There?s always something happening in Havana
For centuries Cuba has been the gateway to the Gulf of Mexico and boasts the largest city in the Caribbean, Havana. This historic city is now a World Heritage site with a building that dates back to 1519 which overlooks the entrance to the protected and sheltered bay. Spanish fleets in times long past used Cuba to stash the treasures they bought to the New World. It was a trading and commercial centre between the Old and the New Worlds. Today Cuba offers visitors to its shores a cultural and historical experience they would never be able to witness or take part in anywhere else in the world.
The architecture alone in Havana will take your breath away, with fabulous old American cars sauntering through the streets in an unhurried fashion that is so typical of the Cubans. There are museums, theatres and concert halls, all just waiting for visitors to come and enjoy the exhibitions, the shows and the vibrant and lively music. A visit to the art galleries is a must and a ticket to see the National Ballet of Cuba is a wonderful way to spend one evening in Havana.
Discovering Cuba means to go exploring a land that just has so much to offer in the way of sights, activities and tours. Events are always taking place somewhere in Havana, whether in Parade Square where you will find the most important pottery art collection on the island. The building alone is fabulous let alone what is found inside it.
A walk down to Cathedral Square with the incredibly opulent mansions lining each side of the avenue, will make you realize the wealth and the culture that was once found here. Some of the top places to visit in Cuba are the two ruins of the fortress of El Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro which translated in the Castle of the three Kings of El Morro and the fortress of San Carlos de la Cabana house military museums. At 9pm every day cannons are still fired to tell people the time.
Visit the churches in Havana, these incredible structures are amazing both inside and out. Mass is held daily in all these churches and the atmosphere in them is both serene with the exquisite scent of incense wafting through the air.
Havana is a city where cafes, bars and restaurants are full of life and the food served is superb. The nightlife is exuberant with clubs that stay open all night long and where visitors get a true taste of how Cubans love to dance and party the night away. The famous Tropicana Night Club has an outdoor ballroom where Cuban orchestras play catchy music, it is known as paradise under the stars.
By day visit the many museums of art, sciences and history to find an amazing amount of brilliant exhibitions which include military, decorative arts, Napoleonic and so many other exhibitions of things you will never have seen before. Then take a break and have a superb lunch before setting out to discover a beach to just laze around for a few hours in the sun.
On the east coast of Havana there are over 15 kilometres of fine white sandy beaches with marvellous resorts and hotels where you can just take in the beauty that surrounds you. Charter a boat and go fishing and have a picnic on board as you sail past the wonderful coastline.
It is worth exploring the regions around Havana and to take time to visit the wonderful fishing village of Cojimar. Just six kilometres to the east of Havana, this colourful village was where Ernest Hemmingway kept his boat and it was here that he found inspiration for many of his wonderful stories.
Another top place to visit in Cuba, is to take part in a farm party, is a traditional feast held at Palmar Farm where music is played, people dance and there is always plenty to eat and drink in a typical Cuban ambience of fun and games. You really do get involved with everything that is going on including milking a cow. You can go horseback riding and when you get back enjoy one of the best Creole meals you will ever eat in your life.
As a holiday destination, Cuba really does have everything you would ever need. Sunshine, amazing beaches, museums, art galleries, architecture, and historical sites are just some of the things it has to offer you. But most of all it offers something fresh and new and totally unspoilt.
