Computers to Go-Green

How many times in a day do you hear the slogan ?Go-Green? around you? Now even hear it from computer makers.

Everywhere starting from mobile devices to data centres and now even the powerful computers are trying to cut down the excessive use of energy. Researchers from University of Washington have created a new system called EnerJ which reduces the energy consumption up to 50 percent.

Energy consumption is a big problem these days especially with the loads of mobile applications and games. The continuous audio and video, games and real time image recognition for augmented reality applications on mobile devices uses a lot of energy.

Due to the high speed and multitasking these days a number of transistors can run on a single microchip, so now the researchers are working on lowering the voltage of some of the transistors. Even by lowering the refresh rate and reducing voltage of the memory chip, energy can be saved.

Simulations of such hardware show that running EnerJ would cut energy by about 20 to 25 percent on the average. Thus both the hardware and the software could save lot of energy altogether.
