late Brakers" for the 2012 Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, and the list reflects those with the most bravado when it comes to postponing front binder application. The Italian brake manufacturer explains the physics of braking?here?and offers turn-by-turn analysis of speed and load differentials here... and in case you didn't know, Brembo reveals that racers spend 24 percent of Laguna Seca's 2.25 mile length slowing down in eight brake zones, pulling up to -1.4 Gs of decelerative force at a time.?

?

This year's best brakers? Not surprisingly, the top stopper is pole-sitter Jorge Lorenzo on his Yamaha Factory Racing YZR-M1, followed by Casey Stoner and Dani Pedroza on their Repsol Honda RC213Vs. Ben Spies is ranked fourth on his Yamaha YZR-M1-- let's hope he's medically cleared to hit the track today-- and Cal Crutchlow rounds out fifth with his Monster Yamaha YZR-M1. Just missing the top 5 is Valentino Rossi and his Ducati Team Desmosedici GP12.
